Its been and gone.. what we need is a ZINE renaissance!! Tho i think i would pluck my eyes out if i had to read the fluffy ones advertised in this video.. i much more prefer things that make me laugh.. usually in INCREDIBLY bad taste.. not making fun of anyone.. MAKING FUN OF EVERYONE!!! Whether u have a stump leg.. or a bung eye.. gay, straight trans etc.. i think political incorrect zines are the funniest ive ever read.. but they died out in the 70s and 80s.. i would LOVE to see that again.. im not a hate filled person.. i would never want anyone to feel victimized.. i just think that freedom of speech is incredibly important.. and freedom of IDEAS are even more so.. The other day i have an awakening.. i saw this feminist "STAND UP" .. i had already written about 10 messages in the comment section about how her comedy isnt COMEDY and is just a lecture.. and bad mouthing men.. and i like to think im fairly sharp.. but i had been shooting people down like this for years.. it suddenly dawned on me.. THIS!! is how THEY SEE MY COMEDY!!! I instantly deleted my messages and shut up... funny how u can stand on a soap box and be guilty of defying the very ideology u espouse. Either way.. MORE ZINES no matter how flowery is a GREAT IDEA!! :)
I’m a dark surreal illustrator, this video inspired me to revamp some old zine projects ..social media has become exhausting and zines sound like a healthier alternative, Thanks for the vid🤘🏾💀
This video really resonated with me! I'm such an analog person. I would always rather hold a physical object than do things digitally. This makes me want to create my own zine and find out if any of the creators I follow have their own zines. I will definitely be looking into this much more! Thank you for sharing.
I love your interpretation of what is happening in our culture around art. The Zine helps us get out there in a more personal way and they, fun and an inexpensive way for someone to buy art.
this video has honestly inspired me to make a zine, also think i might start buying them when i can!! they're such a lovely alternative to mindlessly scrolling through art on instagram
I love that you're talking about ZINES!!! Oh, I miss them! I loved learning the true history- fascinating stuff. I thought they were just a thing from the 80's and 90's since they became a cult favorite past time at my high school in the mid 90s and I even started to make one when I was a teen. I had a couple that friends made and used to pore over them constantly. I really feel the same as you in regards to "over instagram" and wanting to get back to the slowed down, focused, and intentional appreciation of art. I think it's why I've turned to following a lot of artists on youtube. *One last thing: I highly recommend Frannerd here on YT and as a wonderful zine/comic artist- she's amazing :)
Yes I love zines! I remember picking up my very first one in a small independant bookshop on holiday. I have never thought of replacing my awful instagram habit with it, will be reaching for them now though!
Thank you so much for showing these wonderful zines! I made a batch of zines for her funeral after my beloved aunt had past. I embellished each one with beads, ribbon and felt angel wings. Everyone loved to take home the little token as a small reminder of her long life. To this day I also love looking through it. ❤
This was such a lovely, gentle, informative, intelligent and cosy video! I'm doing my undergraduate major project about zines and hosting my own zine workshop, and this was the perfect way to help me calm down amidst a very stressful period! Thank you x
wonderful!!! I'm inspired now. I used to love zines and I just haven't thought about them in a really long time. Thanks for the reminder. Also, I love pigeons too!! I had a pet pigeon when I was a kid named Whatever and she was beautiful and sweet.
Zines sound like wholesome things to collect. They're small thoughts that you can just put on a shelf and think about before you sleep. That's a cozy way of thinking about setting up an environment for your mind.
Thank you for this video! I've made some little zines way back in college and forgot how fun the whole process can be. Now I really want to try it again so thanks for reminding me that zines are awesome! :)
i've added 6 new zines from artists i don't know to my collection - and am on the hunt for more - what an inspirational video holly -- i love the range of topics and freedom of expression in zines....thank you for the reminder :).
I just joined Instagram a few weeks ago. My first scroll through- left me slightly disappointed. You are so refreshing. Thank you for saying everything I've been thinking - since that first scroll- and missing the feel of paper. Its cathartic- putting your ideas out into the world. Thank you.
