I remember hearing Trevor Denman for the first time around 9 years old 1984. I remember how he made goosebumps come up almost every good race and so damn exciting. Trevor to me was and still is the greatest track announcer to call races. At his prime, he would not miss a thing in a race....whether it be a $8,000 claimer or a Breeders Cup race. It was a different time back then when this race went off. It was a glorious day to witness/hear and see. One of the greatest races ever, and Mr. Denman calling the winner right on the wire.

Long before they ever faced off in any of the triple crown races you knew Sunday Silence & Easy Goer were both a cut above and a class apart. On the exact same day, Sunday Silence blitzed the G1 Santa Anita Derby field by some 11+ lengths, and Easy Goer broke Secretariat's stakes record in the G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct by a full second and came within a fifth of a second of breaking Dr Fager's world record for the mile. Two supremely talented horses that truly brought out the best in each other.

Sunday Silence won 3 of 4. Easy Goer was a great horse - so was Sunday SIlence. Sunday Silence has Easy Goer go right by him and then comes roaring back at him and wins the battle in the stretch where it is all heart. Denman also said "Here comes Sunday Silence back, and now it's his turn to go right on by Easy Goer". In the BC Classic Sunday Silence was even more impressive - McCarron never once touches him with the stick. Sunday Silence was called the "Sleek Black Jet".

Great Classic race that was...Sunday Silence entered that Classic extremely fresh...Only raced twice since the Belmont against his "peers" and also had an extra months rest over Easy Goer...Easy Goer entered the Classic off a grueling historic campaign racing 4 times against "older" horses and racing at distances up to 1 1/2. and a month less rest...Easy Goer ran the better race and was the best horse in a neck loss...Prized beat Sunday Silence in 1 of his preps leading into the Classic...Easy Goer beat Prized by "20" lengths in his prep...Sunday Silence was a great horse but he always had advantages over Easy Goer...

The Drug-free Eclipse Award Champion & Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer will always be the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion, and the most coveted honor and prize is being inducted in the Hall of Fame, and Easy Goer did it drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs; while the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence needed and was administered performance enhancing drugs to barely beat the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer by the narrowest of margins in a few races. When ss was forced to run drug-free without any drugs (and without ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill) in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs - and as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well - ss was Crushed by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer. The 3-1 means as much or as little as Noor 4, Citation 1; Beau Purple 3, Kelso 1; Big Spruce 2, Forego 1; Cabrini Green 4, John Henry 0; Darby Creek Road 3, John Henry 0; Gallant Bloom 4, Shuvee 1; Damascus 2, Dr Fager 2; Akureyri 3, Pleasant Colony 1; Formal Gold 4, Skip Away 2; and an endless amount of others. The Classic Distance for the whole world is 1 1/2m, but EG won G1's drug-free at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f with much less time and rest between races and ran many more races; while the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence only won G1's with drugs at and only at 9f to 10f with much more time and rest between races and ran far less races.

Nonsense. Sunday Silence incurred a stone bruise that caused him to miss training and it was touch and go until two days before the race. Wittingham said earlier ion the week that if he couldn't get SS on the track for a workout by Thursday they were in trouble. So, you have a horse a bit short,
that Easy Goer dropped in on causing him to lose two to three lengths on the backstretch. Sunday Silence steadied sharply, was forced to circle horses, and he still had the will to wear Easy Goer down who was in full stride from the 5/8th's pole. If you think Easyt Goer looked like the best horse you need another pair of binoculars.
Easy Goer clearly the better horse? He had a chance to prove it in the BC classic but I suppose you'll have as many excuses for that. By the way did you know that working a mile in between races at Del Mar Sunday Silence went a mile in 1:33 2/5 tying the track record of Hall of Fame older horse, Precisionist and he did it in hand with the mildest urging?

