Might be an odd request but I would be fascinated to hear about your favorite book quotes one day. Or maybe just your all time favorite moments from novels. Keep up the great content Mike!!
man I love hearing someone talk who loves books so much! I just got into reading recently with LOTR and your videos have been fantastic in helping me decide what I want to read next to get into these different genres. Watching your videos I can tell you can't even fully express how much you love a good story and that is exactly how I feel when I read something I like! Keep up the amazing work!
Hi guys! I’m sure plenty will bring up some I forgot. Right now I think my biggest omission would be Licanius by James Islington & The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff. But I’m sure there will be more.
I'd be curious to hear where you'd slot it. I rank it up there with Mistborn. Curious if it would make your Top 10 or if it would have been an honorable mention.
I knew what numbers 1 and 2 would be, and I'm delighted to see number 5 on the list too. Great to hear your thoughts on all of these amazing trilogies, a couple of which I need to read. Cheers, Mike!
Just finished the new book of the forgotten warrior saga. This series is great. It’s definitely one of my favorites. You should also try his new book that came out last year …Servants of War. Larry is becoming one of my favorite authors.
First Law tops my chart, I have read all three books at least a half dozen times and then I was introduced to Steven Pacey in the audiobooks, and wow, he brings the characters to life, with his numerous voices and accents. I fell in love all over again, and have listened to the series more times than I have read them and they still have yet to get old. I now own everything Ambercrombie has written on audio
You had mentioned "The Warlord Chronicles" in a video last year which piqued my interest, so I read all three books starting last January. Awesome trilogy! The first chapter or two was a challenge to get into the flow of the story, but it took off from there. I'll check out another of his series in the future. And years ago (mid 1980s?) a shopping mall about 20 miles away had a Waldenbooks at one end and a B. Dalton at the other. I was in book heaven whenever I went there!
Great list! So many trilogies that I want to read. --I'm happy to see Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn in this video. Definitely in my personal top 10. --It's great to see a Booktuber who enjoyed Icewind Dale. I read it years ago, and enjoyed it. It may be time for a re-read. Eventually. --Hope to finish the Mistborn trilogy. The beginning was quite promising, but life got in the way. Hope to re-start it and finish the trilogy. --Totally agree with the Thrawn trilogy. Mara Jade is one of the most awesome characters ever ( I confess to being a huge Luke/Mara shipper. Love Han/Leia too). It's canon for me. --Lord of the Rings. Unmatched. Simply unmatched. What a beautiful story with gorgeous writing and endearing characters. Other trilogies I really like: --The Hunger Games. --Obsidian Mountain trilogy by Mercedes Lacky and James Mallory --I'm likely in the minority, but I still have fond memories of the original Shannara trilogy. Thanks for sharing!
I honestly haven't read many trilogies. LOTR and SW Heir to the Empire (Thrawn trilogy) are the only two I can remember. Brian Lee Durfee's trilogy will probably make the list when I finish it along with Gwynne's Bloodsworn trilogy as well.
Man I love your reviews. I started with r.a. In 6th grade then progressed through the forgotten realms. Eventually tackling Stephen kings works….until I discovered Robert Jordan then back to king. Just basically I love what you do and I really appreciate your honest reviews.R.A. Will always be my favorite because of my childhood but I have to honestly say, it is nostalgia. He’s freaking awesome, I love his work. Yet, you have shown me so many other great authors, and dude I’m so appreciative. Ty.
This is my first Follett trilogy and I’m amazed by the historical part of it. Even though it’s a novel, you learn so much about how the powers shaped the world! One book down, I’m hooked!👍
Who doesn't like a Top Ten list?? lol. This was great Mike. THANK YOU for recommending We are the Dead!!! I'm 70% through and WOW!! Great video man.......OH and I think my Phils stole 2 out of 3 from ya down there this week. lol.
Thank you for all your reviews and your channel. Came across your channel 6 months ago and Watching your channel got me back into reading again. Appreciate the reviews and recommendations more than you know!
Ah Red Rising, the first video I’ve ever watched of yours like close to 3 years ago, when I think you had under 30k subscribers, was Red Rising! Trusted your thoughts ever since. Solid list Mike keep doin what your doin.
