South African, here.. A hearty welcome to the RSA and to our home city, Cape Town, as well as to the home of our provincial side, The DHL Stormers!.. I wish you an enjoyable stay in our country!..
Great to see you enjoying the rugby in my home town of Cape Town. I actually was at this game aswell, it was a good vibe, but when you have the chance you should go watch a Stormers game. I was at the first home game for the Stormers this season a couple weeks back. The vibe was way better with over 20 000 people there, since they playing in the URC. But always great to see someone support the game I love
@@RobertGreeley the reason why the stadium was half empty is because the Boks were away for test matches in Europe. Scotland and England. Obviously the provincial teams then don't have their normal players here. Also, a lot of people stay at home to watch the Boks play on TV, usually the stadiums are packed
If you're still in town when the URC gets back on I highly recommend catching the Stormers next game, much better vibe. Provincial rugby is doing their marketing a massive injustice. Double bonus if its a SA derby, 30,000 in attendance minimum.
Durban boy living in Ottawa here (yay Sharks!). Its sad to see the Currie cup games not well attended, when I was growing up the stadiums were always full (and I saw many Sharks games growing up). I have found that sports spectator attendance is something done very well in North America, even the lower leagues like the AHL.The stands probably showed as booked due to season tickets. Cricket is another game where you dont keep the ball, but the ball condition is part of the game and only one can be used. Enjoy the food! (I miss it). If you still live around Ottawa, I'm always looking for someone to watch the Boks with. I'll bring the biltong.
The currie cup has become more of a developmental tournament (if you remember the Vodacom Cup, it's kind of like that). So it's the up and coming players. The attendances are now at the URC (United Rugby Championship).
I was a really hyper Western province fan in the 1970s, when a WP game could fill the old Newlands stadium. The atmosphere at Newlands couldn't be beaten. And now? The games are virtually played in secret.
@@RobertGreeley Oversaturation. There is simply too much rugby. In the old days (yes, I know what that makes me sound like), the All Blacks played against the Springboks every seven years or so, and it is impossible to describe to someone from a non-rugby country how big that was. Nowadays, they play against each other every year, among many other big games. Western Province versus Northern Transvaal was like a civil war and would fill stadiums in Pretoria or Cape Town. Now, WP and the other provincial teams have been relegated to the sidelines. They now have franchises, and the Cape Town one is the Stormers. Western Province is no longer a big deal and the biggest team a local player can aspire to play in. Plus, ticket prices. Not evident to you as a Canadian, but those prices are no laughing matter to locals. Plus, television. Were you aware that there was no TV in South Africa until 1975? It makes a big difference.
Cool video man, love Western Province but the Currie Cup games don't have the same draw as they used to, the franchise team, The Stormers would have had about 30k supporters in there and the "gees" would have been much better. Hope you had a cool experience though
it's just cape town - Sharks fill the stadium or at least try to. In fact they just said they've sold out against Stormers and are opening two new stand sections.
I love that your first match in South Africa was Western Province vs the Sharks I am actually a Western Province supporter and my girlfriend supports the Sharks. I have never been to DHL Stadium I was only at the old stadium DHL Newlands
if youre still in south africa you should try the Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The environment is amazing and the food is miles better than any other staduim.
You should try wet biltong. Dry hard biltong is nice but I'm not the biggest fan with how hard it can be. Biltong is also a cured meat whereas afaik jerky is done in an oven and is dehydrated.
Next time go to a Food Lovers Market and buy some honey-glazed biltong (it is weighed out for you). That stuff is more expensive but jeez, talk about an addictive taste!
The sold out was likely points to season ticket holders as it was a currie cup game I'm assuming from earlier in the year it'll be pretty empty compared to URC games as it's a development league at this point for the teams
@@RobertGreeley WP/Stormers are pretty well supported usually, but Currie Cup games less so so that would be it. It's a bit of a shame you didn't get to see the stadium during a URC game as they're usually pretty exciting
When I booked my season tickets the first time, I also thought I was buying an aisle seat. The end of the blocks are not on the aisles 🤣🙄 Alot of those centre seats are season ticket holders who might not come to all games.
When the Currie was still popular. A game between Stormers and Sharks, those stands would have been full. Fyi, please try a proper biltong shop for some decent biltong.
Unfortunately the only currie cup game that is well attended is the final. It's sad to see the decline. I've watched every time they came to Loftus but was also very empty.
@@RobertGreeley what did you think of traffic lights being called robots in SA 😂 pass at the green robot, stop at the red. Tourists usually crack up when we say robots 😂
@@RobertGreeley Those sealed bags are not my preferred way of eating it... find a biltong shop, they will freshly slice up some for you and spice it with some delicious salt... R100 is more than enough for a person to snack on for a few days, of you can control yourself :)
All our Sports leagues (soccer, cricket and rugby) are always played in empty stadiums. It's only certain matches featuring big popular teams, were stadium attendance will be better. Other than that it's national teams (Springboks, Proteas and Bafana Bafana), were the stadium attendance is way better. The reason for poor league attendances it's largely due to the history of south Africa 🇿🇦. Were sports are racially associated and divisive. The country has a long way to go, to being united.
People and companies buy season ticket. This means you can go to multiple games. Unfortunately the people who has the tickets don't go to all the games maybe that is why it is sold out but with empty seats.
What absolute kak are you talking? The Stormers are the most supported team. If you don't like the Stormers rather just say nothing. But surely you can't feel better about yourself after talking shit like this. Or you just never watch sport. Please stop embarrassing yourself.
Apologies for the stands being so empty. We have been there often when the place was packed and the vibe awesome. Unfortunately whenever there is a lot of games close together people cannot afford to attend them all and attendance drops off.
Just be careful, speaking as a South African. Always know your environment and immediate surroundings when doing a walk-talk-video-selfie - You don't want to create an EASY snatch and grab opportunity. Always remember, South Africa is not 1st world like Canada. But you are very welcome.
