Reigen's morality is so fascinating because it's not 'conman=bad' or even 'charming conman gets away with everything' because he doesn't, and that's not it, it's hey, this guy IS a conman but he's also got other facets to him.

He's a bit like a fortune teller or medium who acts as a sort of therapist for those who seek closure or mental stability without the personal stigma they would inflict on themselves for visiting an official psychologist. It also makes his form of therapy more casual and effective because when people knowingly seek a therapist/psychologist they unconsciously put up barriers and facades that make finding the root of the issues more difficult.
Yeah, they make money off of it, but less than psychologists.

I think on a base level, One Punch Man has a more interesting concept, while Mob Psycho holds more weight to its potential.
I think a big aspect of how well Mob Psycho works, is that while Mob is insanely strong, he is also not invulnerable. Theres more than one point in the show where Mob is getting batted around or is put in a position where he is threatened by an opponent, despite having the same "He will always win" rule Saitama does. In stark contrast Saitama most of the time seems to just be present in his fights. He is never in a position where he could be at the very least harmed, and can never be put on the offensive because of his overwhelming abilities. You can argue that thats the point, but that doesnt mean its really that good. Overall Mob has more staying power, ironically because it adheres to the tropes a little bit more, something One Punch man was praised for avoiding.

Teruki, after seeing this video, actually serves as a big contrast to Bakugo Katsuki from MHA. They both thought they were superior to everyone around them, that is until they see that they are both very wrong. The difference between them is how they handled this idea: Teruki took his total defeat from Mob and actually learned from it, becoming better as a person and forgetting his own selfish world view. Bakugo learned that he wasn't the best, but still strives to be superior despite this, but he's far less warped in his desire to be so. He realized that he has to work hard like everyone else and not be handed it on a platter like he was as a kid.You could say Teruki learned his lesson far better, but the worlds they live in are also vastly different. One has powers everywhere while the other has a fairly select few of them.

    • @superzenmodeman
      @superzenmodeman 7 лет назад +15

To be honest, I felt the later arcs dropped in quality. They weren't bad, but I felt like they didn't live up to the level of the first arc. To be fair though, I was really bored when reading through the Mogami arc and probably enjoyed it less because of that.
The second Claw arc was enjoyable, but some of its problems resembled those of naruto with all the villain characters reforming all the time.
I'll probably not re-read the manga, but I would also love to see a second season to possibly pick up on all the insights that I hadn't noticed at first. After all, the first time through, I had felt Reigen's involvement to be shallow; Going back to it, I couldn't be more wrong.
Mob Psycho as a whole is certainly not as popular as One Punch Man, and this could partially be because in Mob Psycho, ONE is phenomenal at making scenes look shallow when they are indeed far more meaningful. As fun as OPM is, it's just doesn't have the re-watch value of Mob Psycho.

MnO is his 2nd work between OPM and Mob Psycho, and is where he practiced and refined his writing styles and visual story-telling. Later OPM chapters and Mob Psycho itself are actually a result of the growth that series brought.
it also makes up the trifecta of growth.
Mob is about growing up and becoming a man. OPM punch man is about stuggling with the realities of adulthood vs our childhood dreams and ideals. And makai no ossan, is the struggles of the older man looking to try and guide the next generation as well as the world you make for them to inherit.

I can't believe I didn't realize that Mob actually succeeded by not going berserk. After mob constantly failed to avoid going berserk, he finally succeeds at the end.
I never thought of interpreting that moment in that way; even without reazlizing this, that moment was significant for Reigen to dispel the truth and for ONE to stand against the standard anger trope in shoenen. I didn't expect it to be so relevant to Mob's development. I thought I picked up on all the insight on Mob Psycho 100 by now, but it was really fascinating to realize this.