I have just bought printer paper to make my own zines. I’ve just not got round to it yet I will call it the Tartanite tribune 😉 thanks for giving me a boot up the backside to get it done T x
I was so excited to see the title of this video! Loved hearing about zines and where they started as well as your arguments for replacing social media with them. These videos are why I love your channel so much!!!
This is a brilliant take on zine culture and the potential it has for artists and for social impact we can make. Excellent video-Ive got to get involved with a zine and pics my own too as most of us should. Love the escape from over exposure to art by an algorithm monster.
Your video showed up when I was searching for videos about zine collections. I watched it and instantly subscribed to your channel. So much food for thought.
I remember zines from the late eighties, they were all beige cream colored 😛. Can we say safely that zines are supercool but the bad thing is that they are sought mostly by other zine creators, not the people at large? Hope that’s wrong! Thanks for vid!
Absolutely love this video Holly! I've been taking a social media break too 😴 just took myself over to Etsy in search of more zines for my collection and ordered two more 😍 they're so cosy aren't they and wholesome. They're one of my favourite things to buy and collect from small businesses 💕
Zines are really great. I have collected so much different stuff over the years. Feminist Harry Potter Zines, weird Zines about Videogames, Toys, Plants, Magik, classic Hardcore/Punk Interview Zines, Comics, Illustration. I love the variety and topics. I need to make a Zine again.
That was so lovely! Also, it fuels me with new motivation to get into zine-making, something that I have already dipped my toes into in the past, but have so many more ideas!
Love this Holly! I don’t post on social media that often but every time I do or start focusing on it I start feeling stressed/overwhelmed. This really inspires me to start making zines (they’re so yummy!) - but also just to make without Instagram constantly in the back of my mind
Last year, I've considered doing a zine but after a homing situation popped up out of nowhere (and is still ongoing), I postponed it indefinitely till I get myself sorted out. Towards the end of the year, I want to do a Quarantine Experience Zine talking about what I have done and learnt during my time in Lockdown. The type of Zines I want are artbooks and fan comics. I wish I can contribute to a zine but I never find out about them in time.
I love this idea! You are the best, Holly! Who on earth wouldn't love getting something REAL and personal instead of looking at an IG image of yours for .01 seconds before flitting to the next?
Oh man, I was so surprised to hear you speak so thoroughly about class consciousness and the awfulness that is capitalism. That’s usually something most people just completely ignore. That was nice :3
Thank you for this video, Holly. Zines seem like a perfect vehicle for artists like me who love to explore many mediums. I'm in the process of leaving IG and FB and it feels freeing to be able to create what inspires me vs. create what looks good in my feed. I look forward to furthering my exploration of zine culture :)
Thank you for another very informative and inspiring video! Your videos give a sense of direction for people like me who feel overwhelmed by social media. Zines are such a great idea. I feel a bit trapped in social media and I admire that you have taken the courage to stay away from them and yet continue to appreciate other artists and create artworks as well. Looking forward to more inspiring content from you. 💜💜
Doing zines again has been on my mind for a while now. I like that you brought up the consumption aspect of art on instagram. However I have been wondering about the best way to use the format for those artists trying to establish themselves and make a living. I also agree that the quality of work would very likely change when there is no longer a need to meet the demands of the algorithms.
love this idea of zines as an alternative to social media. even a digital zine is so much more meaningful than any kind of social media post. inspiring to see these various and beautiful zines!! ❤️
Wonderful video! I adore zines! Another slower-form way I love enjoying art is watching art streamers on Twitch. You really engage with a single art piece fully for hours while you watch the artist create it :D
Excellent video!!! Just became obsessed with Zines! Love everything about them. A great platform for personal expression in art form and words. Thank you.