Red Rising has hit me in such a way that I truly feel about it the same way as many feel about Dune. Such incredible characterization, an engrossing world, and just so many things that make you think about the questions is brings up.Please dont do yourself the disservice of stopping after the OG trilogy it grows so well when Mr. Brown takes off the gloves and expands to multiple view points. I need to finish the second first law trilogy I love it as well. San Glockta is a top 3 character for me for sure.
Heir of the Empire will always be Episode VII to me. I remember my dad lurking, just waiting for for me to put it down so he could read it. He was skeptical at first but that trilogy quickly became a shared experience. Two bookworms, one book. Just glad we had two bookmarks. Heh.
I actually just bought the Thrawn Trilogy to read for the first time, I wasn’t alive when it came out but I’m excited to finally read the trilogy. At least we get to see Thrawn in the Ahsoka series.
Great choices as usual Mike. LOTR reigns supreme in my heart as well. Some honorable mentions in my world: Foundation trilogy, The Dragonlance Chronicles, and The Dragonlance Legends.
understandable, however LOTR is ba no means (other than "hey it's mostly sold as three separate volumes") a triolgy that being said, the best trilogy is a song of ice and fire 😅
Hold on, is that a Last Kingdom shirt!? Absolutely love that. Wish they’d make one with the “fate is inexorable” as they say in the book series. Just because of that, a sub from me.
Hi Mike, that's a good list, off the top of my head I can think of The Riftwar Saga (Raymond E Feist) & The Empire Trilogy (Janny Wurts & Raymond E Feist).
Great list! I was going to throw out some of my favorites but I'm realizing some of my favorites aren't actually trilogies! Riyria Revelations was republished as 3 volumes but really 6 books. Also I think of the Hitchhiker's Guide being called a trilogy despite being five books.
Hi Mike, I agree with your definition of reading for the pleasure of excapism. And it's always great to see that you include good books that are low commitment. :-)
My list would be really similar... plus I read First Law and Red Rising 100% on your recommendation and readalong for Warlord Chronicles. Yer a SFF sommelier Harry!
Developing good/great characters is SO IMPORTANT. I am with you. I can forgive messing up other facets of a story, but same - if I don't care about your characters - forget it!
Finished the second first law book not too long ago. I'm definitely confused and a bit annoyed. There is basically no story at all, and little to no world. Nothing really mattered in it. I'm very confused, and maybe the third book will fix things, but I'm kinda doubting it.
Oh man, I totally agree on the Thrawn Trilogy! I used to read Star Wars books religiously as a kid back in the 90s. They had a whole shelf of Star Wars novels in my local library and I read my way through it all. Grand Admiral Thrawn will always be my favorite Expanded Universe character. Loved him then, still love him now.
Hey Mike, I’m curious on your thought of the five Warrior Angels series. I don’t think I’ve seen a video where u covered it. Did u enjoy lonesome crown and the series overall?
Lols, don't check out Mike's review of name of the wind if you've a big kingkiller fan. And I gotta agree with his assessment, they are imo very overrated books
@vol94 I feel like the name of the wind isn't so good without reading the wise mans fear. So could be that both of those could be made better by Doors of stone. Maybe.
Mike - I would like to recommend: Harry Connolly’s trilogy “ The Great Way”, “The Founders” trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett, and “The Divine Cities” trilogy also by Robert Jackson Bennett.
I don't quite have 10 trilogies but here's my list! Top 3 is a sure thing, the rest I'm not so set on the order: 1) Troy by David Gemmell 2) Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee 3) Winnowing Flame by Jen Williams 4) Gods of Blood and Power by Brian McClellan 5) Riyria Revelations by M.J. Sullivan 6) Of Blood and Bone by J. Gwynne 7) Powder Mage by Brian McClellan I've read quite a few others and while I enjoyed some of them and would technically make my top 10 I wouldn't call them favourites.
