Seconding the ladder idea, but if a suitable one can’t be found etc, i could recommend a clothes butler? There are ones that have shoulder-shaped parts, to hang a dress-shirt etc there, and maybe there are ones, that don’t look too modern, or maybe there are some vintage or antique ones?

That's my laundry plan, too. Sitting here for 16 hours doesn't make my clothes dirty. Showering before bed doesn't make my pajamas dirty. Working outside however or a house project is a totally different wearing experience. You've really got a BIG load in that washer. Have you considered putting your basket on the floor and loading and unloading from there? Also shaking the items outdoors before loading... I have a GSD who sheds 11 months, 3 weeks, and 6 days a year.

I’m here for it all! My partner and I are restoringish a 1914 Craftsman bungalow. I’ve spent the summer repairing and replacing cedar shakes and painting. Next spring is a new roof. I tackled all 22 windows 3 years ago. Unfortunately, someone had removed most of the old windows and stuck plexiglass on with caulk 😢, so I put in interior mount replacement windows while keeping the old frame and beautiful molding. It’s a long process, and your videos often keep me company while I’m working.

This! Yes! I came here to suggest a clothes butler. There are ones with a chair seat, and those without. Some have a clothes hanger style top, some are more rudimentary with just a bar across the top. You can basically drape your slightly worn clothes across the top and wear them later, or just do that overnight to air them out before hanging them up again. Or before wearing them again to go back to whatever task you were doing before you changed out to other clothes.

Sounds like the clutch or the throw out bearing went out. One of my gripes with buying used cars with a manual transmissions is that there is no way to know the skill of the previous drivers. I had a car with a glazed clutch plate that made it slip a bit in low gears. It took almost 2 years to get the glazing to wear off, and I was basically the only one that could drive it as I was used to it.

    • @shannonmakessomethingelse
      @shannonmakessomethingelse  4 дня назад +12

Yea, so true... it very much wasn't ideal at all. But the transmission was super close to being dead (that first time we replaced it) and there was only one garage in a 1.5 hour radius of us that would change it out, and even then, we had to order the spare part from Quebec cuz that was all we could find. So we knew right away we were taking a risk on it, but it was either that or buy a new car on the spot and at that moment --it was before I'd released any house videos, so had poured a ton of money into the house, but had made zero money from any videos--, I legitimately couldn't afford another used car 😭😭. I was actually so stressed about the situation that I went upstairs and had a good cry and a nap... very out of character for me!

Keep your washer forever . Even pay for repairs is cheaper than a new machine . The new ones don’t last 5 years. All the parts are plastic or computerized and wear out fast. Computer parts cost$$ for repairs so it forces you to buy a new machine.

Second this. To top it off even beyond the greedy/environmentally hostile "planned obsolescence" existing business model - the most egregious flaw in most modern appliances is that the manufacturers don't put a $0.20 electric component in (resistor? diode?) to fry in the event of a power surge. Noooo, they let the main computer board fry, so you are faced with either an expensive computer board replacement, or entire appliance replacement scenario. Just like the most environmentally friendly building is the repurposed older one, (Kudos to you and Phil), my opinion is that the machine that does it's job for decades and decades well (not with negligible amounts of water that did not get my carpenter husband's clothes clean), is far more environmentally friendly than the carcasses of the many shoddily made modern ones that would die in the same time period. (why yes, this does make me mad!!)

My dad has sensitive skin, so I grew up with everything unscented, and then when I started grocery shopping on my own, I didn't think about it, and got scented detergent, and found out that I *also* have sensitive skin. I broke out in hives, and found out that heavily scented things is also a migraine trigger for me. So that was fun. I live in an apt where doing 2 loads of laundry costs me around $6.25 - 6.50 to wash & dry(it’s that cheap cause we game the system with 2 washes and 1 dry with a quarter or two to dry the 2second wash. Also Levi’s came out with a save water system for dying jeans/jackets/etc. They also recommend that you don’t wash your jeans for a year (but you gotta wear them). It’s recommended that you use a damp cloth to get off stuff you spill. If you think they’re starting to get funky - freeze them for 3 days. I dry brush the insides. Clothing lasts longer if you don’t wash it after one wash. I’m like you in that I don’t sweat a lot. I hang up my workout shirt and sports bra near a window that is open. We get a lot of wind from April to October. My younger sister, who lives 3 hours away has always had her own washer. When I used to visit regularly I’d always bring 2-3 loads of laundry and she’d complain. Then she spent a week with me and had to do laundry and the penny dropped.

