    Hi Paul, Frank here with Gr'Ah Sea Us, Sea Ray 340 Sundancer 2001 from Ottawa: I run my genny at least once a week for a couple of hours because I have to, but I now use your recent recommendation to reassure my wife that it's best to use the genny rather than let it sit. By the way, my genny used to work fine until last week when it uncharacteristically started to "hummm" up and down non-stop instead of its beautiful steady hummm when it runs. I happen to go for a swim and I noticed that the swim platform was a few inches lower on the port side where the (full) black water tank and the heavy 15 hp mercruiser on the dinghy reside. I emptied the full waste tank and immediately the genny worked fine: I think it might have been the genny's carb floats that were off-balance due to the boat's off-weight distribution. The swim platform is now almost level (but not quite because of the outboard on one side and dinghy load). Maybe the off-level was the issue?
    Also and while on vacation, of course lol, and to your point about having tie wraps aboard... I was laughing that you were right about that and I could hear your voice from your "What Tools + Spare Parts" video: So there was a fissure the thickness and width of a fingernail that developed on the genny's muffler side (though it made no extra noise from it) where water was shooting almost like a water hose in the bilge while I was on vacation on the Rideau Canal in July 2023. I got my tie wraps, tied them together to make them longer to be able to surround the round muffler and I pressed an extra rubber band that I had (which is used to seal battery wires at the terminal) against the muffler and "voila", no more leaks, vacation saved (or made better). I need to replace the muffler soon. Just wanted to share that story and a cheers to tie wraps my friend, thanks :)

      That's an excellent story - and a pretty cool MacGyver solution!! Didn't I tell you that ya can't have too many zip ties? 😂
      When you're replacing the muffler, look at possibly adding an additional auxiliary muffler as well. Really knocked down the sound on our current Sundancer, and the last one, and the 400 Sedan Bridge 👍

So I pass that hug on to you... virtually! 😅Looking up the additional auxiliary muffler video now, thanks for that tip.

    Hello Paul!, wd love ur videos! We have a 29 ft 2015 Chapperal Cruiser that we bought in Feb2023. The generator worked at the BoatSurvey inspection day but not really when we brought the boat home, so we called a boat generator mechanic who came out three times to replace the impeller bc it dried up (FL Summers) one time was just after 45 days!.Frustrating!! He said to get water in it regularly, so we started running it EVERY 30 days. The generator guy said, you dont even have to run it long, just briefly to get water in .(And close the seacocks after use!). Since the last time he came out(last Summer), it works great! Will be using it more, longer, this Summer. That’s our experience w/ the generator. Very true, use it or lose it! We love our boat!! Spent the night on it last weekend (2nd time) on St John’River- was a fun experience! Tree frogs sing 🎶 loudly after dusk-what a performance! . 🐸

      Hello!! Glad you got it figured out, but I'd strongly suggest that not only run it regularly, but run it with a load on it. As I mentioned in this video, the previous owner had to spend a lot of money to have the alternator side rebuilt due to lack of use.

  • @eternitysshore

    I'll add my 2 cents that 100% supports your conclusions. First, the previous owners of our boat ALSO spent several thousand dollars trying to repair their little used Westerbeke generator in preparation for selling their boat, including getting the thing removed from the boat etc. In the end the could not, and agreed to provide a new one to us as their expense. We ended up with a brand new diesel powered Next Gen UCM2-5.5...which retails for over $10,500. Moral of their story, RUN YOUR GENERATOR. So we run ours every other time out on the boat (which for us is about once a week) for at least 30 minutes with at least a small load i.e. battery charger and microwave or stove for making a lunch or snack. For anyone in the market for a brand new generator, we love ours and it's crazy more fuel efficient than we thought it would be. It's been run about 38 hours over 1+ season and 80% of the time it's running the AC and yet it has only burned about 7 gallons of diesel.

      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  Год назад +1

    Many people automatically assume low hours on an older gen set is good but as Boogaboo states, it's not. It's also good to put a load on it (running appliances off of the ten set) as it was designed to do.
    Also, since these generators are carbureted, there are o-rings and seals within the carburetor that can been destroyed by the ethanol in gas. It is imperative to put something like Stabil 360 in the gas tank that feeds the generator (its good to use in general as well) which neutralizes ethanol.
    When winterizing, run your gen set out of gas by disconnecting the electric fuel pump! This is great way to save your carburetor by keeping the bowl empty so ethanol and sitting fuel cannot ruin anything within by sitting all winter. These are great ways to avoid thousands in repairs so you don't have to Bust Out Another Thousand (BOAT).

    The diesel generator on the boat i bought a year ago, hadn't been run in over 6 years. Wouldn't start, because the rings wouldn't seat. The valve faces were worn down oast the first layer of metal. Many, many hours on this generator. Hour meter only showed 1200 hours. • @BoatingWithBoogaboo

      Squeals, you say? First thought that comes to mind is either a bad belt, or quite likely the water pump. I had to replace the water pumps on both our last 330 Sundancer (4.5 kW Westerbeke), as well as our current 370 Sundancer (7.2 kW Westerbeke).
      If you think that's the culprit, do yourselves a big favour and don't waste your time trying to rebuild the pump. I tried that on the last boat, but it only lasted a year or so before I bought a brand new, complete pump through Westerbeke. They're not cheap, but IMO,well worth it.

Now to replace the 150 amp breaker that keeps overheating and tripping and take out the entire head system….pump, black tank and all. Toilet already in the dumpster. Lol Chasing down the infamous sulfur smell in the boat is driving me nuts!! Can’t find the source. Putting a compost in so no more pump outs or duck valve failure. On our gas Westerbeke that Preheat switch is actually a by-pass for the oil pressure warning. I usually have to hold it down (with the start button) for roughly 5-10 seconds when starting to let oil pressure build while the engine cranks over. Otherwise, the oil sender will see low pressure and not allow the engine to start.
