As an old guy from the 60's I will tell you that social media is the greatest change since those days. We used to have to rely on underground newspapers like the Berkeley Barb for our news. Today information is instantaneous, and it is coming from every direction. I love that. I've been able to share my viewpoint and knowledge across the internet. People still should be wary. Personally, books are my fist choice for information. The info in books is easy to check on and it actually educates you, but the internet has so much info and is so fast I can't imagine doing without it.

Gosh, here I thought it was going to be because it was interfering with someone in the U.S. making money.
It's the exact reason this same argument was said at the advent of the internet. Being able to talk to people in other countries and see how different their lives are eventually shatters their narrative of "this is the greatest country". When even a simpleton can point and say "But they have ____, we could do that here!" and they scream and distract. People of the world are opening their eyes and becoming more interconnected, and those with the money and the power hate it because things are going to change in a way that doesn't benefit them, and they're going to keep getting desperate to maintain their stories they keep telling us.

It can't actually be done so easily. It's _possible_ , but there's a difference between possible and plausible.
It is true that if Tiktok disappeared a competitor, maybe even a new one (that could be hedging their release on tiktok's demise) would grab those customers.
Actually being a successfully platform is not as easy as that
The biggest aspect of tiktok's success was likely just luck and circumstance, grabbing a new generation of users that didn't want to be on the already crowded space of long existing platforms. Crowded with so many 'old' people.
The algorithm/ AI beyond TikTok is the coveted prize. That’s why China will never agree to a forced sale.

This discussion falsely frames the narrative on why Tik Tok is banned.
