Just wanted to say I appreciate the work you do. I'm a mom who loves horror novels and adjacent genres. You have great balanced reviews and I have come to count on them to find new audiobooks. Cheers!
Just finished reading The Luminous Dead, and I absolutely loved it. I’m a horror fanatic and have been searching for a book that would leave me terrified. This book did it. The claustrophobia, combined with all the other elements of the story made scared to go to sleep. I agree that the ending was a bit disappointing, but otherwise I have no complaints about the story. It reminds me a lot of Darla by Johan Harstad - which I read in 6th grade and it gave me nightmares.
Getting ready to start a book blog and wanted to begin with Sci Fi Horror for October 2022 since my family this year is decorating the yard as a crash site for Halloween! Every year we do a massive theme, make treat bags based on that theme and dress up for the scene! So what better way to get ready for an Alien Crash site than reading Sci-Fi Horror! Excellent Reccomanations I have some on my TBR thank you!!
I finally read The Luminous Dead! I liked it much more than I expected, but I can totally see why it doesn't work for some people. I'm fascinated by caving though, so that was great for me (even though yeah, definitely thought there would be more horror elements). I just picked up a copy of Finna at a library sale, so I'm excited to get around to that too! I think I have the first two books from Premee Mohamed as well, so time to get to those for sure. I REALLY liked Coldbrook when I read it a few years ago. I must have added The Ghost Line to my list of books to buy after one of your older videos lol. I think I need to reread Into the Drowning Deep one of these days. I think the only other sci-fi horror I currently have in my owned TBR pile is Dead Space by Kali Wallace (not sure if it's horror vs more of a thriller though).
So glad you enjoyed Luminous Dead... I did too. I feel like I lot of people are disappointed that it doesn't get super crazy or gruesome. Love to see what you think of these all books
Thank you for doing this video. I love how you broke down each book in terms of its sci-fi vs its horror content. I really appreciate the care you put into these videos.
You did a great job, as always, and you added several books to my wish list. Brava. Short fiction sf/hor - "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison; "Sandkings" by George R R Martin; "Killdozer" and "It"by Theodore Sturgeon. Longer form, Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell; Andromeda Strain, The Swarm, and most others by Michael Crichton; Day of the Triffids and others by John Wyndham; Dreamcatcher by Stephen King; Body Snatchers by Jack Finney; Ubik, Second Variety by Philip K Dick; Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.
I am half way through Dead Silence by S A Barnes and it's shaping up to be a really decent sci-fi horror. I'm very new to sci-fi but have always been a horror reader , I've added a couple of your recommendations to my tbr . Thankyou 😊
Yes! Into the Drowning Deep was a great book and I don't see a lot of people recommending it. I did the prequel after reading this and enjoyed it filling in exactly what happened so I was still scared with the main book. I'll probably be picking up Luminous Dead and Ghost Line. I'm curious about Finna too, you've mentioned it before and it's sounds like something a little out of my wheelhouse but in a fun way. Always enjoy your videos!
Just want to throw James Blish's ''Black Easter'' into the recommendation mix. A short and atypical genre blend from the 60s (don't be put off by the age^^). Have a feeling you might find Blish's approach interesting:)
I would suggest "The Passage trilogy" by Justin Cronin. I would say the balance between Scifi, Horror and even Supernatural aspects is pretty even. The ending of the first book especially is among my favorite parts in any book!
The Luminous Dead was fabulous. One of the best books I have read this year.😅Into the Drowning Deep was also very compelling. I have put Ghostline on my tbr. Thanks!
Thank you for the mermaid book recommendation. I will dive into that so fast! I loved Kali Wallace's Dead Space - it's a whodunnit set in space; not heavy on the horror at all, but it could go with this theme.
I might have to look into these. People always recommend Blindsight (which also has sci-fi vampires) but it just wasn't my taste. I also recently read Dead Silence and despite being the exact target audience for it (it shameless mashes together the Shining, Event Horizon, and the company from Alien all of which are literally my favorite things ever) it just fell flat for me in the end. I definitely want to read Coldbrook. Its been on TBR for years now so maybe its time to go for it!
Completely agree about Dead Silence. And I did love Blindsight but I definitely understand it not being for everyone. It's very different than most sci fi horror
You don't know how much I love your recommendation videos. They're very refreshing and different from what the community normally names. I love them! 😉 Cheers from Spain
****Spoiler question for the book The Girl In the Corn! Don’t read unless you want info from the ending!**** So in just finished the book and maybe I missed something (sometimes I space out when I listen to audiobooks), but what do you think was meant at the end when Jillian said she was going to be Marguerite/the evil spirit (forgot the name) and Bobby’s baby godmother and that she would “make her an offer she wouldn’t refuse”?
I love this video! You're the best for letting us know where in the spectrum the books fall! Beneath the Rising sounds so good! Fledgling is a book that also intrigues me, it has been on my radar fpr a while. time to bump it up.
I have The Ghost Line and Into the Drowning Deep, but haven't read them yet. I have put coldbrook on my TBR 😉 as far as sci-fi horror recs, I have three: Parasite by Darcy Coates, Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes, and Smithy by Amanda Desiree.
I enjoyed The Luminous Dead, and Coldbrook. I have Finna on my eReader now so I'll be reading that soon. I have Beneath the Rising on my computer, just need to transfer it over to eReader. And I have The Ghost Line on my computer too...looks like I downloaded it in Nov last year (must have been a previous recommendation from you). I'd forgotten I had it.
I’ve been on a bit of a space horror kick lately and I remember you talking about Ghost Line before but I couldn’t remember it’s name and I could not find the video where you were talking about it. So thank you for mentioning it. I bought it this time! 🤣
I've never read in this genre but it's long intrigued me. Thanks for the "collection" of titles. I vow to read at least one this month. Hope I survive.
There is a book called Dead Silence I need to finish, but it seems good so far. It's a sci fi horror book. You may have recommend it and that's where I got it from. Lol.
Hi!! Is Beneath The Rising anything like The Fold by Peter Clines? I got those vibes from what you said, and The Fold is one of my my all time faves. Love your content btw
Coldbrook, Ghost Line, and Fledgling all sound so interesting and I've definitely added them to my TBR. I've read Into the Drowning Deep before and I absolutely *loved* it.
I'm currently reading Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. It's a mash up of sci-fi, fantasy and horror. The atmosphere is quite creepy despite how snarky the characters are! It's great and very weird because it's an off-kilter version of all three genres.
These novels sound unappealing - more science fantasy or social SF than anything else. I read Lebbon's BERSERKER years ago; very pulpy horror. Good video. 👍
Is that Mira Grant book based on that terrible mockumentary movie that was on Animal Planet or something many years back called something like Mermaids are Real. And then they started demonstrating gnashing teeth and attacking people?
You probably read it it’s the troop by Nick Cutter I would classify it as sci-fi horror because it involves A genetically modified organism that becomes a contagion
Sci-fi/Horror about a person in a cave on a another planet...say no more! p.s. Ah, we definitely need a more hardcore version then. I'm still interested though. All of these stand on the best crossroads. p.p.s. Was Rolling in the Deep the name of the prequel novella to the Into the drowning deep? I forgot about this one.
Just wanted to say I appreciate the work you do. I'm a mom who loves horror novels and adjacent genres. You have great balanced reviews and I have come to count on them to find new audiobooks. Cheers!
Oh thank you so much for the kind words. And happy to find another horror loving mama!