Holly, I totally agree with everything your saying! I love the idea and have been inspired by you to look into buying my first zine and possibly even making my own zine :)
What a great idea! I have stopped using instagram and Facebook for the same reasons you mentioned but have been struggling with the lack of connection with other artists. I made a couple of zines through MagCloud which is print on demand but it’s quite expensive. This is encouraging me to go more DIY! Thanks so much for sharing ❤
I love zines for all the reasons you said. Also because they offer me a budget friendly way to support other artists. The ones you shared were so wonderful - I wanted to order several of them! Unfortunately, when I went to order them, the shipping from the UK to the US was wayyyy more than the zines! This happens to me so often. I see a wonderful print, go to order it, and the shipping is astronomical I miss out on a lot of special things ☹️
This was super interesting - I now want to buy a few zines for myself and also have a go at making them, thanks so much for filming this Holly, it's a fantastic idea :)
Oh man. I've been thinking this a long time. A return to the "longform" and absolute solution to the digitalness. I wanted to open a zine and stationary shop (10yr fantasy) but up until last I figured paper might be dead. But all the screens I hope there is a return to zines.
This is such a lovely way to enjoy people's art. I used to love zines back in childhood when I would get a lot of fanart zines of my favourite anime/games etc. For some reason I never joined the dots on it being its own accessible medium for any topic under the sun! Excited to start exploring and maybe even makes some of my own! Also surprised to see how accessible zines are near to me, Stockport is practically on my doorstep! Can't wait to take a look :D
I’ve been feeling super inspired to try my hand at zine making lately so I really enjoyed this video! You made such great and insightful points about the downfalls of instagram as an artist. It really can be a struggle out here!
Really loved this! Totally agree with everything and have deleted all social media apps from my phone now. I have never been a 'churner' when it comes to art...I tend to put a lot of ideas and details into one piece and don't often feel inspired or original so I would hardly post...in fits and starts and constantly feeling depressed about my productivity. This Zine idea fits in much better with my pace of life and I also like the idea of getting out again and promoting face to face when we can! Very inspired thank you! I would love to collab. with you on a Zine one day!
I really enjoyed this video, particulalry the little history lesson about the origin of the Zines. I didn't really know about Zines, but I think I actually own one, which I purchased from an artist a few years ago and it included illustrations that she did when she went on a trip to Japan. xXx
Yesss! Zines are the best, I’ve recently got back into making them and it is so much more satisfying than creating for social media. It’s so nice to make a physical booklet and send it directly to people.... it feels a lot more meaningful. Also a fun way to experiment with different ideas and media! My favourite that I have bought recently is A Lonely Road by LostWaysClub (etsy), it’s a choose your own adventure single-player game and it’s so beautiful
this is so amazing and it is making me feel so inspired ahhh! really want to make a zine now. :-) and the pigeon zine is definitely one of the favourite ones you showed!
I love zines! I went to a new city last month and found the cutest used bookstore. I ended up buying 4 or 5 zines from local artists and it was really inspiring. I want to try and set up a zine festival in my town one day ♡♡
This is such a great initiative!! I've made a bunch of zines in my younger days and I've been craving a go at it again. Thinking I'll try and make a video about it this month! :) Thanks for this awesome thought-provoking topic!
I’ve loved zines for a long time. Great video. I actually got my art degree from Stockport college so had to comment when I heard Stockport mentioned 👍 haven’t watched many creative illustrating videos for a while, so it’s good to catch up.
lovely video, timely topic! was very interesting to get reminded about zines again. this inspired me to start thinking about some projects of my own, could be so fun. ...something's forming :)
Lovely to watch this video! Zines have been around for a long time and I hope they will continue to be popular in the future as well. Thanks for the listing of them.
Thank you Holly! I love zines so much! Time spent treasuring a zine seems so much more valuable than time wasted on IG. This video has really inspired me to get my little collection out and add to it. Do you have a PO Box? I made a zine a couple of years ago and would love to send one to you x
This is a really interesting video! I've always really loved zines when I used to go to museum exhibitions (usually about LGBT+ rights) it was so fun to see all the zines in the collections. I really recommend going to zine fairs when we can again. I know a fair few are doing some online events (Hackney Comic & Zine Fair are definitely doing something) now. A few comic stores even stock zines- GOSH comics in London has a small selection and I always tend to end up browsing there too, not at the moment though obviously! It's cool to see so many people making and talking about zines.