Whenever you have a heavy thing to move, use the walking stone method. Tip to the side swivel back, tip to the other side, repeat till it gets where you need it. To go up the stairs, lay it down and shove.

Well, if you have a perfectly funktioning washing machine, I think you should keep it. Or maybe look into the actual numbers, but... If it's with washing machines as everything else, the quality only got worse over time. And so if you buy a new one it might not last very long.
But what do I know! 🤷
As to the question of perfumed or not for the detergent, I go for something allergy/environment friendly, so no perfume. Although I'm not allergic, I just decided to go in that direction, and got used to the non smell. Now I get annoyed whenever I buy something secondhand and it has perfume in it that doesn't go away in the wash 👀

About washing clothes, I use a front loader because it’s gentler on clothes and uses less water. I also use environmentally friendly washing sheets for sensitive skin, fragrance free. I never use a clothes dryer and mostly dry my clothes on racks inside because the sun here is so harsh it can destroy clothes. You can also make your own washing powder, plenty of recipes online 😊

4:47 lol my grandmother has one of those classic arm chairs for worn but not yet to be washed clothes and yeah, it does take up room. Maybe your limited space one of those collapsible wall mounted drying wracks would work for you? There are some you can still hook onto without opening when you dont have much to put there and let it down when theres more. Have a coat hook above to keep hooks/hangers when they arent in use? Added bonus there are actually vintage and antique collapsible pieces meant for hanging/drying clothes so there are some that could be picked up and given a new home or getting something calling back to that instead of having to go modern. Some are truely lovely.

Very glad that you know that those things are called "hot pads" and not "pot holders". Bring on the Halloween! I'm really curious to see if the Halloween decorations in the attic are vintage. If so, you could be sitting on a fortune. Might help pay for the new car.

Something you might try before washing your dog-hair covered mats/bedspreads is to toss them in the dryer for a few minutes to remove some of the hair before putting them in the washer. Having three cats, I find this to be one of the best ways to keep excess cat hair out of the washer.

I agree with the "worn but not dirty" concept. I work a desk job from my home (so wearing the same shirt 2 days in a row can be a thing if I don't have video calls). Unless it has been exceptionally hot or I have done some significant work that would cause my clothes to get sweaty or dirty in some way, I try to re-wear my tops a couple times and my jeans many times before washing. My best solution is a little set of hooks in the bathroom or near my bed where I can hang up these clothes to be re-worn.

Regarding the fragrance of the laundry soap, one time I had a family emergency and had to leave for a couple of weeks. When I got home, my husband informed me that he had done the laundry and had been itching ever since. He insisted that we stop using regular laundry soap and switch to fragrance free and anti-allergic, and quit using normal Clorox. I acquired those things, and the next time I went into my bleach bottle, I discovered that he had used about half a bottle to wash his white undershirts and underwear. This was probably the source of his unhappiness with how his little bottom felt. However, he swore that was not the case, so ever since then I have had to use fragrance free laundry soap and the blue Clorox stuff that is Clorox weakened and has other stuff in it to get rid of the stains. Ah, the lovely never-ending need to live with a person even though they make you crazy.

You can make some pot holders take all your fabric scraps the smaller ones and cut them up for stuffing wrap them in a thin piece of fabric quilt them up and that'll make them thick enough and then put some good fabric on the outside

Just because it is called fast fashion doesn't mean it is disposable fashion. I too, keep my clothes for decades. They have several holes before I deem them unusable. I also think most people get more than one wear out of a pair of clothes. I keep them folded in a cabinet drawer so they stay off the floor and it gives them a chance to air out.

For clothes that are not dirty, put up on the wall something like coat hooks, and you can hang up several items on each hook they will be off the floor and able to air out...a bench will still clutter the space.

I do the same with clothes. Make a box that can handle 2 clothes rods, or 1. It would have to be wide enough to accommodate hangers. It would be a free standing open closet. Then you can hang clothes for airing and have a place to store shoes under the clothes. Put hooks on the outside facing the corner to hang PJs and other private things. Other than the wooden rods and rod hangers you probably have enough scrape to make it. Some paint and your done. Maybe put this on the other side of the door where you have more waking room.