as the time passes, year by year, I'm more convinced that LOTR (if it's really that much neccessary to call it a trilogy) should be just in honorable mentions. the story is absolute top of the fantasy literature for the time of it's release (even though I liked Hobbit more, but that's just a personal choice) but don't tell me that it has to be on top for the rest of time because there are lots of better (maybe even as inovative as lotr was, take asoiaf for example) books writtten since then. but if you want it on top just because it was inovative, I guess that in terms of trilogies (which lotr is not) there is none that much ahead of it's own time as lotr
Hey there. I love your videos. I totally respect your opinions. But I do feel like I need to chime in on the Star Wars thing! I hadn't read any of the old EU when Disney bought it and made the sequel trilogy, but I wanted to find out if the Disney canon novels did a decent job of filling in the gaps. And to a point, the Aftermath trilogy certainly scratches that itch of a post-RoTJ story. And the "Shattered Empire" comics explain Operation: Cinder, which is a cool way for Palpy to give the galaxy a giant middle finger, in the event of his death. Which is 100% what the character would do, imo. Meanwhile, I just started Heir to the Empire, and there are certainly differences in the approach. But Timothy Zahn also wrote an additional 6 books that are Disney canon now too. So I'm not saying you should like the decision to wipe the slate clean with a new Disney canon. But if you give them a shot, I think you'll at least enjoy Aftermath: Life Debt and Aftermath: Empire's End. They do a very good job of explaining what happens after Endor, in the year that follows. And it goes into how there was a contingency plan that he enacted out of sheer bitterness to those who survived him. The Imperial remnants also become factionalized so it's interesting to see how that unfolds. And it's all part of a single unified canon timeline, which makes it easier to sift through what you're reading, heh.
Some of my favorite trilogies Lord of the Rings Foundation Trilogy* Earthsea Trilogy* Children of Time trilogy The Final Architecture trilogy Faded Sun trilogy *I know these were expanded beyond trilogies, but the original 3 books of each series still hold together as a trilogy.
Animal companion, alright I’m convinced. Also I agree with counting trilogies that are part of a larger series cuz I wouldn’t be able to make a top ten with out it lol
I love the Mistborn series but I never liked the Stormlight Archive. I've read them all but I will never read them again. Will I read future books in the series? Probably because I love the Cosmere but Stormlight Archive is not the highlight of this universe for me. The Thrawn Trilogy? I read it at least once a year just like Lord Of The Rings. This is the real sequel. Not the garbage Disney released.
Great list! No surprises 😂 I've read most of these and agree that they are all amazing. My library just got Jade Legacy so I'll be getting to that soon.
My favorite trilogy is the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. There was just something terribly heartbreaking about returning to a world that was previously saved only to find its lands corrupted, people's enslaved, and ancient cruelties relived. No other book trilogy comes close to hitting me that hard.
@@rosssims7224 I read the first Dune and felt it was ok. Probably much better at the time, but so many others have been influenced by it, that it feels like so many other things. But the sequels (Mesiah, Children, and God Emperor) are absolutely worth the ride.
On of mine is The Straw Men trilogy by Michael Marshall, a brilliant inventive, intelligent and gripping writer in the horror thriller genre (and in sci-fi as Michael Marshall Smith).
I love original star wars trilogy but most people have never seen them. They've seen George Lucas remaster crap where he tries to get woke. Han shot only. He's a cold blooded killer.
The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Key is one of my favorite trilogy. The writing is beautiful and the caracthers well rounded. A group of friends that gets thrown from our world into a parallel fantasy type universe. Great ride.
Nah, there is nothing wrong with always loving Mistborn. I like all the cool new fantasy too but Mistborn will always be way way up there for me too. I’m not such a fantasy hipster that I’m too cool for Mistborn all the sudden.
I’d just like to say that an orange is not and never will be a lizards foot. To broadcast this misinformation will only serve to confuse all the porcelain cats that are trapped inside giant brandy glasses.
I don’t know if I’ve read enough trilogies to have a top 10, but I’d definitely have Greenbone, Lord of the Rings, Mistborn, and Red Rising in it. Outside of those, I’d have the Nevernight trilogy in it. I also have yet to read the 3rd book in a handful of trilogies, so possibilities are definitely there.
I'm almost done with the red rising trilogy and it is amazing. First Law was dang good! I'm scared to move on to the newer books. I don't want to sully my take on that world. I need to start Drizzt, Mistborn, and you are making a good case on starting live ship
All the Timothy Zahn and Kevin Anderson expanded universe books were stellar... dad had them on the shelf listed as compulsory reading before I could dive into any proper adult fantasy when I was growing up. The storytelling was spectacular. Sad to see all of it replaced with Disney canon.
