Goodbye to Imsouane Morocco as We Know It 🇲🇦 Popular Tourist Destination is DESTROYED For What?!

- Mor Acro goes on a Moroccan surf trip with friend @sackedsurftour to see if the rumors are true. The rumor was that Imsouane Morocco, the crown jewel of Moroccan surf tourism, which has drawn comparisons to Santorini, will be destroyed in the name of new developments. Similar to Tifnit, the motivation for this sudden and dramatic demolition is cloudy. Historic neighborhoods of Troglodyte dwellings have been removed, removing the identity of the soussi people who have called it home for so long. Titled, “the village of fisherman,” will have a face lift, but hopefully not lose its heart and soul which has won over tourists, both Moroccan and foreigners for years.

That’s so Sad Bro.. last year , when I was in Portugal planning my next destination I found out your video and it immensely inspired me to go to Morocco, especially Imsouane..
I took my first surf lessons in Cathedral.. the place that you which was quickly demolished, I did rent my board.. and drank some good coffee in Momo’s too
It was really sad to see this footage..
God I love Morocco
Would you still love it when it fully modernizes and starts looking the same and as generic as Dubai? Morocco wants to modernize everything but the people and foreigners just want restoration of its classical identity.
@@harrybarry5224 I love Morocco as a whole I would like it no matter what. It’s not just the country it’s the people.
It will never be like Dubai. I think a little modernisation will be good but not too much. My partner is Moroccan so I have been travelling to and from Morocco many years. I don’t agree with people losing jobs and homes just so people can modernise things but in certain cases then upgrading is good yes

Beautiful place!
@@harrybarry5224 it will never look like Dubai because we have our own identity, architecture and heritage and they make sure to separate modern places from traditional ones. They know what makes a place lovely and touristy and they have to take this in consideration.

Nature seen and appreciated! You filmed a bald ibis, very rare bird, only seen in this region of Morocco. ❤
We saw two of them, then the stupid dog chased them away!

I discovered Imsouane two years ago. This spot was already quite touristy and the bay was full of people from all over the world, English, Austrians, Italians, Spanish, French (like me) and always locals and surf teachers. All the tourists were there to have a good time, and no one was obnoxious like you see in other surf spots around the world.
I arrived at the spot on the first day as a complete stranger, but the summer atmosphere was friendly; everyone was congratulating each other, everyone was laughing, even the stray dogs were allowed their little surf session... On the other hand, the town, although rather dirty, had its charm, the kindness of the vendors was infinite, these little fish sellers on the harbour, these numerous restaurants, like "momo's", which prepared our snacks before surfing.
This small campsite was also part of the charm of Imsouane, which is fairly rudimentary. At the top of the cliff, with its hot water once in six, its toilets under repair and its dogs and cats that came and went between the pitches asking the tourists for food; the campers only had the bare necessities.
It's heartbreaking to see all that go, and it's even more heartbreaking to see this spot, this aura, this atmosphere, these people and these friends disappear. All this to make Imsouane the new Thaghazout ; soon, the modernity of this place will make everyone forget what it used to be.
But one thing is sure, all those who went to Imsouane, the real Imsouane, will remember it.
Yes; the taghazout of years passed has already left my memory :(
A great describtion mate. I think i will never visit imesouan again cuz i can't not bare seeing all these great memories gone for good😢
The big problem is that they should have Not allowed them to build those houses or cafés at the beguining since it s not legal ! This concerns many areas in all Morocco !
Thanks for the video !
Nip it in the bud
I have a problem with another illegal thing in this country: carriages 🫏🐎
Especially here in Deroua, the caïd (mayor but corrupt and unknown) of the town isn't doing anything about them, and there isn't a police station where I can make a report!
@@SundaeSaurus Why do you want to report carriages in Deroua (wherever that is) to the police ? Are you some kind of male version of Karen? Carriages have existed for generations before you were born...That's not how a complex problem should be resolved. People use carriages because thay have no better alternative. You live in Morocco, you should be less arrogant towards folks with low income.
@@MorAcro Would you please explain what you mean with this expression " Nip it in the bud " ? Thanks
It means stop it before it becomes a larger problem. Referring to the bud of a plant which can grow much larger, nip means to remove.
Heartbreaking. Imsouane you will be missed. A reminder to appreciate what you have in the moment because the next day it could be stripped away. All my love to the ones who lost their home and have to start all over again.
Always stay grateful
Thanks for the video man, hope we see more updates about the situation from you in the future/
Sure thing!
The world cup is coming up in 2030 and Morocco will have to accomodate millions of visitors, and provide them with services similar or better than what they are used to. Nostalgia can be heavy, but I am sure that the residents will be relocated within the village and provided proper and safer housing. The ocean will always remain Imssouane's main source of income. I am glad I saw it in its organic shape.
Yes me too, curious to see what comes señor Wilson
nothing to do with the world cup nobody gonna play here
Wow that coffee shop was really nice looking that's a bummer
It sure is
Sometimes you have to destroy to be able to rebuild. I hope it’s for the good of a regular people of Morocco 🇲🇦 and not just for the rich people. Good job guys.
Hope so too!
End of an era, begining for other, hoping for the best.
I have to admit that it is sad to watch .. but i think is important also to get things in order.
I am curious what the future holds.
Hello Mor Accro
I appreciate your sympathy for the locals, but Imessouane is no longer a wild fishing village. Things have changed, and authorities can no longer close their eyes on the fact that some people there were taking possession of things that do not belong to them and making money out of it. I am sure the village, in a short time, will be reborn into a more attractive worldwide surfing spot with all necessary amenities and adequate infrastructure. Patience, things will change for the better .
Say hello to Andrea and a kiss for princess Rummy
I agree with you
not everyone is taking possession over things that do not belong to them , and the authorities has not folded their eyes while giving authorizations for residents to construct houses and institute surf shops !! and , do you seriously think Imsouane will change for better ? look at Taghazout , did it change for better , not at all .. massive luxury hotels for big rich dumb ass people ,all this investors want is gaining more money , the poor get poorer and vise versa ..rather than this capitalist way of thinkig , why not making Imsouane better by rebuilding surf shops for locals ,fix the impoverished infrastructure and keeping the beautiful charm of this beautiful village ??!!
frankly , i really have sympathy for you being so ignorant about the sad reality and spelling none sense .

