Antimicrobial agents are some of the most widely, and often injudiciously, used therapeutic drugs worldwide. It is a general term mainly concerned with antibiotics, antibacterials, antifungals, antivirals, and antiprotozoal. These agents are drugs, chemicals, or other substances which have either microbiocidal or microbiostatic activity. However, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious global public health threats in this century. In addition, before initiating antibiotic therapy, drug hypersensitivity is a crucial consideration. By following certain general principles, all practising physicians should be able to use antimicrobial agents in a responsible manner that benefits both the individual patient and the community.