i honestly dont like how people compare one punch and mob pyscho. mp100 is a more psychological genre like death note while one punch man is a comedy making fun of other animes like dbz and naruto.
(edit: long post warning! if you are easily offended i believe i did both series justice in my explanations! everyone is entitled to their opinions, i just wish to share mine. please continue with an open mind!)
mp100 isnt a comedy. sure, it has jokes, but its not the main focus in the slightest. each character in mp100 personifies an outlook on the actual world we live in, and each person builds off of the other people they meet. mob has problems recognizing his own self worth, believing he is nothing special. there are more mature characters like the muscle club and reigen who show him he can always be accepted and what a good person should be. while mob is slowly growing up to be a decent man, he meets other people with entirely different world views. teruki is mobs opposite, he believes his powers are everything and it makes him think he is superior to everyone else. ritsu believes the only thing worth anything is psychic powers and envies his brother to the point of hating his guts. and thats only a few of the characters in mob psycho. each of these characters develop together and learn from each other. its honestly very superb writing, and its entirely different from one punch man.
while saitama does have mental issues, they usually stay in the same place and each arc is almost identically the same. one punch man is made for veteran anime watchers and isnt a good anime to start out with because the humor is only for people who know the mainstreams and cliches.
although his character barely develops at all, its somewhat the point of the show, because he has reached the top. he has achieved what everyone in his world wanted. he cant develop any farther, and it shows us, the viewers, that once you have gotten what you always wanted, and no longer want anything else, the world is bland. once you have nothing else to achieve, you are incredibly boring. while it is a comedy, it shows us the value of goals and why we should always move forward.
each are both written in very different ways. both of them bring different audiences and each have a different take on ONE's side of his writing spectrum. honestly, the only things similar is that both the characters have overwhelming powers and both stories are written by ONE. even with the powers, both characters are INCREDIBLY different in their opinions of themselves and the other people around them.
they are both superb. but neither can be better than the other because they are both different stories and most importantly, different genres.
when it comes down to it, its what youre in the mood for. comedy, or psychological. funny, or feels. neither is better. neither is worse. they are practically equal in what they both bring to the table. main thing is, ONE loves both of these stories. he loves to write them and bring both to life. he enjoys them both. when creating mob psycho 100, ONE never thought of one punch man while making it. he created an entirely different world. he created entirely new characters. he actually wanted it to be different from one punch man. being stuck in the mindset that every story he will make from now on will be in the shadow of his first popular story, opm, is honestly very sad to me.
it was never a competition. dont make it out to be one.
(sorry for the long rant, lol. and thanks if you actually read all of this)

The part in wich you talked about relatable character psychology and showed the picture of Hanazawa is perfectly spot on. One thing that amazed me was when Mob's brother was impersonating mob and fighting in the alley and then Hanazawa did one thing that no other character in anime would ever do: Walk away and go to Mob saying 'Ey dude, there's a guy over there saying it's you and is getting his ass kicked'. That's so simple, that's something that everyone would do, but in fiction never happens. That shit was lit.

i think there's more to talk about in terms of emotional development, in addition to simply pursuing what you want without devaluing others. mob's reliance on reigen at the end together with the body-building club place emphasis on finding emotional support through community, contrasting with the arbitrary definitions of worth that many of the other characters construct solely for themselves. seeing how so much conflict in the series springs from the way characters define worth, i kind of have to wonder why the other villains exist when characters like teruki, ritsu, and sho exist. to parody all complaints about society as flawed mindsets is something of a missed opportunity, imo, since all of us have to struggle with the arbitrary definitions of worth that society sets. granted the class president symbolizes this to some degree, but in real life there are rarely specific individuals imposing those definitions of worth on everybody else, and i think that having specific individuals is more representative of elitism in subcultures rather than societal values. rather, it's we who blindly follow those definitions of worth like mob who are the source of peer pressures. maybe it's just not possible in the format of mob psycho 100, which focuses on individuals and thus needs individual villains as well.
also as a side note i think that even with one's rough art he still uses it very effectively in conveying emotion. i think it's his use of high contrast

    • @cyryl3827
      @cyryl3827 6 лет назад

It is a manga/anime. This is not just a commentary on society, and it's norms as a whole, but more of a look at what otaku/weebs/nerds etc, are.
I think especially in recent years, more and more anime/manga/novels speak about the society unjustly punishing, or shackling "healthy" otaku desires. Many potentially good series, are undermined by industry staples (?), becoming distracted from their story, values, underlying message, for the sake of fan service etc.
The last paragraph, being my own view point, not what I think Ones works are about.
      Now:
Here is what Ones works might be talking about. On one hand, you have the "simple" being a young adult, searching for your place in the world, a purpose, something that could give you a sense of accomplishment, a bit of escapism from it, and how this escapism likely wouldn't be the answer even if it was possible, because it is not work, or society that limit you, but your own ambition, and sense of self worth.
Then there is, the stuff with MP100 (and the way I personally view otaku sub-subculture, and not only it, as far as the principles go), and the way we.. push ourselves into hell, when we take a wrong step (of our own accord, or pushed by others). The longer we stay on the path, the harder it being for us, to accept how wrong we are.
tl:dr, and stuff: OPM, and MP100 are very similar, because, while they tackle different protagonists, and speak about things in slightly different ways, in the end, both are wroks of One, and both are his way of tackling same kinds of issues, and questions he has.

