Not all four syllabic words are stressed on the second syllable. e.g eduCAtion(Third syllable), SOcialism(First syllable), convenanTEE(Last syllable), evacuEE(LAst syllable), ExaminEE(Last syllable).

Do the following to learn how to transcribe. *First, you should know that there is no one-to-one correspondence between sounds and letters. This means that letters are not evenly matched with sounds, for example, letter A in the word many is articulated as /e/ not /a/. *Learn and identify the sounds of the English language. Start with the 24 consonant sounds, then move to the 12 monophthongs and lastly the 8 diphthongs. *Start transcribing prefixes and suffixes as they both have a consistent transcribing pattern. e.g pre is usually transcribed as /pri/, tion /ʃ(ə)n/, un /ʌn/ etc. *Afterward, you can start practicing free morphemes and monosyllabic words.
Sounds are classed as either vowels or consonants. Vowels are sounds that can form a syllable on their own. Consonants are sounds that cannot form a syllable on their own. The letters α, ε, η, ι, ο, υ, ω are vowels. The letters β, γ, δ, ζ, θ, κ, λ, μ, ν, ξ, π, ρ, σ, τ, φ, χ, ψ are consonants.
Comprehension section is a test on your ability to interpret information from the text/passage. How well you are able to read and process the information and ideas in the passage will help in answering comprehension questions. There are a few approaches to textual analysis but the most effective is developing your understanding of passage. Also, you need to be able to identify and restate the keyword in the question and the passage.
Dear Alexandra, Please I was taught that emphatic stress could be identified by knowing their part of speech. Eg,two syllable words that are noun have their stress on the first syllable. Please make me understand. Thank you.
You are correct, but note; most of the two syllabic words that are nouns are often stressed on the first syllable, however, not all two syllabic nouns are stressed on the first syllable e.g hotel, event, design, result and degree, etc. These words are stressed on the second syllable.
Thank you for writing in Azubuike. Consonants are classified according to how they are produced. The articulatory description for each consonant includes three pieces of information, the voicing, the place of articulation, and the manner of articulation. Hence, you need to learn and know how to transcribe.
Thank you for writing in. JAMB tends to repeat questions from previous years and in most of these questions, there is an option E provided, now that says the reason for few and not all the questions found in English 2021 with option E.
By pronunciation the emphatic stress is located at the second syllable and remember democracy is a four syllabic word. Hence, emphatic stress is based on the correct pronunciation which leads to the correct emphatic stress.
Question 55 is asking us to choose the option that has the same consonant sound and the letter underlined is K in king, from the transcription on the board you would see that option B(think) has the same consonant sound as the letter K.
Please be reminded that printed copies are from different publishers and of various question types, the current 2021 past question we possess has no life changer.