    • @traviswest9388

joe chrow Easy Goer had drug-dependent Sunday Silence's number in races where all raceday performance enhancing drugs were banned and not allowed; and Easy Goer had Sunday Silence's number on any tracks larger than a mile; and Easy Goer was far and away the best horse on straightaways and larger turns on tracks larger than a mile; Easy Goer won Grade 1 races at 7f, 1 mile, 9f, 10f and 12f drug-free running many more races with much less time and rest between drug-free races and at more different, fluctuating distances; while SS won Grade 1 races only at 9f to 10f with raceday performance enhancing drugs running far less races with much more time and rest between races. When they sent Sunday Silence to the only state (NY) back then that banned all raceday drugs, he not only got romped by Easy Goer, but Sunday Silence barely beat Le Voyageur - a horse who never won one stake race of any kind in his entire career. Prized beat Sunday Silence in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes. When they sent performance enhancing drug-dependent Prized to the only state back then that banned all performance enhancing raceday drugs, Prized not only got romped by Easy Goer by 2 poles in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Prized got beat by numerous other ordinary horses. When they sent the performance enhancing drug-dependent Best Pal to the only state back then that banned all raceday drugs, Best Pal was soundly beaten in drug-free NY because he couldn't use any of his raceday performance enhancing drugs.
Desert Wine's connections skipped the Belmont Stakes in drug-free NY and many other big NY races because of NY's no-drugs rule, and Summer Squall did the same in 1990; Gate Dancer ran without the drugs and turned in an uncharacteristicaly bad performance without the drugs in drug-free NY; as did an endless amount of others. The Preakness winner Summer Squall was so dependent on the performance enhancing diuretic masking drug Lasix at ages 3 and 4, that they wouldn't send him to the only state back then which banned all performance enhancing drugs for the Belmont Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic (that year in NY). Ditto so many other drug-dependent horses Dance Smartly, Summer Squall, Best Pal, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's
Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great Communicator, Prized, Infinidad, Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, etc., and their connections freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs, and never [or very rarely] ran them in the prominent, illustrious races in drug free New York. These horses trainers and connections would pass up these drug free races - and if they ran in them they were often exposed for what they were by not running well - if that was not already apparent from them having skipped [and/or not run well] most of these drug free, illustrious Grade 1 races with huge purses. It was to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other huge, historic, prestigious G1 races stood as huge obstacles to drug-dependent horses. Winning any big race on drugs was/is not what racing is about; Only the drug-free races could/can be called championship events. The truth was that New York's no-drug rules kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs was a major factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions.
Easy Goer ran drug-free and had terribly puffy, problematic ankles, a clubfoot, a turned out left knee necessitating very large bags of ice/icing and huge wraps/casts, his ankles and knees needed ultrasound; and throughout Derby and Preakness week, as late as the day
before the Preakness, Easy Goer's front feet were soaked in tubs of epsom salts due to cracks on both front heels/feet; was taken out 8 or 9 wide by Valenzuela down the backstretch of the Preakness, then made a huge monster move early down the backstretch and passed ss
without cutting him off at all and completely legally passing him, then valenzuela banged and pushed him in as tight as can be on the dead rail on the turn and throughout the entire home stretch, then had his head
turned significantly to the right with his body trying to stay straight in deep stretch.

The Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer's career accomplishments and body of work were far superior to the drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant sunday silence. The litmus test of a champion is winning drug-free without any performance enhancing drugs at all, and the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer Obliterated the drug-dependent and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs (and, as importantly, also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well; Harthill was arrested an endless amount of times for illegally drugging an endless amount of horses). During that era, it was a huge credit to NY [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as humongous, gigantic obstacles to drug-dependent horses like ss; and these horses, like ss and many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. The drug-dependent and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence LOST 4 RACES on larger tracks with circumferences bigger than a mile (including ss having a LOSING RECORD while LOSING 3 races at his larger HOME track at the bigger circumferenced Hollywood Park track). Talk about a horse that needed to bring his track with him, ss is just that horse! Meanwhile, the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won Drug-free G1's at 7f, 1 mile, 1 1/8m, 1 1/4m & 1 1/2m on all 3 sized tracks (8f, 9f & 12f sized tracks) drug-free with much less rest and time between races and ran far more races with faster times at all distances and ran far superior speed figures and far superior performance ratings; while the drug-dependent and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence only won G1's with performance enhancing drugs and his illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill and only at 9f to 10f only with performance enhancing drugs and only on small 8f sized tracks and with much more rest and time between races and ran far less races even with performance enhancing drugs. Talk about a horse that needed to bring his illegal performance enhancing drugs and illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill with him - ss is just that horse, a drug-reliant horse, an illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill-reliant horse! First time I had ever heard Denman's call of this Preakness (I had forgotten he was the Pimlico track announcer for this meet because he was in as I remember a contract dispute in California at the time). This was an all-time classic.
As for Easy Goer beating Sunday Silence in the Belmont, NYRA fair or not had a VERY shady reputation at that time for "fixing the track for the Phippses." Many who were around then TO THIS DAY believe NYRA fixed the track so Easy Goer would win easily.

