  • On April 14, 1912 at 11:40 PM the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg during her maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
    Less than three hours later in the early hours of April 15 the “unsinkable ship” and pride of the White Star Line was gone.
    Carrying over 2,200 passengers and crew, more than 1,500 lost their lives with 706 surviving.
    Within days, White Star Line dispatched Canadian vessels to search for bodies.
    The first vessels were the Halifax-based Cable Ships Mackay-Bennett and Minia, which recovered 306 and 17 victims.
    In all, 150 unclaimed victims were laid to rest in Halifax, Nova Scotia, forever linking the city to this tragic disaster.
    I hope you enjoyed a look at this bit of Titanic history that you may not have been aware of.
    If visiting Halifax check out the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for more on the Titanic.

    What a sad tragedy. We all know about the titanic, but we have never looked deep into its history nor this. This is very enlightening, Wade. Well, put together. ❤️

      Glad you enjoyed it! I have been told that many times that most had no idea about this part of the story. Halifax has a huge connection to the Titanic. Not just the grave sites but there is a museum in the city that has lots of artifacts. Probably the most in the world. I wasn't able to visit the museum on this trip though. Have a great day!

    How do 10% of those lost go unclaimed? Perhaps communication back then was the culprit (telegraph)? Nice headstones for those buried there. 👍

    • @ExploringwithWade
      @ExploringwithWade  2 года назад +1

      The unclaimed ones might be because a good amount of them were not even fully identified and still aren't. Many of the graves have no name on them but it was also just more difficult back then maybe for families to claim them and get them back over the ocean to Europe.