Really enjoyed Lebbon's Coldbrook. The setting is very close to where I live and that made it even more fun.
Please recommend more creature features!
Working on a video!

Awesome recs! Beneath The Rising sounds super interesting.
I think you might like it

So glad you enjoyed it. It seems to be a controversy recommendation
Just found your channel and I had to subscribe based off of your recommendations! I love Into the Deep! Great job on your content.
So glad you also love that book
Coldbrook sounds right up my alley! Great list, Rachel!
Wonderful... I hope you enjoy it
There's a horror element to Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy, as well as many other elements like hard scifi, but it's a huge commitment.
I definitely want to read some Hamilton next year
Thank you for the mermaid book recommendation. I will dive into that so fast!
I loved Kali Wallace's Dead Space - it's a whodunnit set in space; not heavy on the horror at all, but it could go with this theme.
Thanks for the rec. I hope you enjoy Into the Drowning Deep
Gracias por estas recomendaciones, todo el mundo recomienda los mismos libros, pero tus recomendaciones son geniales
Thanks
Ghost Line sounds pretty interesting, I'll add that to my TBR. I've always wanted a book that's like the video game Dead Space or movie Pandorum
I was obsessed with the movie PANDORUM for a while!! I’m excited about ghost line as well!!
Pandorum is awesome! We need such books. Mad Max in space basically. Serenity was nice too.
I wish I could find a book like those!

