I think NUC needs to make a clear resolution on this matter; this was the same brouhaha when LASU VC was to be appointed in 2021. The matter of Ph.D vs Fellowship of Medical and Dental colleges need to be resolved.
Someone would finish part 1 and part 2 of fellowship programme with two different projects and papers for 7 years and u will tell that person to go back and start doing masters and PHD. Does that even make sense? if I am a consultant obstetrician and gynaecological surgeon, it means I am a five star general in that field. what is it that i am mastering again when I am already an authority in the field.

So, after 7-8 years of medical school(which is enough to get 2 masters and a PHD) and another 6-10 years of residency, you expect the doctor to go and get a masters and PHD to teach when he is already an authority in the field. Is he getting a masters in which of the clinical medicine exactly? there is no masters in obstetrics and gynae, or ophthalmology, nor psychiatry, nor urology etc. it's obvious these persons don't understand how medicine works. It will be difficult to avoid this structure for the medical field. There are fields particularly in engineering where attainment of professorship takes longer than all the process you just mentioned.

Joining university in medical profession is like automatically you are demoting you self in terms of salary as he rightly said. In 6 months time by God grace i will become a consultant, and based on what I'm seeing i will never join university. As a fresh consultant working in federal medical center without joining university, your salary is far more than that of the professor working in the university that trained you. The answer to ur question is too difficult for thin brained individuals to understand or appreciate... the structure of medical education is complex, more complex than some of the empty degrees most of u guys carry around.
You are not fully qualified to educate or train a doctor at either the undergraduate or postgraduate medical level to produce a doctor ( MBBS) or a specialist( Fellowship) with possession of a mere PhD. You must have a fellowship to do this. It is the highest qualification required in Nigeria,like most other countries.Having only a PhD in Medicine only allows you a career in academics and research,but certainly not enough for you to train and produce a medical graduate. That is the peculiarity of the medical and dental professions.

Let me try to educate you. The fellowship program as outlined by the training colleges has rigorous academic,research and professional components; which have been noted to have ,at the minimum,equivalent, if not higher academic demands as any Ph D program.
