    Electronic alternatives to acoustic instruments have a rocky history of success, and while decades of technological refinement have led to convincing alternatives and new ways of approaching sound, drums may be one of the most divisive. Whether it’s about form, function, or both, eDrums are as fervently championed as they are vehemently derided, yet DW saw a unique opportunity to apply their half-century of world-class expertise to devise a groundbreaking solution: DWe drums. Marking their first foray into the world of electrified rhythm, DWe drums offer an unprecedented proposition of acoustic-electric excellence, blending the physical and musical elements of acoustic shells with cutting-edge electronic control and versatility. Could it really be done? We asked our resident professor of percussion, NDV, to take the DWe drums for a spin to find out if they can truly bridge these two rhythmic worlds. Check it out!

      I’m wondering if it possible to produce 2 sounds simultaneously. I mean cross-stick and head/rim click sound. Still not clear. Usually, with electrical drums one sound mutes the other, making impossible to play jazz kind of stuff in the right way.

      played one in Forks and the mesh heads are as you’d expect, think Remo silentstroke. The cymbals are definitely louder than traditional rubber pads but not completely unbearable. Thanks to DW and Roland technology for the development of interesting tools for a percussionist with a new concept. We have been imagining many years of disassociating electronic and acoustic drums. Triggers with a sound controller and acoustic drums are not new. What's new is this wireless system. The software. The playability. It gives you more choices at your drumsticks. Innovation since its inception DW and Roland have hit the sweet spot.

    Man…I’ve had this DWe set for yearsssssssssss! 😂 I converted my exotic collectors series kit into an E kit and played with 2Box and Pearl Mimic pro drum modules with Jobeky metal cymbals all around. Good stuff man! The wireless is a game changer no doubt. It’ll take 5 years or so to drop in price, but this is amazing stuff right here man. And the fact that it has round robin nice sounding drum samples with multiple velocities with no machine gunning snares etc…is fantastic.

    • @JoseMTamez
      @JoseMTamez 5 месяцев назад

      So you have tried or used the software? What is round robin? Really, I've never heard of that before but I'll probably google it faster then getting a response to this question.

    • @gregthegroove
      @gregthegroove 5 месяцев назад

      @@JoseMTamez the 2Box module and Pearl mimic pro modules have their software built in. The mimic pro actually uses SS5 slate digital drums. I’ve used Evil drums VST software on my Mac and that was fantastic too. Quite the learning curve. “Round robin” is a term used to describe drum samples that are recorded multiple times at different velocities when hit by the stick, there’s upwards of 250 samples of high quality drum samples so when you hit the drum, it doesn’t play the same drum sample 2,3 times in a row. That’s what causes machine gunning snares where it doesn’t sound natural. When you hit a soft hit, it will play a real life soft hit when it was recorded. Back 20 years ago, they’d use one sample over and over and just lower the volume of the samples for “soft hits”. Round robin describes the smoothness of the drum samples. Not cheap sounding same snare sound over and over.

    PROS: Easily a "convertible drum set." • Same sounds in all environments(with minor ambience adjustments). • Perform at full velocity in any situation. • FSR sensors DO make a great difference in feel with pressure(muting heads/pushing IN on heads). CONS: MUST have computer to run in all digital situations. • Have to rely on that computer for "stability." • Have to have the means to send all individual channels to FOH sound if he/she wants control out-front...and THEY ALWAYS DO! ;) • Batteries! • Triggers DO go bad. • Heavy hitters will realize that it DOES TAKE FINESSE to get these drums to respond correctly! • Snare drum and Cymbals STILL don't seem perfect...and most-likely never will. BONUS: The EASE of removing/installing the innards! WOW!

