I think you misunderstand, people see her as ungrateful as when they made that promise, he was serious, he assumed she was (considering the whole multiple promise thing it does create the more serious mood as opposed to a joke), he then goes on to help her and tries endlessly to save her to only have her look to someone else, it isn't a point of people expect her to care for him but it is a point in that she never cared for him when he not only loved her but gave her everything for her to say it was a joke, she doesn't have to love him but sometimes to show you appreciate is worth at least something

you do not have to reciprocate kindness. The whole point of being kind is doing it without need of reward. So, him expecting her to love him just cos he was kind is selfish and horrible. His kindness means nothing because he expected something out of it. He was kind and helped her, but he is a dick for expecting something back. She did nothing wrong.