Last year I did the read along on the channel of the Warlord Chronicles by Cornwell, and I can confidently say that it’s my favorite trilogy of all time. I can’t believe I’ve still never read a Sanderson book!! For no particular reason either, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But I gotta read Mistborn this year. Also, Mike, “Destiny is All”?? Isn’t that The Saxon Tales??
Trilogies in my top 10 that aren't in yours: 1) The Dark Elf Trilogy, by RA Salvatore. While the Icewind Dale trilogy is very good, The Dark Elf Trilogy is far and away may favorite Drizz't arc. It is probably even in my to top 10 (or at least top 15) book series. 2) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy. Does this Trilogy have 5 books? Yes. Is it still called a trilogy? Yes. If there is anyone who can get away with a 5 book Trilogy, it is Douglas Adams. 3)The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K. Le Guin. Yes, there are 6 Earthsea books now, but for 17 years it was a trilogy, so I'm counting it. 4) The Giver Trilogy, consisting of "The Giver", "Gathering Blue", and and "Messenger". Admittedly, there is now a 4th book, but that came 8 years after the third and when I discovered The Giver had tangential books, that 4th book did not exist.
Dammit. I watched this thinking that I'd pass some time with it, that I'd probably either read the books or not care about them. You sold me on everything I'd not read. EVERYTHING. sigh. I've got a lot of reading to do.
I just picked up the Farseer Trilogy and am about a third of the way into the first book and am loving it so far, I love her writing style and character development, it's a tough one to put down lol.
1. Lord of the Rings
2. Mistborn Era 1
3. Licanius Trilogy
4. Powder Mage Trilogy
5. Liveship Traders
6. Thrawn Trilogy
7. Gods of Blood and Powder
8. The Farseer Trilogy
9. Of Blood and Bone Trilogy
10. First Law Trilogy

1984 kid here, mentioning Waldenbooks was a nostalgic gut punch 😮
Great as always Mike 😁
I used to love going into Waldenbooks as a kid - preteen. Then I guess they went away. 1989 for me
Waldenbooks is where I bought my set of Lord of the Rings with the horrid 90's covers. Great memories there.
@@kirkpetersjr Yeah, I don't really know when they went away. There was one in the mall where I live, and then there just wasn't

I think you’d love them all.
The First Law is by far my favorite trilogy. One that's rising fast for me is the forgotten warrior saga by Larry Correa
Wow😊
At the beginning I'd like to guess that number one is either LOTR or The First Law
.
Edit at end of video: I've been here awhile
🥰
Love these kind of list, one gets so many good recommendations from them. What I would have liked to see are some book covers...
Exactly why I'm watching...besides the fact Mike has a great channel. Win win!

I'm in the middle of First Law right now and feel I will soon be on my soapbox screaming about it.
This is the Way.
Cool! I'm not big on Sanderson or Tolkien, but variety is the spice of life.

I honestly haven't read many trilogies. LOTR and SW Heir to the Empire (Thrawn trilogy) are the only two I can remember. Brian Lee Durfee's trilogy will probably make the list when I finish it along with Gwynne's Bloodsworn trilogy as well.

And it's all part of a single unified canon timeline, which makes it easier to sift through what you're reading, heh.
Red Rising first trilogy blew my MIND this year.
Some of my favorite trilogies
Lord of the Rings
Foundation Trilogy*
Earthsea Trilogy*
Children of Time trilogy
The Final Architecture trilogy
Faded Sun trilogy
*I know these were expanded beyond trilogies, but the original 3 books of each series still hold together as a trilogy.
Animal companion, alright I’m convinced. Also I agree with counting trilogies that are part of a larger series cuz I wouldn’t be able to make a top ten with out it lol
Truth
You should read musashi it’s like the manga vagabond but it’s a different tale on the story and I believe it’s what vagabond was inspired from
I love the Mistborn series but I never liked the Stormlight Archive.
Not listened to many audiobooks but my favourites are Red Rising 1-3, Mistborn, LOTR (Phil Dragash Theatrical version) and First Law.
I'm going to have to bookmark this. I read the Thrawn and loved it. The Warlord trilogy would be my #1 of trilogies and I'm on red rising now.
