Actually abed is a smoker in the other episode where britta pays for his film classes he pulls out a pack and puts one in his mouth at the end of the episode
He plays the role, but he doesn't actually smoke. A key factor in his character is that he dislikes having his brain's chemistry changed which is why he does not take any mind altering substances, including cigarettes. He always has just the right items on hand to do things because he can predict when they will be needed with frightening accuracy, but the only time he will ever USE them as intended is if he needs to (like binge drinking with Jeff).
That episode was about everybody sinking to their worst in an environment that was actively turning them into what they disliked about themselves.
