Kayak Fishing at John Pennekamp State Park - Things To Do in the Florida Keys and Key Largo
It's always fun to change things up, slow the pace down and take a kayaking trip through the pristine mangrove tunnels of the Florida Keys. After several days of windy conditions, it was just what we needed to get our fishing fix and still hide from the offshore waves. We took a drive to John Pennekamp State Park where we rented two kayaks and brought one fishing rod each with a single bag of shrimp. The goal for the day was to have fun, hopefully see some nature and relax. We had little intentions of fishing but after seeing some small grunts and snappers we knew we had to get a bait out!

This was so cool it brought back memories of when I was a kid and me and my dad would go out on our kayaks and would catch little mangrove snappers and grunt and the occasional sheep head

Ahhhh kayaking. Kayaking into the wind is "fun". My sister and I used to kayak down a small local river 5-10 miles several times a year. One day the wind was so strong that the waves on the river were going UPstream. That was a "fun" day. [cough]. That quiet mangrove trail looks much simpler.

Went snorkeling on cannon beach last month and to my surprise came face to face with a school of Tarpon. Visibility was bad and seeing these fish slowly appear out of the murk and disappear slowly was a thrill. These were not small tarpon. Good times

It was a funny feeling to see the two of you outside your comfort zone & fishing out of kayaks, because I’d feel really far out of MY element in your big offshore boat!
I think you did a good job capturing the essence of what makes kayak fishing so great though, whether it’s freshwater or inshore salt : peace, quiet, close to nature & unparalleled access. It’s worth getting tangled up in branches or getting pulled around by a good fish!

Great choice on the single person kayaks. My brother is a guide up at Crystal River and their slang term for the dual person kayak is the divorce kayak. Would you recommend this 3 mile excursion for fairly fit folks in their 50s and 60s? Thanks for another wonderful video!
Most definitely! We had a great time. There wasn't too much current or wind. You can easily shorten the loop if you choose to.

Would love your thoughts on snuba, as there is a snuba company out there. Seems like it would be a great family activity. I fish from a kayak. Someday, hook a big red or snook from a kayak. It's a challenge keeping the fish and yourself out of the mangroves. 😊
