Sri Harmandir Sahib's first head granthi, Baba Budha Ji, is being commemorated today with great reverence and devotion. On this sacred occasion, a large number of devotees have gathered at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), offering their prayers, bowing before the Guru, listening to kirtan, and performing ardas (prayer) for the well-being of all. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire Sikh community on the occasion of Baba Budha Ji's birthday. Baba Budha Ji, a pivotal figure in Sikh history, was born in the village of Kathu Nangal in Amritsar, where a gurdwara now stands at his birthplace.
Baba Budha Ji holds a special place in Sikhism, not only for his unparalleled devotion but for the essential role he played in the early years of the Sikh faith. He was born in 1506 to Baba Sukh Randhawa and Mata Gauran in the village of Kathu Nangal. His spiritual journey began at a young age when he encountered Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, and became one of his most dedicated disciples. Baba Budha Ji's deep understanding of Sikh teachings, humility, and wisdom earned him the highest respect among Sikhs.
Baba Budha Ji's legacy is vast. He served as a spiritual guide and mentor to six Sikh Gurus, from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Hargobind Ji. His most notable contribution was his service as the first head granthi (caretaker) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Sri Harmandir Sahib. It was under the guidance of Guru Arjan Dev Ji that Baba Budha Ji was entrusted with the great honor of ceremoniously installing the Guru Granth Sahib at the newly completed Harmandir Sahib in 1604.
Throughout his life, Baba Budha Ji remained a pillar of strength and spirituality within the Sikh community. He is remembered for his tireless service, humility, and wisdom. His contributions helped shape the early Sikh community and strengthened the foundation of Sikhism, especially through challenging times, such as when Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred, and during the early formation of the Sikh military under Guru Hargobind Ji.
Baba Budha Ji also played a key role in the preparation and guidance of Guru Hargobind Ji, who was to become the first Sikh Guru to adopt the concept of Miri-Piri (temporal and spiritual authority). His wisdom and insight were instrumental in the creation of the Sikh tradition of balancing spirituality with a commitment to justice and defense of righteousness.
On this auspicious day, devotees at Sri Harmandir Sahib are paying their respects to Baba Budha Ji, reflecting on his immense contributions to the Sikh faith. The granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib also shared a message encouraging all Sikhs to walk on the path shown by Baba Budha Ji, remain connected to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, and live a life of humility, service, and dedication to the greater good.
Baba Budha Ji’s life is a testament to unwavering faith, spiritual wisdom, and selfless service, making him one of the most respected and beloved figures in Sikh history. His legacy continues to inspire millions of Sikhs around the world.