Honestly ONE's art, even in the beginning, is still incredible, because art is more about anatomy (which is where he was lacking). ONE knew how to use stylized elements, framing, and surreal effects to portray intense emotion. And his backgrounds are _phenomenal._ 100% sadness is done much better in the manga than in the anime for several reasons, but the art is one of the things that really stuck out to me. Seeing that two page spread of Mob in his grief, bawling while the school rebuilds piece by piece was so striking. ONE's backgrounds are incredibly detailed and impressive. He always had obvious potential and he just keeps improving.

in addition to what was said in this video, I also think it's really interesting to see what rational adulthood looks like. in terms of this, Reigen is the *perfect* character. the thing that sets him apart from all these self obsessed "children of the mind" as they were called here, is that he cares about others... and the thing that separates him from Mob, is his ability to care about others to great effect.
Reigen is presented to us as a con artist, first and foremost. but the only lie that Reigen tells is about his methods. other than that, Reigen does solve people's problems and leaves them satisfied with his work... or more recently, determines their requests to be more detrimental than good, and casts them aside in a necessary way. Reigen's actual ability that he uses to run his business is not psychic powers... it's paying attention to people. he finds out what their problems are, but that's only half the battle. using a variety of tools, he works to solve their problems as well. he goes really far in order to do this, and it's actually really admirable how much work he puts in. he's essentially made himself a jack of all trades, and it's honestly more impressive than if he was just psychic to begin with, and hell, even straight up taking advantage of these people would at least be easier. what Reigen does takes a certain level of ingenuity, and that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Reigen cares.
the show makes the audience feel about Reigen what Mob feels about Ritsu... it forces us to recognize the value of someone like Reigen, even though a lot of people are probably watching the show while waiting with bated breath to see when Mob's next 100% moment will hit. we're waiting to be impressed by Mob. we aren't expecting to be impressed by Reigen. and the real maturity of Reigen is that he still works with his own best interest in mind. he helps his customers, but he's still willing to lie to make his business seem flashier, and he won't do something that seems cruel, even if a customer wants it and is willing to pay. he treats people as equally willing to be as self serving and deceptive as he is, but this doesn't mean he isn't still trying his best. he can't fault anyone for that... all he can do is deal with it.
in this way, Reigen faces all the pieces of reality that other characters try to omit. when he shames the members of claw, what he's shaming them for is using their powers as a cop out. oppressing people sidesteps the issue of getting to know them. it avoids the necessary complication of considering another person's feelings, resolving conflicts, negotiating compromise, coming to an understanding... all things that are Reigen's bread and butter. of course these people seem fragile and ridiculous to Reigen. how could they not?
and the reason why Mob considers Reigen to be his mentor is so clear in Mob's conflict with Ritsu. because when Ritsu stood before him, newfound psychic powers at the ready, completely willing to antagonize Mob now that they have some semblance of equal footing... Mob could've fought him. in fact, that's what Ritsu thinks he wants, because he sees the acquisition of his own powers as an equalizer. Mob could've crushed Ritsu and left no room for confusion as to which of them is stronger. but it was worth it to Mob to reaffirm their bond as brothers, rather than Ritsu's fear of Mob's abilities. this isn't about who's stronger, it's about not losing the trust of someone important. caring is by no means the easy way out, but it's the only avenue that Mob truly wants to take.
caring about people is hard. sometimes you're not sure how to care most effectively, and sometimes it seems like nobody is willing to care about you. but it's worth figuring it out. because it's a power that can only do good.

Recently found your anime critique channel and gotta say, I really love your opinions as they either line up with my own or open me to a few things I didn't pick up for. I knew I liked Mob for it's more motivation driven character design and interplay between characters, but the lack of self-worth in one area driving the desire for something in another area is more prevalent during my second viewing due to this critique.
I wonder how this more positive dissertation into self worth would contrast or mash heads against the more nihilistic, cynical observations of Hunter X Hunter.

