Same here man, except I just graduated college. First time ever at something like that and The Cheese took me to another level. There was some pretty good magic there for sure.
Seems like the mouvment of the ocean at Pary Beach camp in 2012, near Denmark. Share the same incredible place. French man spend 2 months with good Friends close to Fremantle 🏁✌️🙏✨
I'm on an oil rig in the North Atlantic at my desk with my earphones on watching this and my heart is pounding and my eyes are welling up with joy. This is sublime.
Amazing piece, John played Ocean so many times after this one, but I always keep coming back to this one, This is by far the best 'Ocean' version.. amazing feeling
You don't play ocean, ocean plays you. Every performance is different and has its own character, that's what makes it so incredibly unique from others songs
The best part of an acoustic journey, is that you can create your own story along with it. That is why music is the greatest gift you can give someone besides your heart. I’m not the most emotional person, but this has brought me to tears as it’s brought out such raw emotion in me, taking me back to moments of pure bliss in my life, moments that are now gone forever and while life doesn’t always go how we planned, we always have music that can take us back to that time
Damn i remember watching this on RUclips years agoo. Probably atleast 10 yrs and was blown away and wished i was at rothbury, and now its 2024 and im still blown the fuck away. This was when JB was seriously so hungry
I have been listening to different versions of Ocean for the last hour. Fuck, I love this man and his musical brilliance. Out of all the versions I've watched though, this, at 7:23, when he looks up and out at the crowd, and just takes it all in, and he just smiles. Beautiful!
Mike Maniacco ugh!!!!i know you posted this 4 years ago and will probably never see this but damn, I was just thinking the same thing. He had this, oh man, this is awesome moment. Amazing feeling.
Literally one of the most defining moments in my life when my friend told me about this song. No matter if your sad or angry, close your eyes and just listen as everything just fades away. That's what this song does for me! Music is a powerful tool that can bring people together and with all the hate that is in our society today, everyone should just listen and love.
Jeremy absofuckinglutely 100% this acoustic brilliance has gotten me through so much emotional stuff. Failed marriage to now just bliss. Sad, angry and pure joy it’s my go too. Flip over to his wife’s music Mama Kin she is amazing too 😍😍
I remember going to Rothbury in 2009. There were so many good bands/artists. Sherwood Forest was incredible at night. I saw hippies dancing naked on acid. It was great.
This hit the reddit front page about 11 years ago and I heard it for the first time. Since then I have seen him play 5-6 times and he never dissapoints. He even played one time in my tiny hometown of wilmington nc for a bunch of very enthusiatic fans in a little outdoor ampitheater. For whatever reason the youtube algorithm decided I needed to hear this song again today and yes its as amazing as the first time I heard it!
Saw them a few years back at Wolf Trap here in Va. No lie when he started playing this , the sky opened up , rain just flowing. Probably the most magical thing i have ever seen ❤ Got to meet them afterwards , one of the best days of my life ❤
A legend. Love this man. His music and his message. This song is an emotional journey every time. If you can feel something from music or a song that says something right there. PEACE.
I was searching for media to post and share in light of all the lies and deception going on here on earth. And it dawned on me to it's been so long since iv heard this jam. It brings tears to my eyes having been in that crowd twelve years ago with my buddy Alex that took his life a few years back, man I miss him . Peace be with you brothers and sisters
You Play fucken Great Music Brother. Your Straming is Perfect Bro. Your a fucken Good Artist. Thank You. People need this kind of sound. Cheers from South-Africa.
I would probably be just static, not being able to move, watching him without even blinking. Every time i listen to any version of Ocean i just get overwhelmed by this feelings he lets out through the guitar, it's just amazing. I can't express how much it would move me to watch him play live in front of me.
I had never heard of John Butler before, heard it on the path just after venue admission...went running. This is the shit you stumbled upon at Rothbury 2009. Probably the best festival of my generation, certainly my favorite with undeniably the best lineup
that guy at 8:13 wearing blue was 100% one with the song. he was possessed, taken over by this indescribable incredible music. He's my emotion come to life when listening to this song.
Everything about this is fucking awesome! This crowd knew how fucking awesome this performance was and that made it even better. Synergy of music at its pinnacle.
fantastic piece of music.........the 6 people who gave it a thumbs down could you please post a link so we can watch your 11 mins of acoustic brilliance
because the story cannot be told several times in the same way, each time depending on the mood, environment, everything, the mood of the music changes and this is very cool
if you learn any instrument it should be in such a way that you know the instrument inch by inch. John butler and this guitar piece of his, literally blew my consciousness. hands down to him
I was up front and hearing this on that day changed me
Defining moment of my life. Fourth of July, just graduated high school and my first music festival. Think about this day all the time.
Same here man, except I just graduated college. First time ever at something like that and The Cheese took me to another level. There was some pretty good magic there for sure.
Cheese, Greatful Dead, Wille, etc...etc... 4 days of awesomeness... The forest was the best
Sounds like a good day! 😎
dude, I ALWAYS think about this festival...it was so so special and nothing will ever be able to touch it!