New York was the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs - and as importantly banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill. When a "horse carries his home track everywhere he went", he runs great on all tracks, not just his "home track" . And yes, The Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion was as brilliant in drug-free New York on many different NY tracks as he was in Florida, Maryland, etc. on different tracks. EG was an undefeated 5 for 5 on 9f sized tracks away from his "home track"; so much for that. EG actually lost two races by the narrowest of margins and while conceding a large amount of weight on his "home track". So much for that. New York by far ran/runs the most Prestigious, Championship G1 races in the USA with the highest purses in the country; NY was/is by far the best racing circuit in the USA; champions are crowned and championships are won on the Championship Tracks (they are by far the fairest tracks in the USA because they are all larger tracks with large, sweeping turns where horses run as fast around the bigger turns as they do on straightaways) in New York; NY was and still is the Center of Racing in the USA; and most importantly, there are over 200 horses in the Hall of Fame and no matter where they were based, 99% of them ran/will run in NY for the reasons listed above. Having acknowledged these facts, EG won on all 3 sized tracks - 8f, 9f and 12f sized tracks; EG won G1's drug-free at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f with much less rest and time between races and ran many more career races. The drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant SS gets Destroyed by 8 widening lengths in the only state in the whole country at the time which banned all drugs - and, as importantly, banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill; ss LOSES a GRADE 2 race to the drug-reliant Prized; when Prized is forced to run drug-free in the only state in the whole country at the time which prohibited all drugs, Prized gets crushed by 25 lengths by the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer. SS also LOST 4 races on bigger tracks with circumferences larger than a mile. SS only won G1's with drugs at 9f to 10f on small 8f sized tracks with much more rest and time between races and ran far less career races. SS was a horse who needed drugs, needed his illegal criminal vet, and needed his small one size smaller 8f track. The Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer won on numerous different tracks of all track sizes (8f, 9f and 12f sized tracks) in drug-free New York and outside drug-free NY, & won G1's drug-free at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f. Meanwhile, ss with a DISMAL record LOSING ALL races when forced to run drug-free without any drugs in the only state in the whole country during that era which banned all drugs (and as importantly also banned ss's illegal criminal vet Alex Harthill as well). ss also with a DISMAL record LOSING 4 races on bigger tracks with circumferences larger than 8f; and only winning G1's with drugs only at 9f to 10f on the small 8f sized tracks. SS was a drug-reliant and illegal criminal veterinarian Alex Harthill reliant race horse and that is all he really was; ss was also a one track (only small 8f sized tracks) race horse and that is all he really was!