I've never heard of zines before but I LOVE the idea of them! I've just been for a nosey around t'internet & I think they're a good way to have a broad collection of an artist's work - especially if money or wall-space is tight. Also, lovely to meet a local artist. I'm about 20mins from Stockport :) xx
... omg I wanna print my own zine. That's exciting! Plus, It's great practicing printing! I had some issues for my design project in the first semester. I love print media.... yeah I know, my enviromental sin...
Thank you for this video! I have been feeling like leaving IG for a while now but felt scared about finding alternatives to showing and sharing my work, this is an excellent idea and I feel so inspired.
My god, this was needed so badly! I love this as a medium of sharing art and ideas, so inspiring, and made me feel hopeful that we can turn around the way we are damaging our minds and slow down while still engaging with art and forms of learning and protest. Thank you truly for sharing this, I am on etsy now looking for zines haha
Thank you for this video, it has got me really excited to look further into zines! For some reason I've always been a bit confused about what a zine is and how you make them, so I've not bothered learning more about them. But you've explained them so well.
Such a great video Holly! I am currently working on a zine regarding abortion laws and their connection to the witch trails. Silvia Federici wrote amazing books (for example "Caliban and the witch") about the time of the witch hunts in Europe and their connection to capitalism! Can totally recommend that :)
I just ordered that book actually, as it was referenced quite a bit in the zine. I'm so excited to read it! Your zine sounds so interesting, I hope it's going well!
I'm also new to the zine scene and just recently helped kickstart a few fanzines that I can't wait to see how they turn out! I'm definitely going to have to check out the zine about making zines, I'm inspired to make one myself! I also wanted to say that you've had me thinking about my own social media use - since one of your last videos. It's insanely difficult being the little guy trying to be noticed, so in response I've made a discord server specifically for artists and my handful of patrons to gather round and be heard, in effort to not fall prey to the scroll-trap. Hopefully the community blossoms with time and we can all support each other. ❤️
I love zines! and have made them myself, the only problem is, ill always just put them in a draw, or in between a book on a the shelf, then completely forget about it!
Bloody love this vid, Holly! Super inspiring and informative. I loooove zines and didn't realise there was such a political history to them, really great. I recently made a love spell zine, which I plan to photocopy and leave around my local community, which was the main driver for creating a zine and not a journal spread/ painting. Thanks so much for sharing x
This is SO lovely. I have a sketch book. I used to have an instagram that I would put my stuff up on there... but it was such a waste of time, personally. I didn't like feeling the dope kick when I got hearts on it and ... just, wasn't vibing with it. I deleted it. Kind of awesome there is actually an alternative for my kind of art.
I'd love to try and publish a zine around the theme of chronic illness (the wonderful curse I have acquired ✌️). It will be so fun to include a mixture of writing and art!!
I had to grab my phone after watching the video on my tv so i can comment ya. THIS VIDEO RULED! I really appreciate the info. Also the video style change up in the history of zines part was dope. I have so many artistic interests and this can be a way to merge them all together, along side all you wonderful info in the video. Which really felt like a snapped in ah ha moment. So thanks for that! Really agree with your take.
@@hollyexley haha great work for real, never even heard of zines. I know of magazines, but a sub culture thats essentially the same model but less mass programmed sounds awesome. Can be artistic and informative or even brand stuff. So cool. Also yeah as a reader too i gotta start checking out whats being created out there for my own entertainment. If i ever do get to making one youll be the first free copy saved.
So agree with you. Let’s all start a zine revolution!
yesssssssss viva la zine revolution
I’m in!!!
