I have a carefully curated set of 70 of my favourite watercolours in pans. In this set I have quite a few Daniel Smith, Qor, M Graham and a few Holbein. Out of the 70, 35 are Roman Szmal. I absolutely adore them. They also have some beautiful granulating colours and “self evolving” colours as well. What are self evolving watercolors?
@@ArtandDiamondsWithEskies self evolving watercolours generally show more than one colour as they dry and separate. Super Vision are kind of like that, but my all time favourite are from Rockwell paints in Canada. I’m in Australia so the shipping cost almost as much as the paints themselves but they are stunning and worth every penny! I encourage you to look them up 😊
Thank yo Kristy, you have freed me to be able to truly just enjoy my paints. Why, you ask? Because, being completely self taught, I’ve ALWAYS wondered WHY we are supposed to “mix” a green when I have a entire pallet with several greens and blue greens? Why can’t I just use the tones that appeal to me and put down the color that I want?
You are the FIRST watercolor artist who has said “ not really into mixing colors”! If I didn’t already love you before( I did) I’d sure love you now!! I think you have done a HUGE service to these pigments, as you do all, when you swatch and show what these colors really can do. Team replay 😊. I was actually on that artist’s website last night and the information she provides is absolutely amazing and thorough. To my understanding the reason RS mixes are more light fast from other brands ( I.e. Moonglow) is because RS uses single pigment paints to create the mixtures…she even provides the recipes. To be able to get the core colors and then create the convenience colors from what you have is exciting to me.
Never ordered from Jackson’s before but I think I am going to have to take the plunge….because I am a firm believer that one can never have enough watercolors 😅

I love my Roman paints! I added Prussian blue to my collection, because it’s sublime, and now I HAVE to have some of that Cherry Quin! I’m a sucker for a pretty coral. 😊
I knew it, I'm not the only person that feels as crazy in love with these paints. They are the most luminous, loveliness I've ever experienced.
I just wanted to mention that most of the “Aquarius named paints” have a cool two color separation and it’s beautiful!! At least to me it is! I just pick a handful of full pans at a time and it’s very affordable that way!!

Thanks Kristy! Anyone can smear paint on paper. You gave me a sense of direction. I have only dabbled in the past and not very well. I do so many things. I'm trying to settle down and learn how to do a few things very well. You speak to me. I love the Joy. I feel it even when I don't like what is coming out on my paper. In a few sessions, I'm finding the results are getting better and each session is more satisfying. I love when you show what you're doing with what brush. It's SO helpful. I am such a visual learner. I love RS paints. It is the only paint set that I will buy in pans, even if them offer tubes. So much personality!

I discovered the sale a few days ago & have always wanted to try these, so I invested in some half pans to make a dedicated portrait set to experiment with my growing interest of portraiture
I have just about every brand, not exaggerating, also not proud of spending my retirement on paint.BUT, if I got Roman S first, I wouldn’t need anything else… my fave
I luv luv these creamy and beautiful colors easy to manipulate
I've done a couple of monochromes in Prizz-Bizz grey, and it worked really well. It showed much more pink than yours, so it probably something really simple but hard to spot making our colours different 😆
My favourite Roman Szmal colour sounds dull but it isn't! It's Van Dyke Brown. Roman Szmal is one of only 3 companies in the world that makes a real, natural Van Dyke Brown watercolour, and I adore it! (Most modern VDB are hues, because the traditional colour is prone to fading, though Kim Crick has tested the traditional ones and they don't seem too bad)
I also love French Ultramarine, Ultramarine Violet, Natural Sienna Monte Amiata, and Terra Pozuoli.
And Indigo! Also Earth Green, despite it's low tinting strength. Sometimes it's just the right green.
Their PB 11 black is the most granulatingest granulating paint I've ever seen. Great for adding texture to stone by mixing it into other colours.

Thanks for this; sorry to be a little late! Roman Szmal watercolors are my fave. Cobalt Sea Blue, Ocean Blue, Dark Ochre, Mineral Violet, Sap Green Light, and Scarlet Red are among my favorites! I just got the urban sketchers palette over the holidays and love it. I missed that you asked about how we store or organize our swatching; I have a clear hard plastic folder/case from Daiso that i keep my loose swatch sheets in; each sheet is labeled by brand, color and pigment so i can review easily when needed or just stare at their beauty.
Gotta say, im loving the side-braid; very pretty!