PatWaitAllDay Completely true. That drug-free Easy Goer was a superior horse than the drug-dependent & cheater doper vet Alex Harthill-dependent sunday silence officially was as clear as day. I quote the DRF for the factual truths: "Sunday Silence's veterinarian Alex Harthill ADMITTED illegally breaking the laws in enhancing his horses performances. In DRF articles in recent years & in the last few years of his life, Silence's vet Alex Harthill ADMITTED to illegally using the immensely effective performance enhancing bronchodilator clenbuterol regularly in the 1980's 15 years before it was approved by the FDA on his horses, INCLUDING using it on sunday silence. SS's vet Alex Harthill introduced the incredibly effective performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol in the 1980's & illegally administered it to Sunday Silence, who benefited immeasurably by its immensely effective performance enhancing effects. The drug Clenbuterol performed miracles for horses who made inexplicable improvements with major enhancements in performance. The drug Clenbuterol has a similar effect on the body as epinephrine & amphetamines by increasing the production of epinephrine & noradrenaline & thus significantly enhancing performance; clenbuterol also thins blood & widens the vessels that carry oxygen, so the volume of oxygen in the blood increases & thus significantly increases energy & thus significantly enhances performance; plus clenbuterol dramatically reduces body fat by causing rapid fat burning. The drug Clenbuterol performed miracles for horses who made inexplicable improvements with major enhancements in performance. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration filed suit against Alex Harthill on 102 charges of possessing & using unusual quantities of controlled drugs, such as the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, EPO, Ace, powerful steroids, loop diuretics, extremely powerful painkillers & very strong amphetamines, etc."
When forced to run Without all of his ped drugs in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs, ss not only got romped by the drug-free Easy Goer, but ss barely beat le voyageur, a horse who never won even 1 stake race his entire career. The drug-dependent & cheater doper vet Alex Harthill dependent ss only could win by the slimmest of margins in a few races over the drug free Easy Goer when all of ss's performance enhancing drugs were administered to him. SS NEEDED the ped drugs. Noor 4 wins. Citation 1. Beau Purple 3 wins. Kelso 1. Formal Gold 4 wins. Skip Away 2. Gallant Bloom 4 wins. Shuvee 1. Damascus 2 wins. Dr Fager 2. Star of Cozzene 3 wins. Kotashaan 1. Billy Kelly 8 wins. Sir Barton 4. Big Spruce 2 wins. Forego 1. Darby Creek Road 3 wins. John Henry 0. Cabrini Green 4 wins. John Henry 0. Summer Squall 4 wins. Unbridled 2. Akureyri 3 wins. Pleasant Colony 1. Plus an endless amount more. Means as much or as little as all of them. All these examples show is the records of two horses in a VERY MINISCULE, TINY number of races. A few races certainly would NOT be even close to a large enough sample size if you were trying to establish consistency on a statistical basis; nor is it even close to a large enough sample size to show who was "better" (which is totally subjective anyways). The drug-free Easy Goer won G1's at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f running many more races with much less rest & time between races; beat older horses numerous times while conceding weight; Easy Goer generally ran faster times than Sunday Silence at all distances; Easy Goer more often ran faster times than Sunday Silence at all distances; EG ran far faster & immensely superior speed figures/performance ratings at all distances. The drug-dependent & cheater doper vet Alex Harthill-dependent ss needed the cheater doper vet Alex Harthill & the drug Clenbuterol to win by the slimmest of margins; only won G1's at 9f to 10f with much more rest & time between races; generally ran slower times than Easy Goer at all distances; more often ran slower times than Easy Goer at all distances.; ran far slower speed figures at all distances. The drug-free Test of the Champion Belmont Stakes proved without a doubt who was best by far because NY was the only racing state in the entire country at the time which banned all raceday performance enhancing drugs; & as importantly, NY also banned the crooked, corrupt, blatant cheater veterinarian of the drug-dependent ss, Alex Harthill. ONLY drug-free (& Harthill-free) races kept & keep the outcomes crystal clear. ONLY drug-free (& Harthill-free) races are championship races; & the litmus test of a champion is running & winning drug-free (& Harthill-free) without any raceday performance enhancing drugs or Harthill. Only the drug-free (& Harthill-free) races can be called championship races. No-drug (& No-Harthill) races are the only true tests of champions. And it proved Easy Goer was without a doubt best by far when drug-free New York prohibited the blatant cheater vet Harthill from performing his magic on SS in NY in that SS not only got romped by Easy Goer, but SS barely beat Le Voyageur (a horse who never won 1 stake race in his entire career) to boot. Raceday performance enhancing drugs (& lack thereof) are much more than enough of an advantage or disadvantage TO DECIDE EVERY (INCLUDING EG & SS) Triple Crown & Breeders' Cup race & almost all other races for that matter.
Who's better in any way and Rankings are totally subjective. But, Charles Justice's "Greatest Horses of All" book with objective rankings ranked EG far ahead of ss. Simon Rowland's retrospective Timeform rankings ranked them equals, but, after intense reviews, stated, "Ss held the slight 3-1 edge over EG by the slimmest of margins in the races they met, but he never beat him in a way that proved he was just plain better & also left no one thinking they could not have gone EG's way. In one of EG's best races, he walloped SS in the only state at the time which banned all drugs (SS needed the drugs, when ss didn't get the drugs he got crushed). Despite Ss's slight 3-1 edge in their races by the nose of his Preakness, Easy Goer's dominance, enormously superior performance ratings/speed figures, vastly superior time ratings, conceding weight while defeating older horses numerous times, & superiority while running far more outstanding performances make his body of work far superior to that of ss. EG was a far superior horse than ss whose best & near best performances were far superior to those of ss. There are alternatives to the attempt to define racehorses by a few head to head races, to give greater coverage to the array of performances. A fuller picture allows all to weigh everything. A vital way is to consider what would happen if many races were to take place, w/ each horses effort picked at random from their historical performances/performance ratings over a timescale. If you repeat this, you get a reflection of how often each horse would actually win based on the horses performances (all of them, not just the peak ones). For this, you take the horses array of performances. If you run every possible permutation of the races, sampling from each horse’s array of performances, you get in excess of 100 races. & it is Easy Goer who wins 69% of them. The reason: Many, many more of EG's wins were outstanding on Timeform performance ratings & time figures. EG, who won many more great races by sizeable margins & in faster times, also ran a much larger amount of elite performances than ss. The enduring message is to see that an array of outstanding performances gives a much fuller picture of horses & reflects things like the number of times elite levels have been reached. Other than SS's slightest edge in head to head races, Easy Goer was superior than SS in almost all other factors. That Easy Goer is a superior horse than ss officially is as clear as day."

