That's the craziest part to me. @ConjureNoonSlothit is diabolical that the so called remake, had an engine swap and material "overhaul" done, and the new version still managed to reach the quality of a remaster only, or even worse than a remaster. Strangely it wasn't receiving mass overall negative reviews like gta trilogy definitive editions at launch, and ea (plus the new lost pixel studio) did the same thing rockstar did, rockstar wiped Grove Street Games' name from the startup boot screen logo while still keeping it at the credits sequence, the studio who handled the remastered texture through ai, while ea and the lost pixel just didn't put the popcap original staff into the credit. This was so disrespectful that both caught attention by devs on the social platform, they all did the work, no matter the good ones in pvz original or the subpar one in gta remasters, at least they deserved their name

It’s not EA’s fault this game is garbage. EA is literally just a publishing company, PopCap is responsible for this remake, they’re the ones who made it and they failed. EA also published the Dead Space remake, which is literally one of the best remakes of all time. Publishing companies aren’t great and are consumed by greed, everyone knows this, but they aren’t the ones creating the game. At the end of the day Pop Cap made this game and they chose, to be as lazy as possible in its creation.
A game with no actual online play that requires an internet connection to play is honestly peak EA. They don't want to revive the franchise; they just want to revive the profits.

You can now only use one item at a time & have to wait for the animation to finish before being able to use something again, which makes watering your plants REALLY slow compared to the original. Also, I was trying to get the Streak 15 achievements in Vasebreaker, and I had to use a Cherry Bomb to beat a Gargantuar at the end of Streak 11. But then my game bugged and I was not able to select the Cherry Bomb despite having hundreds of Sun. I lost because of that.
Seeing Shyguymask comment on pvz related stuff really brings memories...so sad our small community is getting treated like dirt by the company, they don't have the compassion the original team had which is why they'd never be able to replicate the same feeling. I was rooting for this remake but...yeah it's disappointing.. seeing the game I grew up with treated this way.

It's the "Ship of Theseus" in action - how much of a dev company can you replace before it becomes another company? And it's not only game devs, it's everything, comics, movies, books, TV shows,heck even your local resturant... Atleast with the resturant you'll hear people say "yeah they switched the chef out, it's not the same anymore", yet Obsidian for some reason still gets credit for New Vegas while not a single soul is left from that time. The second a smaller company i.e. PopCap Games/Mojang/Bullfrog/Westwood gets bought up by a bigger company they simply cease to be, replaced by skinwalkers.

Honestly you shouldn't have been surprised. With few exceptions the teams on remakes like this from a giant publisher like EA are rarely going to have any connection to the original. It is bullshit when those people are still alive, working in the industry, and would have been happy to be involved. But it's standard operating procedure. It's garbage they aren't properly credited, but again that's not a surprise. EA pulls that sort of shit all the time.

I don't even know how to use skins. I must not have unlocked it yet. I don't tend to use skins in single player games though, I just pre ordered because I wanted to support it. I don't get a lot of the hate for it either, but maybe I'm just not enough of a super fan to care.

Fun fact: On the Steam reviews for Replanted, the reviews in Chinese are mostly negative. A lot of the ~490 ( last I checked a couple days ago ) are absolutely not happy with the quality of the game. For context as to why this matters: I don't know the exact reason why, but when PvZ got released in China, it was probably more massive of a success than anywhere else, given they got multiple more releases from Great Wall Edition to Journey to The West to Social edition, etcetera. So, in my mind, I see Chinese fans of the franchise as a sort of huge deal compared to any other country. It's kinda like, in my opinion, how shocking it would be for a substantial amount of Japanese people to start hating Sintendo and boycotting them.

The thing I hate the most about Replanted, isn't that they didn't bring back anyone from the original game to work on it, it's that they had the audacity to use AI upscaling, completely break almost the whole game, and there's still no online.
Which is even more wack because they have a full 720p version of the game because of the console ports, the only things that should be low-resolution are things that were exclusive to the mobile ports. 720p to 1080p isn't _that_ severe of an upscale. Even going up to 4k, there should be enough source pixels in the original to make an upscale look decent, but the unaltered AI upscaled images look soooo bad that I can only imagine they tried to upscale the very original game's assets instead of using the console versions' as a base.
But why they didn't want the original creators to work on Replanted? It's that aspect I don't understand, didn't they want to pay them for it or something? Did they just want a quick grab with this remaster?

