If you find two flat river rocks you can rub them together (in an irregular pattern) to flatten them both out perfectly smooth. You can even do it with the back sides of the stones as well, then you will have two sharpening stones with two workable sides that sit flush and don't rock.
it's a viable solution guys. no need to roast the kid. it does work. iv seen it in action. best used with some water, as the stone dust becomes a paste to speed things along.
The window edge method: Also applies to Glass top desks, if you are inside. Old favorite of mine is the coffee cup/plate method (ANY bare non-coated ceramic works.) River rocks are Awesome also. With a little patience, you can find a couple different "grit" river rocks even.
Even five years later, these tips are always appreciated. I was wondering what I'd have to buy at the store to sharpen my kitchen knives and decided to look for a DIY way online. The first video I checked out was yours and I didn't have to look at any other. I have plenty of ceramic mugs in my cupboard and I now have an instant method of sharpening my knives. Of course, I am home alone now and have no front porch steps to sharpen my kitchen knife on! LOL You were my 1st video and you will be the only one I need. This was an awesome instructional video. I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ruclips.net/user/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

I have to say thank you for this video. I have been using the edge of a vehicle window to sharpen my knives since my grandfather taught me how to do it back in the 70's. I have gotten some strange looks for doing it until the others seen how sharp my hunting knife was. Great video
You're very welcome brother. That's awesome to hear that you've been using the window edge method for sharpening your knives for all of these years now. When I sharpen my knives I always finish by strapping them on 1000 grit or higher sand paper on a sanding block. This gives an insanely sharp edge and also gives it a mirror polish which helps to keep your edge from rusting. Great tips. Will keep them in mind. I have used the river rock method tho.
for the river rock, find two flat ones and put some sand in between them and rub the flat sides together and they will surface each other and make then perfect flat. You can also use cinder blocks to make your own sharpening stones. They will surface any rock perfectly flat

I found the sharpening information very helpful. My trick is to use a plastic garbage bag for a rain kilt. I have been doing it for years. With gaiters on it keeps your legs dry. It provides more ventilation than rain pants and is easy to put on and off. Simply cut a slit along the bottom of a large black plastic garbage bag and pull it on and use the ties like a belt or tuck it under your backpack hip belt and it is done. Plus it weighs a fraction of what rain pants weigh and can be used a number of ways as a pack cover, sit pad, ground cloth, or to wrap up dry clothing in.

Great video, however I would like to mention that whenever using a strop regardless of its composition one should always roll the blade over its back, never over the cutting edge as this will prevent from cutting into the strop and prevent any possibility of rolling the cutting edge of the blade. Granddad who was a toolmaker taught me that.

Thanks a bunch Matt. Good timing by the way... have a few hiking/backpacking videos in the que that I'll be posting relatively soon. Really glad to hear that you enjoy them :) Happy Trails!
Just used the back of a condor kumunga knife (coating removed) to try and sharpen a cold steel tomahawk and it actually worked! Thought for sure that one would not work but the tomahawk can cut paper so I'm a believer and now a subscriber.
One tip is to take two rock and get them wet, and then grind them at each other. You will get a smudgy rock substance. put this on a flat surface. For an example a stick cut in half. And work it as usual.
Thanks, really helpful. I'm taking a wilderness survival class in high school and noticed those who have knives are encouraged to bring them. Especially when we go camping, which we do often. I do have a knife, but I haven't used it in 7 years, so it's really dull and rusty, I needed to restore it at home while the shops were closed and I had no idea what I could use, or if I even had anything that would suffice. Great advice, I'll be at my top knife game next class, that's for sure!
You're very welcome Barbara. I'm glad to hear that you found this video useful ☺ Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment by the way... it really means a lot to me! Best.... -John
Anything with Pumas works for polishing too. Tooth Polish, hand cleaner, anything that you can feel a bit of light grind too. In an emergency you can even use coffee grounds on a piece of wood if you have too. It's not perfect but it will work.
You're more than welcome brother. I'm very glad to hear that this may have helped you out in some way. Best of luck with your project (would definitely love to hear about it if you get the chance). Thanks for your very generous compliment on the video by the way... it means a lot. All the best.... -John
Thanks for so ingenious ideas... one suggestion... when using the sandpaper file or the river stone, it is better to move the knife backwards... and you will feel it crazy sharp my friend....
on the river rock method, I would suggest grinding two flat surfaced river rocks together to get a much smoother, flatter and more desirable surface to sharpen on. Just sayin'.
You're more than welcome Lakisha! I'm so glad to hear that you found this one helpful :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave such a great comment by the way... it's much appreciated!
most realistically useful video i've seen~~~have used the river rock method for decades, but the coffee cup and window edge tricks, not~~~for the "stuck without tool" sitch, doesn't get much better than this!!! thx, ehya
I use an emery board block these have usually 4 or 6 different grits and are oblong, these are best used for finishing after sharpening as the grits are really fine (for buffing the good lady's nails to a shine) they are also very inexpensive generally about a £ or 2 and they weigh about 5 grams tops, get a few from any chemists and pop them in your bag/tin/box or whatever it is you use for your sharpening kit.
I think I know the emery boards that you're talking about. You're definitely right, those would make for excellent finishing after sharpening. Great thinking there my friend! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment by the way... it's very much appreciated. All the best.... -John
I Lost a v sharpener and improvised one with a pair of scissors by barely opening the blades and drawing the blade of the knife through the v of the scissors, worked great
Hey there. You could certainly sharpen up a pretty dull knife using the ceramic mug method. Done it more than once myself 👍 Hope that helps. Best.... -John
You're more than welcome. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for leaving such a generous compliment on the video... it's much appreciated. Best.... -John
Its possible that the knife is too dull or your holding it at too shallow of an angle. Ceramic is harder than steel so running the knife along the ceramic will remove metal and therefore sharpen it. Also if your not keeping a consistent angle that could also be the cause.
You're very welcome Alicia! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, as well as for your very generous compliment... it means the world to me! Best.... -John