The snare throw off is awesome, but honestly it just doesn’t feel good to play on and for a VST, it sounds alright but not great. EFNOTE is eating DWe’s lunch by actually doing things different. Roland buying DW, buying Versatrigger, using Field Cymbals sounds like it’s radical but it’s not. It’s just corporatism and a ton of resources to get it into the market. This is my very first E-kit, I’ve been an acoustic drummer for over 40 years. I needed something quieter, as my neighbors hate me 😜 Plus I want to be able to record at home without buying a bunch of microphones. I was eyeballing the Alesis Strike Pro SE for over a year until I saw this video that Nick/Sweetwater put out. No cords? for an E kit? That’s why I was 50/50 on the Alesis and having a bunch of cables

    This is great stuff for electronic drums as a whole. Roland is definitely taking notes on this one, so cheers to DW for pushing the envelope, as always.
    Now, it would've been great if they came with a separate pair of hoops that you can put on your drumheads and replace the entire hoop with a pre-tuned drumhead that you can just swap with the mesh instead of having to remove all the lugs and tune the drums each time you want to go acoustic. Other than that, looks pretty good!

    Did you use Luna because of the low-latency you get from UAD hardware? Still haven’t seen any extensive testing on how this VST would perform in large record sessions

    I might have missed it, but I didn't see anything related to tuning? Do we tune the toms for example the way we do, or we do it through software?

    @sweetwater is there a package available that only allows me to buy the triggers inside, and I can place on my own dw acoustic shells? Also, the dwe cymbals with the processor? Is that a possibility? If so, would you please be able to provide a link? Thanks!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  6 месяцев назад

      Hey, tomeleefan. The triggers themselves are not available as of yet. And the cymbals will need the drum link hub by DW which is currently only available when you purchase the kit.
      I hope this helps.

    Love the technology. It'd be nice to see and learn how we can use this with other drum modules. In live a situation, I'd want to use individual drum, overhead, and direct outs to the FOH, not just Left/Right. So would love to know how to use it with the TD50X or other modules. Or, can we use other hardware for direct outs?

    I’m using the TD50x, DW Performance series kit with mesh heads, Roland triggers on every head, three Roland bar triggers and Field Cymbals. Lots of cables! I do run the outs on the TD50x to a DI and then to a snake for the sound tech. These Roland cymbals seem to be copies of the Field cymbals.

      @pistolpeteOH 8 месяцев назад

      True. The DI addition to the rack I use with the TD50x is more for the venue sound tech. It was his suggestion. He can easily hook up the snake to his on the stage and we’re ready in a few minutes.

    Very impressed with the DWe kit! I'm curious on how intricate the cymbals are. Can you make swells or do light cymbal work? Also, is this kit and/or the DW software compatible with Superior Drummer 3?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  7 месяцев назад

      Hello, Bradley! The cymbals on the DWe are dynamic and responsive. Like any other e-drum kit, you will need to spend some time getting the velocity curves dialed in to your playing style. More on this here:
      ruclips.net/video/_pAR2LDh7fA/видео.html
      This kit does still output MIDI data, so it can indeed integrate with third party drum VSTs.
      Thanks for the interest!

  • @frederickgardiner7771
    @frederickgardiner7771 7 месяцев назад

    Great piece of hardware. Question, how do you present individual channels to a digital console for FOH? I mean once the drummer is happy with what's coming out of the DW software, the live mixing engineer may want the individual channels to remix for FOH. I only see a left/right output from audio interface.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey there! With the new DWe kits, they only provide a stereo output on the DW module itself. If you’re wanting to send a multi-track mix to FOH, you’ll want to use a separate audio interface to run out of the computer. With this, you’ll be able to access individual tracks within the DW software and send those out to the PA.
      Feel free to reach out with any other questions!

    of course it is a genus invention. And if it works right under live situation it is probably the future of electronic drums! BUT, i don't need a giant acoustic high end drum set for about 6 K to play electronic, i NEED to save space on smaller stages. So, hopefully, they offer it with the DW frequent flyer, or sell just the electronic to built it in an existing small drum set. Then i would buy it!