Fake concept art, as a concept (wink) is possibly one of the greatest insults you could possibly pull on your audience and former artists. Concept art is usually seen as a rather "lazy" bonus feature, but everyone accepts it since like- it's straight up art, it's showing the foundations of what the final product became. Faking that is bordering on fraud and defamation, honestly. Fraud because they literally had to make fake concept art to begin with (i.e. they had such little content they needed to fake a LAZY bonus), and defamation because they could only be attributing this fake concept art to Rich Werner. That's possibly one of the worst things that COULD happen, they are literally doing a revisionism for money. Years down the line, if people are not smart about this, PEOPLE WILL think that's actual concept art.

I will argue that EA did exactly ONE thing right, in no mistaken or otherwise marred way, with Replanted: GOTY Edition is still on sale after it launched, and they didn't Sonic Origins it out of availability.
This is an odd thing EA does at times, occasionally they do something right, my favorite example is that all the online functionality for spore is still being actively maintained and they have an officially run discord server for the community with events and the team being active in the server

@arzfan29well one reason is that the engine used by the old ports has been decompiled so they are fairly common to be available as homebrew on modded systems, but you need to supply the game assets from the ports yourself. Just because you see no reason why anyone would want something doesn't mean there isn't a reason why others would want it.
Maybe cause they are. Remember when EA screwed over Respawn with COD:IW and battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2? It's EA's goal to make sure they make garbage while profiting off that said garbage because they know people will buy it. 28:13 There's actually a mod for the first game that adds the ds mini games and other console mini games. They reworked them so it would work fine. They made it so that in homerun derby you had to move the mouse, in heat wave you pressed a button to cool the plants down, and in air raid you move the repeater with the mouse. As a musician, the music in the first game is what absolutely hooked me to the franchise, but I've never gotten that feeling after the first game, so I usually only play the first game, PvZ 2 was a good sequel tho

The Mobile Version was so Bad on released of 2019 that i actually went out of my way and bought Steam version same year despite the fact that i have beaten PVZ2 and PVZ1 on Crack version when i was 12..

Did they remove the letters entirely? no? so why is he complaining about extra accessibility features? hes complaining about too many extra levels? he admits the clouds were fun but still complained about having to play with the mechanic? this is unbearable. hes complaining about being able to view the credits??? wtf am i watching? This game was supposed to save the franchise , but instead just put the final nail into it's coffin. This game made my childhood , but unfortunately there's no saving it. A lot of these nitpicks are quite strange in my opinion. The UI complaints and being able to see the final boss is fair criticism. The crazy Dave bubble thing is also pretty sloppy. HOWEVER… Some nitpicks about the actual graphics and designs are kinda silly. This is what happens when u essentially upscale an old game… what you are expecting would require a lot more money and time invested for something that likely wouldn’t sell. Heck pokemon games still don’t get the budget they should and u expected this would??
80% of the arguments for hating on this game are nitpicks. I have the game and yes it does feel a bit lazy, especially for 20 dollars there's not much new stuff. It's literally just PvZ though, it's not this horrid thing people are making it out to be. All of the glitches are fixed now anyways so a lot of these aren't even a problem anymore.

I actually know the people at The Lost Pixels... I live 20 minutes away from their studio in the island... its heartbreaking that it ended up the way it did. The Lost Pixels (alongside Other Ocean, where I actually interned a few years back, also known for being the madlads that actually dared to port Minecraft to the 3ds) are side studios (or co-dev in the industry) that help with development. EA used to be in my province of PEI (famously, Simpson's Tapped Out started development here before it got transferred to Austin, Texas). Lost Pixels and Other Ocean was made by former EA devs. I truly hope this doesn't backfire on them... Also, since I made it to the end of the video, thank you for not throwing The Lost Pixels under the bus, they were literally just contracted to make this game. Many of them were my former co-workers at Other Ocean. Many of the people I worked with on my internship have gotten laid off in the last 2 or so years.