Of course Easy Goer won outside New York, and in the process he ran the fastest 7 furlongs of the year in Florida while doing so. New York also was the
only state in the entire country that banned all drugs and medications
back then. That is like saying if the race is at his home track at Hollywood Park in California, or in drug free and medication free races, or on 9f or larger tracks, ss didn't win. Both greats, but In my opinion Easy Goer was a better horse than SS, and had a superior body of work and career than SS. But of course, once again, better in any way is still totally subjective and true in the eyes of the beholder. It
certainly is NOT the end of any story, enough said, nor proved anything
etc. Just as the head to head scoreboards are NOT enough said or end of
story (nor 'proved anything') for Citation (lost 4 of 5 to Noor), Kelso
(lost 3 of 4 to Beau Purple), Dr Fager (lost 2 of 4 to Damascus), Forego (lost 2 of 3 to Big Spruce and Wajima), John Henry, Pleasant Colony, Sir Barton, Skip
Away and many many more. That is like stating the legendary Forego
didn't win outside of NY. Easy Goer actually did, while Forego actually
did NOT. Easy Goer DID WIN outside of New York. Thats like saying SS
didn't win at his home track of Hollywood in his home state of
California, or on 9f or larger tracks - or in drug and medication free
races, or in NY. Even though SS had a losing record at his home track of
    Hollywood Park in California -
he still was able to win there even though he had that losing record.
Ditto Easy Goer outside of NY. Easy Goer DID WIN outside of NY, and in
the process ran a record seven furlongs in Florida in the Swale. He did
lose by inches and a rapidly diminishing neck outside of NY - but he
only ran a few times outside of NY and FL. Hall of Fame champion Easy
Goer won over FOUR different tracks. SS won over SIX different tracks.
He gets credit for that yes. SS had a losing record at his home track
at Hollywood Park - losing three races there. Easy Goer was mainly run
in NY and Florida in the majority of his races - seventeen of his
twenty races. The historic NY races carried and still carry a lot of
weight. Hall of Fame champion Easy Goer
was similar in this regard to other Hall of Fame champions like Forego,
Kelso, Arts and Letters, Tom Fool, Sword Dancer, etc. Just the same as
big races in CA - those races carried a lot of weight for champions like
Ack Ack, Native Diver, Noor, Ferdinand, Kotashaan, Zenyatta, Beholder
etc. EG won over all major track sizes, SS did not. SS had a losing
record over 9f or larger tracks. SS also had a losing record at his home
track at Hollywood in California. EG won Grade 1 races 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f
and 12f. SS won Grade 1 races only at 9f to 10f. Better in any way is
subjective and true in the eyes of the beholder.
Many many greats were behind or tied on the head to head (series)
scoreboard, including Citation, Kelso, Easy Goer, Forego, Skip Away, Dr
Fager, Damascus, Arts and Letters, Swaps, Nashua, Round Table, Ancient
Title, John Henry, Unbridled, Silverbulletday, Serenas Song,
Pleasant Colony, Sir Barton, Ferdinand, Native Diver, and many many
others. Were the horses who were ahead (or tied) on the head to head
scoreboards better than these? Better is subjective, and there are
numerous factors. And even after those factors are factored in, who was
better is totally subjective. Noor beat immortal Citation 4 out of 5
races. Beau Purple beat immortal Kelso 3 out of 4. Big Spruce beat
immortal Forego 2 out of 3. Interco and Mehmet beat lengendary champ
John Henry 2 out of 3. Cabrini Green beat John Henry 4 of 4. Darby Creek
Road beat legendary John Henry 3 of 3. HOF (Hall of Fame) champ
Damascus beat HOF champ Dr Fager 2 out of 4. Cutlass Reality beat HOY
Ferdinand 3 times. Billy Kelly beat Triple Crown winner Sir Barton 8 of
    12. Formal Gold beat HOF HOY champ Skip Away 4 out of 6. HOF champ
Majestic Prince beat HOF HOY champ Arts and Letters 2 out of 3. Pretense
beat HOF champ Native Diver 5 times. Clem beat HOF HOY champ Round
Table 3 times. Summer Squall beat Champion Unbridled 4 out of 6.
Heritageofgold beat HOF champ Silverbulletday 3 out of 3 times. Jewel
Princess beat HOF champion Serenas Song in 3 of 3 races. Crystal Water
beat HOF champ Ancient Title 4 times. Akureyri beat Champ Pleasant
Colony 3 out of 4. And what? Who is better? That is totally subjective.
There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior
career, superior and better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes
wins, wins against older horses and open company, running times, avg
running times at various distances and at all distances, head to heads,
records set, still standing records, weights carried and weights
conceded, stakes wins and stakes wins vs. open company/older
horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or
campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority and dominance,
injuries, rider errors, training and trainer errors, win/loss %s, trips,
amount of races run, post positions, campaign and career earnings with
and without bonuses, races with drugs and medications allowed/used,
races with no drugs and medications allowed/used, etc etc and many
many more. But even after those factors are factored in, who was better
    is still totally subjective.
Easy Goer and SS were both greats. Easy Goer won 12 total stakes, 9
    Grade 1 wins at distances of 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f, and 12f showing
versatility on all tracks and many distances. SS won 7 total stakes, 6
Grade 1 wins but only at distances from 9f to
10f. Both versatile indeed, but that is a big difference in versatility.
Easy Goer also defeated older horses Six times at ages three and four
while conceding a good amount of weight in quite a few of them. SS
defeated older horses only two times at ages three and four. Many other
factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of
career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins -
14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times
at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8
    million to about $ 3. 8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to
    64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i)
    wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three and four - 6 to 2 ;
    j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and
12f, SS at only 9f to 10f ; and other factors that would favor Easy
Goer would be varying distances won at, records set, near records set,
still standing records, running times, avg running times at all
distances, campaigns, durability, constitution, dominance and
superiority in races - average win margin and average loss margin,
weights carried, weight concessions, etc. They were both greats no
doubt, but IMO other than SSs slim edge in their head to head races,
Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors
and categories. Both greats, but In my opinion Easy Goer was a better
horse than SS, and had a superior body of work and career than SS. But
of course, once again, better in any way is still totally subjective.

