  • Let's make gnomes using egg trays and plastdough/ homemade clay/ air dry clay.
Gnomes have been a popular decoration item for quite some time now, and it’s no wonder why. These cute little creatures are said to bring good luck and happiness to any space they inhabit. If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to create your own gnomes, you will love this simple and affordable DIY project using egg trays and plastdough.
First, let's talk about the materials you'll need for this project. You'll need an egg tray, plastdough or any homemade clay/ air dry clay, acrylic paints, paintbrushes, and scissors. These items are all affordable and can be easily found at any craft store or online. You may already have it at home.
What is plastdough? Plastdough is my latest homemade clay experiment, modification of traditional no-cook salt dough with additional plaster of Paris.
The plastdough dry overnight in my room with heater on, but that's only about half thickness of the dough. It dries completely on the 3rd night. The heat helps to dissolve the salt faster. Once the heat dissolved and the clay dried completely, it becomes hard. If not, the inside part will still soft and weak structurally.
Do you remember our traditional saltdough that becomes hard when we bake the dough in the oven but crumbly if you don't bake it? Well, the heater/ sun/ stove/ hair dryer/ heat gun functioning like oven to dissolve the salt slowly.
I've also found out that the salt & plaster help to slow down the growth of mold in homemade clay. They are giving extra weight/ body to the clay too. The mini gnomes sculpture I make with plastdough feels heavier and sturdy.
Another important thing to note is the amount of water. Less water will make the clay harder and dry faster. Always test your clay by making a small ball. If the ball shape stays as it is, you have perfect consistency.
So, yeah... I am testing my new air dry clay recipe by making these easy gnomes craft project.
Whether you're making these gnomes for yourself or as a gift for a friend or loved one, they're sure to bring a smile to anyone's face. So why not give it a try? This craft is very easy that I make 2 gnomes at the same time.
You can even make more with different finishes/ colors to suit any occasion. Let’s make your very own adorable gnomes today.

Can you store it without it hardening? Like if you get interupted in the middle of making something.

Did you use the clay immediately or do we have to wait for how many hours?

Do you have to varnish any of your clay recipes? Or do they last with just paint ?