That's why you shouldn't but a house without getting the official ownership document of the house, all those houses do not have it.
I was in Imsouane in 1998 and 2003 I stayed each time for 2 months, October November, perfect waves I lived with the locals because there was no guesthouse.
No electricity in the streets. No restaurants, it was a fishing village.
There was only one local surfer. We surfed Cathedral and the Bay like crazy. It was Magic
That sounds amazing! Things sure changed in 20 years…
OMG we were there one day before Christmas and less than a Month Imsouane is already like that?! So its shocking and sad to seeing that 🥲. That coffee we visited with that beautiful view is gone f****k
Things change quick!
So sad to see the destruction of Imsouane 😢 my partner and I are arriving in Morocco mid-November, to spend a couple of days in Imsouane then moving on to Taghazout as my partner wants to do some surfing.
Can you tell me if all the surf shops/restaurants have closed? Is it still worth us visiting Imsouane or not?
I think it is still a good visit if you are a surfer
I think the video could have presented the situation a little more sensitively. Researching some background facts would also have been great. Nonetheless, thanks for the video. Over the last few days we have helped clear out the houses and shuttled things to relatives. It was and is heartbreaking. If all this is really necessary, I ask myself: why so? why aren't people given more time to organize their move out? I find the situation to be inhumane.
To the people who wrote there would be people in who make a lot of profit: most houses were owned by „small“ people. Fishermen, families, small guesthouses and restaurants, surfshops… Rich people can easily buy land with papers in Imsouane and did it a lot in the last years. Land prices and house rents have already risen to absurd levels in recent years. How can someone who doesn't come from a wealthy family be able to afford this?
Thanks for the background info! All i had heard was from social media, and people are not happy with this change :/
they had been warned for more than ten years, but no one wanted to leave believing that things will stay just on paper and no one will come and chase them away.
This place need to be clean, safe, and attractive!!!
I think that the entire Moroccan maritime coast along the water is sold to build tourist complexes. Money money money.
In time
ah ur back , welcome back X o xo
I hope there will be no more sewage or trash everywhere where , I don’t mind them cleaning those beaches but at the same time make it accessible to everyone, and environmentally friendly !
Agreed! Keep it clean, keep it zwine!
The buildings are being destroyed because they were built illegally, essentially squatting on public land. The government is just restoring order, as they should. Would this be allowed in Europe or in the US? Of course not.
Agree! Often the buildings are built too close to the beach, not safe and not environment friendly - not connected to official infra and that is leading to using improvised sewage systems, etc. Looks sad but in the end things should be done right- good for local people, tourists and environment!
Thats bullshit. How can people native to the Land build something illegally? Despite that they have high historical and architectural value not only for the natives but for the whole region. You can never rebuild this again.