It would depend on what part they played in these results. Whether EA/Popcap are at fault for gimping them, not giving them enough time or resources, poor direction, etc. Or if whatever part they played turned out totally fine, but the parts EA & Popcap were responsible for were the failures. If they really did their best with what they had, I wish them the best. But if they could've reasonably done better but didn't, then too bad. May justice be done, depending on what they did.
i remember seeing the PVZ room door at PAX, it was never open. there were a couple guys out front handing out little cards and pins that told me that the demo would be open later, but when I came back like 30 minutes later there weren't even any employees there or anyone waiting for the demo, just a table with some info cards, completely abandoned. it was right by the escalator that you had to take to get to the expo hall so i saw it multiple times during the day, never saw anyone there past that first encounter.
The funniest thing about this game was how much people were absolutely GLAZING this game before launch, even when it got leaked. Legit, these people were so desperate about this franchise not dying, that they would sing to high heaven about how they needed this game to do well so the franchise would be saved. It was such a massive case of denial that it was both saddening and hilarious.

Won't because most of the stuff talked about in this video is stuff that die hard fans would notice, like sound effects, not working or animation being a little bit off. But me personally, I enjoyed this game. And that's all that really matters about games is if you enjoy them or not, i didn't go in looking for flaws, and i found one or two but that's gonna happen on release of any game really

24:50 Ok the cheat code thing is so weird to me since if it's based on the console, then there wouldn't even be a need for the option in the pause menu since in console pressing both the shoulder and trigger buttons in quick succession (LB+RB and then LT+RT) would open up a menu for you to type out the cheat. They really just did not try at all with this remake and it's insane how they get even the most basic features wrong.

Strangely it wasn't receiving mass overall negative reviews like gta trilogy definitive editions at launch, and ea (plus the new lost pixel studio) did the same thing rockstar did, rockstar wiped Grove Street Games' name from the startup boot screen logo while still keeping it at the credits sequence, the studio who handled the remastered texture through ai, while ea and the lost pixel just didn't put the popcap original staff into the credit. This was so disrespectful that both caught attention by devs on the social platform, they all did the work, no matter the good ones in pvz original or the subpar one in gta remasters, at least they deserved their name

It’s not EA’s fault this game is garbage. EA is literally just a publishing company, PopCap is responsible for this remake, they’re the ones who made it and they failed. EA also published the Dead Space remake, which is literally one of the best remakes of all time. Publishing companies aren’t great and are consumed by greed, everyone knows this, but they aren’t the ones creating the game. At the end of the day Pop Cap made this game and they chose, to be as lazy as possible in its creation.

On the Steam reviews for Replanted, the reviews in Chinese are mostly negative. A lot of the ~490 ( last I checked a couple days ago ) are absolutely not happy with the quality of the game.
For context as to why this matters:
I don't know the exact reason why, but when PvZ got released in China, it was probably more massive of a success than anywhere else, given they got multiple more releases from Great Wall Edition to Journey to The West to Social edition, etcetera.
So, in my mind, I see Chinese fans of the franchise as a sort of huge deal compared to any other country. It's kinda like, in my opinion, how shocking it would be for a substantial amount of Japanese people to start hating Sintendo and boycotting them.
It is "the game" in China,People pirates operating system back then,And pvz came with bootleg windows XP,functioning as solitaire, Soon tencent which have a newground like game service released mobile version,Later on a SNS website called Renrenwang (basically twitter) ,released another version with popcap. During that period, Mortal Kombat and the consoles themselves were banned by the Chinese government,Plants vs. Zombies has largely become a parental choice, with comic books sell at school.

Which is even more wack because they have a full 720p version of the game because of the console ports, the only things that should be low-resolution are things that were exclusive to the mobile ports. 720p to 1080p isn't _that_ severe of an upscale. Even going up to 4k, there should be enough source pixels in the original to make an upscale look decent, but the unaltered AI upscaled images look soooo bad that I can only imagine they tried to upscale the very original game's assets instead of using the console versions' as a base.
But why they didn't want the original creators to work on Replanted? It's that aspect I don't understand, didn't they want to pay them for it or something? Did they just want a quick grab with this remaster?