Oh thank you!
I'm a little late but I would recommend "The last astronaut" by David Wellington! An awesome mix of sci-fi and horror!
Oh yes I reviewed that one when it was released
Oh awesome! I'm new to your channel so I'll have to go watch ❤️

Aw thank you Raymond!
Thanks. "Coldbrook" sounds a good one for me.
It was really good
Watching this like “And that’s on my TBR and that one and that one.”
😂

Thank you so much for this video! I added almost all of these to my TBR!! 🛸🌌👻
So happy to hear it!
Kali Wallace has some great sci-fi horror!
I still need to read her stuff!
I love Sci fi horror. My favorite one is Cosmic horror books.
I'm really trying to more into Cosmic Horror
I've never read in this genre but it's long intrigued me. Thanks for the "collection" of titles. I vow to read at least one this month. Hope I survive.

Sorta because they have similar premises, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to the same readers
@@TheShadesofOrange thank you!
Finna: Because going to IKEA wasn't intimidating enough...
Right!?!
Coldbrook, Ghost Line, and Fledgling all sound so interesting and I've definitely added them to my TBR. I've read Into the Drowning Deep before and I absolutely *loved* it.
Glad you share my love for Into the Drowning Deep
Thanks Rachel I’ve added The Luminous Dead and Finna to my already very long list of want to reads 😆
Haha sorry to add to that long list!
2 I’ve read but the rest are awesome recommendations! I’m Adding them to my wish list now if they don’t have at my library 🤓♥️ thank you 😊
Happy to add to your list

I really should give that one a try
I had a lot of fun with that book and got really dissapointed the sequel is in 2nd person because I
I haaaaaate that
🛸
Love this video and your amazing channel please stay safe and enjoy your reading love your Australia fan John xxx
Thank you John!
@@TheShadesofOrange no worries 😉
Thanks for the list. I added them all to my list. My TBR list is large, but I'll get to them eventually! Right?! 😅
Haha absolutely !
thank you this is relly helpful.
These novels sound unappealing - more science fantasy or social SF than anything else. I read Lebbon's BERSERKER years ago; very pulpy horror. Good video. 👍
I still need to read Beserker
Into The Drowning Deep is one of my favorites as well. I love the queer representation as well.
Me too!
I loved Ghost Line. Everything about it was perfection in a tiny package.
Glad you enjoyed it. I feel like no one else has read it
I’m SO going to read Coldbrook! Thank you 🙏🥳
I hope you enjoy it
The Luminous Dead sounds terrifying, in terms of the isolation and claustrophobic elements, alone. 😱 Coldbrook also sounds amazing. 🌲🧟♀️
Very claustrophobic!
I’ve been trying to get into science fiction more and I love horror. I definitely put Coldbrook and fledgling on my TBR!!
Awesome... sci fi horror is a great bridge
Rachel, vc é muito bacana. Adoro o seu canal!!! Melhor canal!
Very interesting. Thanks for the heads-up on the "queer representation" in some of these books as some readers would rather avoid it.
Is that Mira Grant book based on that terrible mockumentary movie that was on Animal Planet or something many years back called something like Mermaids are Real. And then they started demonstrating gnashing teeth and attacking people?
I think it's definitely inspired by those awful fake documentaries
You probably read it it’s the troop by Nick Cutter I would classify it as sci-fi horror because it involves A genetically modified organism that becomes a contagion
Oh yes that one could definitely count
@@TheShadesofOrange I read that one this last month for the midnight book society’s book pick of the month for March
BTW, I gave it a solid A rating
Coldbrook added to the tbr.💀
Under a Graveyard Sky by John Ringo
Sorta zombies wreck the entire world.
I would call Hyperion sci-fi/horror.
I still need to read that one... shameful I know!
@@TheShadesofOrange I think you'd love at least parts of it.

Hello 👋
Awesome
👍💀👽!
I don't care about gay pandering representation I just want good horror!
“And one of the character is non-binary”
Yeah no thanks, I’ll just stick to my own trial and error.
Don't know why queer representation is worshipped so hard but whatever
The Luminous Dead sounds really good but has terrible ratings online. I don't know what to believe.
I liked it but it's more suspenseful than action that leaves people disappointed when they want alien
@@TheShadesofOrange I think I'm going to give it a try, thanks for the recommendation.
Its a promosing debut but does not deliver in terms of horror nor in the sci fi techno domain. Its more of a relation ship drama then anything else.