@@hollyexley oh Miss holly , u r a VICTIM OF CULTURAL MARXISM INDOCTRINATION OF THE IMPRESSIONABLE YOUTH

Our local bookstore has a great zine section. I miss wandering around the book store!!
That sounds amazing! I went to my first book shop in about a year the other day, it was exhilarating to say the least!

You should continue this series and do like a zine favourites/haul series :) this was such a good video!
Ooo that's such a good idea (and excuse to buy more!)
Thank you for including my zines, Holly! 💖🎀🌸
Thank you for making them Anke, I loved reading them.
this is so amazing and it is making me feel so inspired ahhh! really want to make a zine now.
Love that you talked about zines! Now I really want to make my own!
I’ve loved zines for a long time. Great video. I actually got my art degree from Stockport college so had to comment when I heard Stockport mentioned 👍 haven’t watched many creative illustrating videos for a while, so it’s good to catch up.
Now I am inspired! I did make 2 zines a few years ago...think I will do it again! Thank you!
They all look so wonderful. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Oh my goodness! Was just researching zines and thinking of making my own versions! What a great video!
Trying to learn more about zines as a method of documenting my projects and this video was so so informative. Thanks so much!
So glad you enjoyed, thank you!
Great video Holly, I got really excited and immediately went and favourited the pigeon zine on Etsy. I love pigeons!!!
Same! Love those guys.
lovely video, timely topic! was very interesting to get reminded about zines again. this inspired me to start thinking about some projects of my own, could be so fun. ...something's forming :)
Such a lovely and insightful video! Thank you, Holly! :)
I love this, Holly. All your videos are wonderful but this one especially struck a chord with me. Thank you.
Zines are popular on Tumblr... I enjoy buying and reading them. So many talented creative artists and writers
This was so wholesome! ❤
💙💙💙
Extremely beautiful and insightful! Thank you for sharing Holly! Keep going
Thank you for this video, it has got me really excited to look further into zines! For some reason I've always been a bit confused about what a zine is and how you make them, so I've not bothered learning more about them. But you've explained them so well.
I was literally JUST thinking about zines as content!
Great minds and all that 😃
Very inspiring Holly! Thanks for another great video :-) Hope you have a nice weekend x
Hi 👋
I’ve never heard of Zines but I’m glad I’ve learnt about them now - thank you 😊
Such a great video Holly!
@@hollyexley Oh great! You will not regret it I learned so much! Thank you, I am doing my best :))
I just deleted my IG last week so I will definitely be doing Zines because it sounds super fun!😊
I appreciate your appreciation for art!
I've always loved zines and this video came to me just at the right time. I always appreciate the thoughtfulness of your work. Thank you 💚
I'm also new to the zine scene and just recently helped kickstart a few fanzines that I can't wait to see how they turn out!
Thank you so much for sharing! I had no idea what zines really are, and they are amazing! I want to make some too!
I love zines! and have made them myself, the only problem is, ill always just put them in a draw, or in between a book on a the shelf, then completely forget about it!
PS, watch the film Moxie on Netflix.....
@@DistantHours101 I watched it! I should have mentioned it in this vid. I wonder if there have been any other films with zines in them...
Thanks; I wouldn't have considered doing zines. I like the concept very much.
That's an amazing idea, good luck with it!
Well, that answers a bit my questions :) ... and that is awesome...and a beautiful idea and gesture.
I love zines! Lovely collection you have there! 🤗
Agree 100%, thanks for the video and looking forward to getting into zines!
Thanks for watching!
Ooh, I went to uni with one of the illustrators from Roots zine 😊🌿
I'd love to try and publish a zine around the theme of chronic illness (the wonderful curse I have acquired ✌️). It will be so fun to include a mixture of writing and art!!
You should defo explore this!
Really agree with your take.
aw thank you so much Joshua, I am feeling extremely encouraged by your comment!
Such a lovely video, Holly. I have Dry Eye Syndrome so zines are a perfect way for me to spend an evening (often along with a great podcast)