Delmar CLUB1 The litmus test of a champion is running and winning drug-free, without any raceday performance enhancing drugs. It was to New York's credit that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other huge, historic, prestigious G1 races stood as huge obstacles to drug-dependent horses. NY was the only state during those times that banned all raceday performance enhancing drugs. Winning any big race on drugs was/is not what racing is about. As far as distances, Easy Goer won Grade 1 races drug-free at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and 12f, and ran many more races with much less time and rest between races; while SS won Grade 1 races only at 9f to 10f, and ran far less races with much more time and rest between races. The mile and a half has been and still is the litmus test of a champion in the entire world, as the entire world's classic distance around the globe has been and still is the mile and a half - the Arc de Triomphe, the English Epsom Derby/Oaks, Belmont Stakes, Japan Cup, Breeders Cup Turf, Irish Derby/Oaks, HK Vase, Dubai Sheema Classic, Japan Derby/Oaks, Gran Premio Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, Grand Prix de SC & Paris, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Washington, D.C. International, Turf Classic, Rothmans/Canadian Int'l, formerly the Jockey Club Gold Cup (formerly the third and final leg of the Fall Championship Handicap Triple Crown with the other two legs being the Marlboro Cup & Woodward, and formerly like the Breeders Cup Classic before 1984), formerly the Brooklyn (formerly the third and final leg of the Handicap Triple Crown with the other two legs being the Met and Suburban), the CCA Oaks (formerly the 3rd leg of the Filly Triple Crown), formerly the Woodward and Brooklyn, and numerous others. The mile and a half was still the litmus test of a champion and classic distance for America until the 1980's. The Only country in the world that has changed this to the shorter 10f is America; the rest of the world's litmus test of a champion and classic distance has been and still is the mile and a half. The ability to run 12 furlongs at speed remains a true test of a champion and a very valuable breeding commodity worldwide, and even in America still - Easy Goer, A.P. Indy, Empire Maker, Justify, American Pharoah, Point Given, Union Rags, Lemon Drop Kid, Seattle Slew, etc.