I love the Roman Szmal paints I adore misty morning, minerals violet, ocean blue, shadow violet, and autumn green. I want to get more greens though.
You asked about how people store their swatches. I have two binders, one is baseball card size and I've made a swatch card for it that allows for Brand, color name, pigment numbers, transparency, light fastness, granulation, lift ability and four levels of value. They are placed in the binder by brand. The second binder holds business card size and holds all the same information on a smaller scale card and are categorized by color. It is a labor of love but has been very helpful when I paint as in (i.e.) if I want to choose a blue, I go to the "by color" binder and choose what blue I want to use. If I want to see if I have a particular color in a particular brand I go to the "by brand" binder to check before I buy so I don't end up with doubles. So far that has worked out well. In addition, it gives me a chance to "get the feel" for the paints and practice with them before actually painting with them.
Sadly I just checked to see if the company would ship to Hawaii & its apparently a no go so I'll have to have someone on the mainland accept it & forward them to me.
I was on a livestream with Sketches_n_Scrubs and someone in her chat said the grey is pronounced like "Sheh-Bizz". So I'm curious which is the correct pronunciation now.

I make about 85--90% of my own watercolor paint but did breakdown and bout 20 Roman Szmal paints from Jackson's recently to try. Unfortunately they are still sitting in London at the moment. Also bought the Versatil 6 piece travel set to try. Loved your video, enthusiasm and enjoyment with these paints. Makes me think I didn't make a mistake buying them.

I bought some pans for a special project. Love the paint but the pans are difficult to mess with. I bought an empty tin to hold 12 full pans. But the pans will not fit. Is there a special tin I can purchase to hold these paint pans?

Your hair is so cute this way. Just got My RS paints a week or so ago. I love the green earth one, looks so much like a true vintage green. So many of theres are like the true vintage watercolors. They're really affordable, I love Jackson's I've ordered a couple times. I only had two stick and suspect it's because they're newly produced and will dry out more with time. I pulled up some of the cover and let it dry then pulled more up. Funny, I bought a lot of the greens and now will be buying some of the red tones you bought.

Good thing that those will be coming in tubes! I prefer tubes, and I was already asking myself when you started unpacking why they don't because they are wet anyway to begin with.

I only have a couple of colors but O LOVE LOVE LOVE the couple I have. Very granulating. Very beautiful. I plan on getting more when I start running out of colors in my other brands.

They are both beautiful. Roman Szmal (RS) is so much more affordable and such a wide color range. RS doesn't come in tubes so if you prefer tubes, then Isaro. Isaro also has great pearlescent, sparkly and metallic color options.

Just a question about composition . Could putting a flower like the Orange and coral one, In between the 2 taller yellow flowers , Instead of the small yellow one , helped the balance Be more even? I am desperately trying to Composition. Absolutely loved the session. Liked the swatching and painting combined but maybe not quite so long. Thanks For your willingness to put in the long and hard work for us.
Yes really good insight and I think so, but another even smaller placement of orange somewhere would have been needed possibly to further balance the addition :)

Absolutely! Even if they are dried out… which means you’d prob get them super cheap, just wet them and paint!!

I think O ordered from Jackson’s and it was here in a few days. I don’t recall the shipping costs but it wasn’t more than $30 to the best I can recall.

Maybe the person who complained about the brushes was male? They have larger hands than us females and that might have been why they thought the brushes feel a bit fragile … and the brushes from the other company that you showed us could well have been designed by a male (with larger hands)…
Hi Kristy. Love your paint swatch sheets. (Looking at the one with the paint pallet) Since you are still in the design stage, have you thought about putting numbers in front of the paint pans, and then numbers with lines on the right of the page to fill in the names? Just a suggestion for people who may write a little big, so the paint color name will fit. Not a criticism just a suggestion. Keep up the good work. I learn so much from your videos and appreciate all you do to help us newbies.

I followed the link to your brushes. I found the "buy on Amazon" buttons.....one of them brought me to a
'"assorted paint brushes" page, and the other brought me to a page titled "watercolor brushes". Nothing about your brushes, whatsoever. However, when I type in "Kristy Rice brushes", in the Amazon search window, it brings me right to your "Art for joy's sake" brushes.

I get a bit confused with keeping all those watercolors straight. I like a simple limited palette so I have a million different tins with limited palettes!