Love the tip John. I hope you do some more hikes on your other channel. Those are always entertaining and educational.
Thanks a bunch Matt. Good timing by the way... have a few hiking/backpacking videos in the que that I'll be posting relatively soon. Really glad to hear that you enjoy them :)
Happy Trails!
Just used the back of a condor kumunga knife (coating removed) to try and sharpen a cold steel tomahawk and it actually worked! Thought for sure that one would not work but the tomahawk can cut paper so I'm a believer and now a subscriber.
Great video and informative tips. Always a will then there's an option.
You got it, ratagris21. Our pal John is awesome with these tips. -Juliette
that mug tip is ingenious, it seems so obvious now that I know but I never thought about it. great video
One tip is to take two rock and get them wet, and then grind them at each other. You will get a smudgy rock substance. put this on a flat surface. For an example a stick cut in half. And work it as usual.
+Spacesqurreil95 How about just using the rocks themselfs when they are flattened against each other, does that work?
yes thats works even better. But it takes alot of work to get them flat!
Cool, now I can shave myself with my chef knife. I almost cut my bag in the process as well lol.
Your...b..bag? o.o
^Yes, a bag. ಠ_ಠ
Wait, _a_ bag? You have more than one?
Thank you for the different ways to sharpen my knife without going out and buying another sharpening stone.👍
Very well done video. Working on a project involving some survival and seeing some other alternatives helps a lot. Thanks, john.
You're more than welcome brother. I'm very glad to hear that this may have helped you out in some way. Best of luck with your project (would definitely love to hear about it if you get the chance). Thanks for your very generous compliment on the video by the way... it means a lot. All the best.... -John
thanks for the mug tip
+Raiuga Aguiar Santos You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful. :) - Chris
Thanks for so ingenious ideas... one suggestion... when using the sandpaper file or the river stone, it is better to move the knife backwards... and you will feel it crazy sharp my friend....
great video!!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only Ohioan to be watching.
Really nice and helpful video!thanks!
on the river rock method, I would suggest grinding two flat surfaced river rocks together to get a much smoother, flatter and more desirable surface to sharpen on. Just sayin'.
Awesome and helpful video. Thanks!
You're more than welcome Lakisha! I'm so glad to hear that you found this one helpful :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave such a great comment by the way... it's much appreciated!
John, really good video! Each of these suggestions are very smart. Keep up the good work, my friend.
Thank you very much Dee! Certainly means alot coming from you my friend :)
All the best!
wow the backpack straps work!!
very helpful when i need to cut and my knife is dull, so thanks! you have saved me from many breakdowns ;)
Uhhhhh budy you good?
This is awesome information and a great demonstration. You taught us so much in just 3 short minutes. Thanks so much.
You're more than welcome Dan. Thank you very much for the awesome compliment, as well as for taking the time to watch... it's much appreciated!
Tried it with a coffee mug and it worked like a charme. Good tips, thanks.
I also use stainless steel welding rods from my home made cook kit or titanium tent stakes to re-hone my edge.
most realistically useful video i've seen~~~have used the river rock method for decades, but the coffee cup and window edge tricks, not~~~for the "stuck without tool" sitch, doesn't get much better than this!!! thx, ehya
A piece of cardboard or newspaper also works for stropping.
fordhouse8b Agreed. Cardboard works well. I've never tried stropping with newspaper. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. - Chris
Would any of these work on a 2.5 foot blade and if so which one work’s best
Apparently, The po po don't appreciate your ingenuity when you sharpen your blade on their window
LOL
lmao
The mug method works like a dream! Thank you sir
can I fine it on seat belt too
+roberto felix It's best to keep those sharp edges away from any life saving pieces of equipment. - Chris
+Sierra Trading Post stropping should never cut the medium...
+Igit Igit Do you want to risk it on something that's made to save your life?
-John
I Lost a v sharpener and improvised one with a pair of scissors by barely opening the blades and drawing the blade of the knife through the v of the scissors, worked great
Are this methods for a “not so blunt” knife? Or will they work for a really dull one?
Hey there. You could certainly sharpen up a pretty dull knife using the ceramic mug method. Done it more than once myself 👍 Hope that helps. Best.... -John
1:54 I guess you can call that a whet stone by sum stsshhh
thanks a lot mate this was really helpful!
You're more than welcome. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment... it's very much appreciated!
Good because I seem to have misplaced my wet stone :(
Happy to hear the info helped you out. We hope your wet stone turns up, though! :) - Chris
i want straws to drink my drink. XD
very good simple video, thank you
You're more than welcome. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for leaving such a generous compliment on the video... it's much appreciated. Best.... -John
Just spent half hour tryin to sharpen my knife on a mug... It didn't work! 😐
Its possible that the knife is too dull or your holding it at too shallow of an angle. Ceramic is harder than steel so running the knife along the ceramic will remove metal and therefore sharpen it. Also if your not keeping a consistent angle that could also be the cause.
What great ideas! Thank you!!
You're very welcome Alicia! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, as well as for your very generous compliment... it means the world to me! Best.... -John
You can also use the underside of the teeth of your victims to sharpen a knife.
Do bear teeth work good? I have never triex2 this technique
this is just what i needed, thanks.
You're very welcome. I'm glad to hear that this helped. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment... it's much appreciated. Best.... -John