Never forget that the drug-free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer was the better horse than the drug-reliant & criminal juicer doper veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss. Means as much or as little as all the scoreboards reading Noor 4, Citation 1; Beau Purple 3, Kelso 1; Cabrini Green 4, John Henry 0; Darby Creek Road 3, John Henry 0; Gallant Bloom 4, Shuvee 1; Akureyri 3, Pleasant Colony 1; Big Spruce 2, Forego 1; Damascus 2, Dr Fager 2; Formal Gold 4, Skip Away 2; Billy Kelly 8, Sir Barton 4; Star of Cozzene 3, Kotashaan 1; & an endless amount more. In the Test of the Champion drug-free Belmont Stakes Easy Goer killed ss; like heart-filled drug-free wheat separating from heart-less drugged chaff, the heart-filled drug-free cream rose to the top. Easy Goer ran drug-free in the only state in the entire country at the time which banned all drugs, which banned all performance enhancing drugs; while the drug-reliant & criminal juicer doper veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss got exposed badly & romped when he was forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. The great drug-free Hall of Fame champion Easy Goer showed the world how to obliterate the drug-reliant sunday silence. The litmus test of a champion is running & winning drug-less without any performance enhancing drugs; and during that era New York was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs. Plus, as importantly, New York banned & didn't allow the criminal juicer doper veterinarian of ss Alex Harthill [arrested an endless amount of times for illegally doping/juicing an endless amount of horses] to perform his magic & juice the drug-reliant & criminal juicer doper veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant ss. During that era, it was a huge credit to NY [& the rest of the whole world] that the endless amount of their championship G1 races stood as humongous, gigantic obstacles to drug-dependent horses like ss; & these horses, like ss & many others, got exposed badly when they were forced to run drug-free with no-drugs at all. ONLY no-drugs drug-free races were/are true championship races. Only the drug-free no-drugs races could/can be called championship races. No-drug races kept/keep the outcomes crystal clear. No-drug races are the only true tests of champions. That is integrity, honesty, fair play & complete fairness for all. The drug-free Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer was the better horse than the drug-reliant & corrupt crooked criminal crook juicer doper veterinarian Alex Harthill-reliant s.s. In the drug-free EG's few very slim losses by the narrowest of margins to the drug-reliant ss, ss needed all of his performance enhancing drugs administered to him & still only beat him by the slimmest of margins. Plus, The drug-free Easy Goer won G1 races at 7f, 1 mile, 9f, 10f & 12f drug-free with much less time & rest between races & ran many more races at more fluctuating, different distances in faster times with far superior speed figures & performance ratings; while the drug-reliant ss only won G1 races at 9f to 10f with his ped drugs & much more time & rest between races & ran far less races. And most importantly, Alex Harthill confessed to illegally giving illicit, illegal performance enhancing drugs to s.s. I quote the DRF for the factual truths: "Harthill, toward the end of his life, was BOLD ENOUGH to tell Jay Hovdey of the Daily Racing Form how he illegally gave numerous horses (including Clenbuterol to SS) illegal drugs. Sunday Silence's veterinarian Alex Harthill ADMITTED illegally breaking the laws in enhancing his horses performances. In DRF articles in recent years & in the last few years of his life, SSilence's vet Alex Harthill ADMITTED to illegally using the immensely effective performance enhancing bronchodilator clenbuterol regularly in the 1980's 15 years before it was approved by the FDA on his horses, INCLUDING using it on sunday silence.
Some of Harthill's other favorite magic making performance enhancing drugs were Etorphine (infinitely more powerful than the aspirin-like bute), Banamine (5 times more powerful than the aspirin-like bute) and Sublimaze. The drugs Etorphine and Sublimaze are drugs that give horses such a sense of euphoria and well-being that they feel like they don’t have legs. Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration filed suit against Alex Harthill on 102 charges of possessing & using unusual quantities of controlled drugs, such as the powerful performance enhancing bronchodilator Clenbuterol, powerful steroids, loop diuretics, extremely powerful painkillers & very strong amphetamines, etc. Alex Harthill & raceday performance enhancing drugs have led to the destruction of integrity in North American racing. Harthill was at the vanguard of giving drugs to horses that were used to vastly enhance their performances, & they were remarkably effective turning good horses into great horses, bad horses into good horses, slower horses into faster horses, horses with no business winning doing so, & causing horses to run far over their heads. Harthill was a vet who had stolen a 30 length lead in the race to discover drugs that would significantly move up racehorses, & Harthill had no hesitancy in using whatever was available. Harthill was a magic man vet practicing the dark arts of racehorse manipulation. Harthill was arrested many times (Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, NY,etc) for tampering, bribery & doping horses with drugs. The drugs were & are so potent that their use or nonuse dramatically alters horse's performances (including SS). Sunday Silence's vet Alex Harthill did more cheating with drugs to win horse races than any vet in history." Besides Harthill admitting it to the DRF, there is the CERTAINTY of MOUNDS of more evidence regarding Harthill's illegalities. Never forget, case closed.