Last time I was there was 30 years ago. Back then it was a very small fishing village. I recall buying a whole lobster for 50 cents. And then the village grew and now it’s been demolished. I hope the people that moved were compensated properly. I’m planing to go back this summer but I guess I will not be seeing that small village nor buy a lobster for 50 cents
lobster for 50 cents ? does times are long gone, in new Morocco by law every farmer or fishing boat can directly sell to many much richer countries with no taxes, so every body sells to the international, litteraly everything, some times Moroccan fish and fruits are cheaper in Europe than 10km from the farm that produced them or the port where the fish first landed. globalisation is a blessing they said
@@Yanzdorloph I did say, it was 30 years ago. I used to go with 2 of my friends around 6 am and help them get the boats out, in return, they handed us a lot of sardines and some other fish and this one time a lobster for 50 cents. Those were the good old days
Lobster is about 40$ a kilo now…
I have seen a decline in the quality of produce available, and an increase in price. I suspect exportation

Not so much wifi there at the moment…
no enes care soo sad it hurt so mush thanks lot for ur support
Yes, most people seem to see this demolition as a good and necessary thing
it is not finished but sooner we must reconvert all these regions, so that they meet the standards of modern and solid constructions, since independence people have lived in anarchy and informality, everyone does what they want. he wants to build on the land of another person or belonging to the state without any document without respecting the rules of the art, everything must be destroyed and rebuilt on good bases and not pollute the landscape with city cans
So basically remove all the charme and beauty of traditional village that attracted the tourist to begin with and turn it in a bunch of souless hotels you can find anywhere, it is basically the end of imsouane then
@@jonasw3945 There will be small surf villages, but built in a beautiful, ecological way that respects the surrounding nature, such as Dakhla Bay.
@@clasheurindependent9547Sure respecting nature is good, but who is gonna build the village again ? it sure won't be the local berber people that lived there and made that place attractive in the first place, the reason people go there is for the charm of the local population and authenticity of the colorful buildings that were built by the local population for themselves and not just as tourist bait, destorying the authentic buildings and bringing in some big company to build soulless "small surf village" without the authenticity of the people who made that place great in the first place is just bad, I wanted to go to imsouane because of how my friends described it to me as an authentic calm local village with hospitable people and great surf culture, now I'm sure it is just gonna turn into a copy of every other surf place in the world, why would anyone travel all the way over there just to get what they can get anywhere else ? I'm sure some people will but it will be just another forgettable experience and not as memorable as it once was.
If on the other hand, the "small surf villages built in a beautiful, ecological" they want to build is gonna be given to the locals living there with them running the stuff the way it was before then I might stay optimistic and actually it can be better, but if its just going to turn into buildings run by companies where we need to checking into a hotel and paying for overpriced food with artificial swimming pools with only profit in mind then I pass
@@jonasw3945
I really wish that what you said about giving it back to locals would happen, but knowing my Moroccan government, a Big company, probably not even a Moroccan one, will take over this place 😢 and they're gonna turn it to, as you described, a soulless money grabbing spot where people are treated as numbers and credit cards, not as humans.
sorry brother that is your opinion, the reality is that it happens everywhere in Morocco ,with property rights or not , when the regime decides to destroy buildings for their own benefiet ,they just don,t care about anyone this is not a incident it,s going on everywhere a cross the country , this dictator is what keeps Moroccans in the dark for ever , we know the truth behind this sudden activities ,it mainly has a lot to do with Israeli zionist influence on the royal family and corruption by the officials who are involved ,, this is a joke ! thinking that does buildings been build illegally , that,s what they try to sale us each time they violate the basic rights of the people , things getting only worse and worse .be prepared !

The problem is that it will not earn these tourist dollars for Morocco as much as you would like to hope it will. It will earn it for a few select investors who will keep that money mostly for themselves. The imesouane being destroyed was the one that earned tourist money for the actual common man. Yes it was less money than what these resorts will make (in theory), but it allowed these people to have an honest and decent living. Now these same ppl will have to work for slave wages at this new resort.
@@skiliffon predicting the exact economic outcomes of projects like resorts can be challenging, as no one can read a crystal ball. However, it's important to stay optimistic about the potential benefits for local area, Agadir and Morocco. While there may be concerns about the distribution of wealth among investors and the local community, positive impacts on the economy, job creation, and tourism are also possible. In the new Morocco, I trust that there will strict monitoring to ensure fair practices to support both investors and the local workforce for a sustainable and mutually beneficial development. Take a look at Football: it used to be chaotic. Now, with with world class management, it's soaring and winning Morocco a lot of $$$ , praise and respect
I think a lot of surfers loved the current one

I'll tell you for what,; first of all, these people are building random constructions on the public domain. They do not own the land, nor do they have the right to build shacks for hippies on prime coastline locations. Morocco wants to build real and beautiful investments in these regions, such as hotels, profitable businesses that will offer people decent jobs at good wages and give them a respectable living. Morocco wants to attract real tourists and real investments. Now, let me ask you a question ... can you as an American go to San Diego (La Jolla Cove) and build a house or a hut on the federal land (the beach)??? The answer is no way!!!!!.So, don't go there and feed people your bullshit. The Kingdom of Morocco wants to advance, progress and be able to compete with the tourism of Greece, Spain, Italy and so on ...,not to stay as a hub for a few scroungers and profiteers.
yeah sure keep saying that when it's privatised to some foreign investors and bye bye local tourism
What is a real tourist?