I do keep coming back to this video to find peace in times of trouble.
I'm on an oil rig in the North Atlantic at my desk with my earphones on watching this and my heart is pounding and my eyes are welling up with joy. This is sublime.
Pete L Hope you're doing well out there, buddy. Keep safe
Done me the same way
Ocean is around you
Pencil pusher, eh?
:)
I lost my mom 10 years ago and this song gets me every time. I listen to this song almost everyday. Mom would have loved it
right with ya brother. shes jamming with you up in heaven
@Joe Ken90 I appreciate that man!
Mate, I'm feeling that too. I'd love to play this song to my mum and cry happiness tears together.
I’m sure she would have and I’m sure she’s looking down on you somewhere proud x
This moves me every time.
It could only be called Ocean. It’s that deep and it’s that wide. It really is epic in every way. I need to lay down!
Saw this live. I watch this a couple times a year. Brings tears every time I watch.... KILLER
Amazing piece, John played Ocean so many times after this one, but I always keep coming back to this one, This is by far the best 'Ocean' version.. amazing feeling
Agreed. "but have you heard the 09 rothbury?"
Same, this is my favorite version as well
You don't play ocean, ocean plays you. Every performance is different and has its own character, that's what makes it so incredibly unique from others songs
Yes, this rendition was special. He looked up and smiled at the audience because this was all of him.
John is highly under rated. Saw him live in Michigan. Awesome energy.
songs can imitate feelings and lyrics can try to define them, but this is just raw emotions coming out of that guitar!
Truth
this is not a music, this is a story !
yabigo
And 5 years later the story lives on.

Young John ❤ always a master
Damn i remember watching this on RUclips years agoo. Probably atleast 10 yrs and was blown away and wished i was at rothbury, and now its 2024 and im still blown the fuck away. This was when JB was seriously so hungry
Still listening in 2021.. So fresh.. Evergreen...

Dan Devlin Project yeah for sure it was amazing
This was my VERY first time seeing JB ever play...changed my life forever! What an amazing performance, what an amazing festival...long live Rothbury!
Those muted strums at the end are so powerful. They give me goosebumps every time

This wonderful song guided me through some of the hardest and most challenging years of my life. Still makes me feel the same way 13 years later.
best version of ocean imo
My favorite version of "Ocean" .. Thank you john!!
Tells a story through that guitar!! Unbelievable talent
This is probably my favorite version! :D
I could listen to the sound of his guitar over and over again, this is pure gold.
this is his best live performance of ocean by far...LOVE IT!!!!
Still here in 2019. One of the best music moment ever. Thank you John

This has got me through a lot. You have no clue.
15 years ago... wow
He is channeling heaven
Every other year I remember this video and come back to it to relive it like the first time I saw it. Absolutely incredible song and performance.
I’ve watched one Ocean version and now RUclips is telling me that I have to watch them all
And you probably will. LOL
it might not be as polished as later versions, but it is the most heartfelt
It's amazing being able to come back to these older videos and watch the growth of JB and Ocean together 😊
I like how the fans in the crowd who aren't John butler fans are equally amazed and awes by the sheer talent
I was searching for media to post and share in light of all the lies and deception going on here on earth. And it dawned on me to it's been so long since iv heard this jam. Cheers from South-Africa.
I love this song... I imagine to be in the midle of some sea hearing the sound of the water.... beautiful! !!
How to have an audience in the palm of your hand!
without a doubt one of the best guitar players ive ever heard.
10 yıldan fazla süre önce dinlediğim zaman bana umut veren bu parça hala yüreğimi ferahlatmak için işe yarıyor. Her gecenin bir sabahı var
8:14. Guy in the blue shirt rocking the hat and shades...That reaction is everything amazing about music. Dude is absolutely losing it
I definitly would look like him in front off this song live (actually I had seen the "previous" vesion live wich was way shorter)
I would probably be just static, not being able to move, watching him without even blinking. Every time i listen to any version of Ocean i just get overwhelmed by this feelings he lets out through the guitar, it's just amazing. I can't express how much it would move me to watch him play live in front of me.
i would probably be dancing and almost crying
+Darrin Joos
The power of music....
Darrin Joos That was me believe it or not.
Just found this video for the first time and oh my what a show this was to be at.
I had never heard of John Butler before, heard it on the path just after venue admission...went running.
This is the shit you stumbled upon at Rothbury 2009. Probably the best festival of my generation, certainly my favorite with undeniably the best lineup
This is probably the best version so of this song on RUclips.
Hands down. Best version. Live. Raw. Real.
This performance of Ocean is far and away the best live version imho. A truly fantastic and gifted musician.
that guy at 8:13 wearing blue was 100% one with the song. he was possessed, taken over by this indescribable incredible music. He's my emotion come to life when listening to this song.
Can’t describe how much I love this guitar work. So much passion, love and skill

Fantastic.
yep still the best and I've seen him heaps of times
this is my favorite of all time
that is the classic piece of solo i've ever heard..The track is beautfully divided into four parts and each one is beautiful than the other.
Such a beautiful song!
So many emotions :')
Absolutely amazing song... if you listen to different live versions of it, he improvises differently every time and the feel..... oh the feel..
Grace, flow, awesomness. The real awe.
Esto es lo mejor que e visto en mi maldita vida.
'Cliffs of Dover' said "sup" and 'Ocean' said "hold my beer". Incredible.
Damn, that's incredible!
Nice one, I love it.
fantastic piece of music.........the 6 people who gave it a thumbs down could you please post a link so we can watch your 11 mins of acoustic brilliance
trolls.
Amazing to hear how the song has morphed and progressed over time. Quite a bit different than how he plays it today. Such an awesome song.
because the story cannot be told several times in the same way, each time depending on the mood, environment, everything, the mood of the music changes and this is very cool
the feeling @7:20 "I take you all with me."
What do u mean?
every live performance of this I've watched seems as if John's not even aware of an audience. He's so wrapped up in the music he's feeling.
so much power in this song.. thank you , so much !
2021 & it still lives on
I have watched this more than 100x......js
Watching this gives me the urge to play my guitar.
what incredible depth
and at the same time height
let me always wave just as this song
with all its might
if you learn any instrument it should be in such a way that you know the instrument inch by inch. John butler and this guitar piece of his, literally blew my consciousness. hands down to him