+Harold Hampton Of course Easy Goer won outside New York, and in the process he ran the fastest 7 furlongs of the year in Florida while doing so. New York also was the only state in the entire country that banned all drugs and medications back then. That is like saying if the race is at his home
track at Hollywood Park in California, or in drug free and medication free
races, or on 9f or larger tracks, ss didn't win. Both greats, but In my
opinion Easy Goer was a better horse than SS, and had a superior body of
work and career than SS. But of course, once again, better in any way
is still totally subjective and true in the eyes of the beholder. It
certainly is NOT the end of any story, enough said, nor proved anything etc. Just as the head to head scoreboards are NOT enough said or end of story (nor 'proved anything') for Citation (lost 4 of 5 to Noor), Kelso (lost 3 of 4 to
Beau Purple), Dr Fager (lost 2 of 4 to Damascus), Forego (lost 2 of 3 to
Big Spruce and Wajima), John Henry, Pleasant Colony, Sir Barton, Skip
Away and many many more. That is like stating the legendary Forego
didn't win outside of NY. Easy Goer actually did, while Forego actually did NOT. Easy Goer DID WIN outside of New York. Thats like saying SS didn't win at his home track of Hollywood in his home state of California, or on 9f or larger tracks - or in drug and medication free races, or in NY. Even though SS had a losing record at his home track of Hollywood Park in California -
he still was able to win there even though he had that losing record.
Many other
factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of
career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins -
14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times
at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8
      million to about $ 3. 8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to
      64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i)
      wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three and four - 6 to 2 ;
      j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f and
12f, SS at only 9f to 10f ; and other factors that would favor Easy

1989 HOY and the Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion Sunday Silence will always be the Drug-Free Test of the Champion (The Classic Distance for the whole world) winner; the most coveted prize is being the 1989 Horse of the year and Drug-Free Hall of Fame Champion in the Hall of Fame and beat Easy Goer 3 out of 4 times.