I would disagree with the idea that mob thinking his psychic powers are pretty useless is just adolescence warping his priorities.
How many times have you been in a fight in your life? How many times have you absolutely needed to move something that you weren't physically capable of moving already, either with some machinery or just your arms?
Psychic powers are cool in a shonen battle series, but manga isn't an accurate portrayal of life. People don't just go around fighting each other all of the time, and Mob's life is equally boring (at least at first)
He thinks his psychic powers are useless because, realistically, they're nothing more than a cool party trick.

Actually, ONE is on record stating that OPM's early writing is shallow because he was afraid of his own lack of experience and purposefully made them shallow and easy to focus on the comedy bits so that it wouldn't be weird if Saitama punched his way out of a corner he'd written himself into. Since at the time, he never dreamed he could write a genuine Guile character like Reigen, for instance, or something as poignant as the Separation arc.
Something which he has progressively been working to fix in later arcs. Garou was the first character where we really see get the Mob Psycho Treatment after a lot of the encouragement he'd gotten gave him the push to try and write a much more complicated character than before (starting with a rather stereotypical base and then picking away at the excuses until the characters themselves are forced to face the realities of who they are). With other characters also getting more arcs as time goes on.
some of the expansions to the manga extra content were to give more insight into characters who he felt he had done a disservice by skipping over opportunities to develop them (such as Genos getting a lot more time to shine and show his gradual growth compared to the webcomic where it mostly happens offscreen). (though I'm still not a fan of the focus on spectacle the manga does, as i feel detracts a lot from core story compared to the webcomic).

This is a neat analysis that points out some key differences with MP100 and OPM, and how it's not quite comparable!
I do feel the need to point out that people overlook ONE's ability as a great comic paneller! His linework and anatomy may be rough but the way he storyboards his stories are highly effective and the comic beats are absolutely impeccable. Also there are some expressions/emotions he draws that are just absolutely hilarious, and cannot be captured with a "polished" style.

I love mob psycho 100 because it’s the only show I’ve watched/experienced where I undubiously and unapologeticly love the main character. I’ve been waiting for a series, a book, a movie where the MAIN character has Mob’s characterization. Not an ensemble cast of main characters where one of them has that same personality traits, no, a one lone MAIN character with that characterization as a constant, as the character that the audience sympathizes with.
I MEAN COME ON, name a show that you like and you absolutely love the main character as your favorite. You may like some of their traits or character quirks but because they are virtually “seen at all times” you never get to question anything about them or wonder anything about them all that much because you are constantly observing them throughout the story. Your favorite character might and most likely be a secondary character, one we don’t know all that much about explicitly.
Contrastingly, with Mob that was what made me like him more because of his quirks and traits tying intrinsically into his morals and how they’re was no mystery behind what he did, but his surroundings and environment made it seem like there was. Like some big secret the show was going to drop about Mob and a sudden change in his character, but no. The mystery and intrigue of mob is just that. You get exactly what is said about him throughout the show, which is very refreshing to me. Or it’s because Mob is the character that isn’t usually given a leading role in this genre of media. Or it’s because of his bowl cut, either way Mob makes this show the bee’s knees in my eyes. But it’s definitely the bowl cut.
(Edit: this is much longer than I thought it was sorry.)

I'm not as sure that Mob Psycho doesn't explore the role institutions have on replicating toxic behavior in a society.
I agree that Claw and Teruki are very similar in tone and theme. Teruki is able to change in light of Mob's existence and the break in his cognitive dissonance this causes. Although the members of Claw also shift in response to a similar encounter with Reigen, the ability for them to avoid it for so much longer in their lives is the ways in which they gathered together under their ideology to mutually reinforce it over time.
Further, the arc with the student council may be largely driven by the flawed perception of Kamuro, but without the weight of that institution behind him, and the respect people have for his family, there is little chance he would be able to carry out his plan. Strong institutions are able to overcome the flaws of their those who inhabit them, so a student council is in some ways the perfect place for Kamuro, an institution with comparably low accountability and few built in checks for personal ambitions.
I absolutely agree it doesn't explore these themes as deeply as other series do, but I think it's a little much to argue it exclusively focuses on personal worldviews.

I particularly liked the fact that you brought up the athletes from the self-improvement club in such lengths.
Not only do they fit in quite nicely to illustrate your point, but because I was actually amazed that their uncommon role and portrayal has not been brought up more often.
Despite their intentionally goofy and over-the-top presentation, these guys are just very likable, and though there is some vanity the show still displays their pursuit as commendable. Even the other characters just seem to show the right amount of respect you'd expect towards such people (that are cool about it).