My favorite trilogy is the original Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever Series. Very good character development.
Great list! No surprises 😂
I've read most of these and agree that they are all amazing.
I'm starting this soon I hope I love it
@@leslielovesreading5665 If you enjoyed the first chronicles, then you'll enjoy the second.
This video made me finally stop putting off reading Red Rising... and I just want to say thank you for making it. Phenomenal series so far.
i reread Tolkien every year, its my cozy reading,my safe space
Mine too 😊
Mike! Try your top 5!books with Animal Companions…..
Already did a vid on animal companions
Currently reading Lord Of The Rings for the first time. I’ve been enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would after coming off of ASOIAF
I just did that last month. The Fellowship didn’t really work for me but I’m really glad I read it
I typically don’t like writing from older authors. It just doesn’t hold up as much in my opinion. Tolkien is the exception to the rule.
I’m nervous to start it because it’s so built up. But I feel as if I must. Same for Dune.
I absolutely love Dune
@@rosssims7224 I read the first Dune and felt it was ok. Probably much better at the time, but so many others have been influenced by it, that it feels like so many other things. But the sequels (Mesiah, Children, and God Emperor) are absolutely worth the ride.
Hey Mike, I'm a new viewer but you've convinced me to give Red Rising a try.
Love to hear it! Enjoy.
On of mine is The Straw Men trilogy by Michael Marshall, a brilliant inventive, intelligent and gripping writer in the horror thriller genre (and in sci-fi as Michael Marshall Smith).
The new audio versions of the LotR trilogy by Andy Serkis are absolutely amazing
I love original star wars trilogy but most people have never seen them. They've seen George Lucas remaster crap where he tries to get woke. Han shot only. He's a cold blooded killer.
Thought The Five Warrior Angels or Of Blood and Bone might have earned at least honorable mention. Great list though!
The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Key is one of my favorite trilogy. The writing is beautiful and the caracthers well rounded. A group of friends that gets thrown from our world into a parallel fantasy type universe. Great ride.
Nice to hear someone who’s familiar with Guy Gavriel Kay! I read Tigana and loved it!
Nah, there is nothing wrong with always loving Mistborn. I like all the cool new fantasy too but Mistborn will always be way way up there for me too. I’m not such a fantasy hipster that I’m too cool for Mistborn all the sudden.
Agreed 💯 Mistborn is imo the best fantasy trilogy of our time.
I’d just like to say that an orange is not and never will be a lizards foot. To broadcast this misinformation will only serve to confuse all the porcelain cats that are trapped inside giant brandy glasses.
Terry Pratchett 's Bromiliad. On audiobooks.

Folks do love a Top 10
yep, Waldenbooks and B. Dalton's. LMAO
Red rising mislabelled as YA.. I have to disagree there, its 100% YA.
If you want a great samurai story, check out Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa
I personally call morally gray characters as questionable heroes/villains.
Red rising 2 broke me. I bought the third but couldn't bring myself to open it
I'm almost done with the red rising trilogy and it is amazing.
I loved the first trilogy of Thrawn from Zahn. And agreed, Disney has gold they could tap into but seem to refuse to.
YA trilogy to consider: Riddlemaster of Hed…
Awesome list
Last year I did the read along on the channel of the Warlord Chronicles by Cornwell, and I can confidently say that it’s my favorite trilogy of all time. I can’t believe I’ve still never read a Sanderson book!! For no particular reason either, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But I gotta read Mistborn this year. Also, Mike, “Destiny is All”?? Isn’t that The Saxon Tales??
So good, right?!
Completely agree re Red Rising and the question of Trilogy. I love Sevro.
Trilogies in my top 10 that aren't in yours:
1) The Dark Elf Trilogy, by RA Salvatore.
I really enjoyed Dark Elf. Just liked Icewind Dale a touch more.
Dammit. I watched this thinking that I'd pass some time with it, that I'd probably either read the books or not care about them. You sold me on everything I'd not read. EVERYTHING. sigh. I've got a lot of reading to do.
Enjoy!
I just picked up the Farseer Trilogy and am about a third of the way into the first book and am loving it so far, I love her writing style and character development, it's a tough one to put down lol.
Is that shirt a reference to Bernard Cornwell's Uhtred of Bebbanburg?
