What do high blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia) mean, and what can you do about this situation? Find out.

Today we’re going to talk about high levels of potassium in your blood, which is called hyperkalemia.
98% of all of the potassium in your body is actually inside of your cells, not outside of the cells or in your blood. When evaluating hyperkalemia, we’re really looking at just the 2%, so we’re not seeing the whole picture of what’s going on.
Considering that the majority of the potassium is inside of the cell, measuring potassium levels based on the blood may not be a good way to determine if a person has too much or too little potassium. However, there is an intracellular potassium test that I believe is much more valuable.
A few important things about hyperkalemia:
    • It’s very rare
    • There are very few symptoms associated with hyperkalemia (severe cases may cause palpitations, tiredness, muscle pain, and muscle weakness)
    • There is a condition called pseudohyperkalemia (which is basically a false impression that you have high levels of potassium in the blood)
    • Excessive intake of potassium is not a primary cause of hyperkalemia
    A few causes of hyperkalemia:
    • Advanced kidney disease
    • Addison’s disease
    • NSAIDs
    • Certain high blood pressure medications
The typical treatment for hyperkalemia typically involves taking:
    • Calcium
    • Insulin
    • Dextrose
    • Sodium bicarbonate
On the other hand, A deficiency of potassium in the blood is called hypokalemia. Hypokalemia is the most common form of electrolyte imbalance when someone is hospitalized.
    A few symptoms of hypokalemia:
    • Leg cramps
    • Weakness
    • Constipation
    • Abnormal heart rhythm issues

I have hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Blood tests during attacks and when their have been periods of no attacks potassium levels have always been fine. Out of the many Dr.s I’ve gone to, none of them could understand the rare disorder, or know what to do about it. I’ll try healing myself by eating less potassium enriched foods.

    A question:
Is keto so bad for gastritis?
I've always soffered of a "bearable" gastritis and recently, do also to the bad moment we are all experiencing, it's worsen a lot....
I gave a look at which food are good and which bad and it turned out that a ketogenic diet is really bad for gastritis.
Red beef, fatty cheese, fat in general, crucifers, coffee...in a nutshell everything I've been eating since I switched to a keto lifestyle.
Furthermore, in order to avoid an overproduction of gastric acids it's suggested to have frequent meals, the opposite of OMAD.....
I wander if the benefits of a ketogenic diet plus I.F. aren't more harmful than beneficial for me.......and for those who suffer of gastritis. Please tell me something about it or made a video.. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one interested in this subject

    Hello Dr. Berg!
Been following you for a while but missed this video.
My mother has hyperkalemia but she thinks her arrhythmias are just bad cardiovascular genetics in our family.
She is 55 and a pharmacist. Obviously, she tries to treat herself with pharma (heart medicine, powdered magnesium and vitamin pills) but to no avail and she is just getting worse over the years. She also has terrible leg cramps, especially in the evening.
A year ago she was hospitalized because of mineral deficiency in her blood (after an evening with a bottle of vine) and got a system infusion and she got better for a while. So many things correlate with this video it's crazy!
I told her to get in at least 1 juiced lemon a day, would it help her or what should an optimal health boost look like?
She's not obese but neither athletic, constantly tired so she can't do intense workouts, her physical activity is mostly walking and occasional low-intensity aerobics. She still believes you need to drink 2liters of water a day and that dietary cholesterol is bad... I'm trying to educate her on this but it's a bit like talking to a wall because she believes she and family doctors, multimedia trending dietitians are smarter in health questions. And starts to believe otherwise only if she hears something reinforcing my claims on tv or reads it in the local newspaper/magazine.

Even the most rich foods of potassium still would require you to almost eat a kilo of the stuff.
But I've seen this video, that makes sense.

@Dr. Eric Berg Thanks so much for the video. Do you have any dietary advice for someone with potassium slightly high? (5.7 mmol/L) .. other liver/potassium tests were in ref range: from lowest to highest were Creatinine, BUN followed by Chloride, Sodium and CO2 at the top of ref range... might eliminating sugar or regularly fasting dinner to lunch and cutting out snacks allow the kidneys to do a better job ridding the body of excess potassium? Or should i cut out high potassium foods? I'm vegetarian and eat many high potassium foods such as potatoes, bananas, prunes, spinach and various beans. for planning a potassium blood re-test, is there any special way i should eat or not eat before the next blood test to help check if I have a serious problem?

    • @ericwilliams8420
      @ericwilliams8420 10 месяцев назад +1

Likewise. I tested at 5.6 mmol/L My kidney & liver function were fine on the blood test. I was getting chest pains which is a symptom associated with Hyperkalemia. It's since cooled off since I've reduced the potassium in my blood. I was feeling extreme stress and anxiety that month so the chest pain could've very well been from something else.
The doctor prescribed me Sodium Polystyrene Sulfanate a week later, then had me come for more blood screening the day after taking SPS. The day after taking SPS, my levels were at 3.9 mmol/L. A week later my level is at 4.5 mmol/L. I got the levels back to normal through a combination of dieting and fasting. I also added magnesium and zinc since I (and most people) are deficient of those minerals. My Doctor told me he believes it was diet related, but I'd like to undergo a deeper battery of tests if possible. In my case I believe the culprit might've been eating/drinking too much junk (I was downing lots of orange juice, lemonade, and other sugary fruity drinks high in potassium) and partying a bit too hard on the alcohol.
It could be an Acute problem with the kidneys in all of our cases too where for whatever it wasn't dumping potassium fast enough during that period, before it got back to functioning like normal. Very well could've been false reading in our cases as well, as I hear it's VERY common depending on how the blood is drawn, how the blood is handled, or if it takes too long from the time of the blood being drawn to the time the samples are being tested. The important thing is to keep up with the dieting and making sure to test as often as needed.

@@DivaDen Its been a while so don't remember exactly. I was quite tense and walked a whole lot before taking the test and also had very high heart rate as I was kind of panicking. That's all I remember. But that was due to stress and stuff. Rest all tests related to cardiology came fine. My cousin is a Cardiologist and she said there is nothing to worry. Sometimes there is no reason as such. Some people are just born with little higher levels. She ruled out metabolic acidosis as well.

Dr Berg. Hello. I have been looking to your presentations to find out what foods can be eaten when someone has hyperkalemia . I am confused by the foods that are listed as bad (in my search), and there is a sense of 'there is no food that is good'. I see starvation ahead because all of the foods that are good to maintain a healthy body, have potassium. Please help my stressful diet. I am in Jamaica.

He said it's less from diet and instead caused by other things... It could be NSAIDs or High Blood pressure medicine. My mom has Hyperkalemia and also high blood pressure. Her doc had her stop some of the high blood pressure medicine and it reduced... Maybe watch the video again to get some other ideas -- like the sodium bicarbonate. I hope you find something to help.

Of the last six blood tests, five potassium levels were 5.0 to 5.3. My doctor blew me off. Six weeks ago I had an arrhythmia from a brain freeze while drinking a cold drink too fast. It left me with either Afib or heavy palpitations. Am now wearing a heart monitor. Have to wonder about my 5.1 potassium level which is what it has been since I had the arrhythmia which I reduced with the Valsalva maneuver. I had my magnesium tested and it was right in the middle for both serum and red blood cell.