Fake concept art, as a concept (wink) is possibly one of the greatest insults you could possibly pull on your audience and former artists. Concept art is usually seen as a rather "lazy" bonus feature, but everyone accepts it since like- it's straight up art, it's showing the foundations of what the final product became.
Faking that is bordering on fraud and defamation, honestly. Fraud because they literally had to make fake concept art to begin with (i.e. they had such little content they needed to fake a LAZY bonus), and defamation because they could only be attributing this fake concept art to Rich Werner.
That's possibly one of the worst things that COULD happen, they are literally doing a revisionism for money. Years down the line, if people are not smart about this, PEOPLE WILL think that's actual concept art.

@arzfan29well one reason is that the engine used by the old ports has been decompiled so they are fairly common to be available as homebrew on modded systems, but you need to supply the game assets from the ports yourself. Just because you see no reason why anyone would want something doesn't mean there isn't a reason why others would want it.

They made it so that in homerun derby you had to move the mouse, in heat wave you pressed a button to cool the plants down, and in air raid you move the repeater with the mouse. Im 30 minutes in and havent seen one issue with this remake that makes this video seem necessary, besides the price (And he didnt even make a big deal of that!?) hes complaining about dave being moved to the side? The art is fine. the font in zombosses letter is fine. Did they remove the letters entirely? no? so why is he complaining about extra accessibility features? hes complaining about too many extra levels? he admits the clouds were fun but still complained about having to play with the mechanic? this is unbearable. hes complaining about being able to view the credits??? wtf am i watching? A lot of these nitpicks are quite strange in my opinion. The UI complaints and being able to see the final boss is fair criticism. The crazy Dave bubble thing is also pretty sloppy. HOWEVER… Some nitpicks about the actual graphics and designs are kinda silly. This is what happens when u essentially upscale an old game… what you are expecting would require a lot more money and time invested for something that likely wouldn’t sell. Heck pokemon games still don’t get the budget they should and u expected this would??
80% of the arguments for hating on this game are nitpicks. I have the game and yes it does feel a bit lazy, especially for 20 dollars there's not much new stuff. It's literally just PvZ though, it's not this horrid thing people are making it out to be. All of the glitches are fixed now anyways so a lot of these aren't even a problem anymore.

I hate it when game companies release a “definitive eddition” of a game that is missing content from the other games
I actually know the people at The Lost Pixels... I live 20 minutes away from their studio in the island... its heartbreaking that it ended up the way it did. The Lost Pixels (alongside Other Ocean, where I actually interned a few years back, also known for being the madlads that actually dared to port Minecraft to the 3ds) are side studios (or co-dev in the industry) that help with development. EA used to be in my province of PEI (famously, Simpson's Tapped Out started development here before it got transferred to Austin, Texas). Lost Pixels and Other Ocean was made by former EA devs. I truly hope this doesn't backfire on them... Also, since I made it to the end of the video, thank you for not throwing The Lost Pixels under the bus, they were literally just contracted to make this game. Many of them were my former co-workers at Other Ocean. Many of the people I worked with on my internship have gotten laid off in the last 2 or so years.

It would depend on what part they played in these results. Whether EA/Popcap are at fault for gimping them, not giving them enough time or resources, poor direction, etc.
Or if whatever part they played turned out totally fine, but the parts EA & Popcap were responsible for were the failures.
If they really did their best with what they had, I wish them the best.
But if they could've reasonably done better but didn't, then too bad.

I have to say, minus the ads, PVZ 2 was AMAZING. Growing up I played 1 and 2 but 2 was so good
i remember seeing the PVZ room door at PAX, it was never open. there were a couple guys out front handing out little cards and pins that told me that the demo would be open later, but when I came back like 30 minutes later there weren't even any employees there or anyone waiting for the demo, just a table with some info cards, completely abandoned. it was right by the escalator that you had to take to get to the expo hall so i saw it multiple times during the day, never saw anyone there past that first encounter.
The funniest thing about this game was how much people were absolutely GLAZING this game before launch, even when it got leaked. Legit, these people were so desperate about this franchise not dying, that they would sing to high heaven about how they needed this game to do well so the franchise would be saved. It was such a massive case of denial that it was both saddening and hilarious.

24:50 Ok the cheat code thing is so weird to me since if it's based on the console, then there wouldn't even be a need for the option in the pause menu since in console pressing both the shoulder and trigger buttons in quick succession (LB+RB and then LT+RT) would open up a menu for you to type out the cheat. They really just did not try at all with this remake and it's insane how they get even the most basic features wrong.
