There is an air vent shaft located in about the middle of Fairview that leads down to the tunnel. It looks like an old brick castle tower. If I remember correctly its located on the street across from Lincoln School, I think it's Kennedy Drive.
+Dennis Feliciano I checked on Google maps and it is still there between Kennedy and McKinley. Here are the Google map coordinates, zoom in on the big round thing and you should see it pretty good. www.google.com/maps/@40.81439,-73.999151,72m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en
Yes, that light is the end of the tunnel in Fairview, and no, the trains didn't go over to New York City. The track out of the tunnel led to the train yards in Edgewater, and from there, connected to tracks along the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. There were no tracks that led over the Hudson River to New York. I hung out there for years, and I walked through the tunnel countless times with my friends. It was an exciting and fun place to hang out in the 60s and 70s. Every day was an adventure, especially if you were in the tunnel when a train came through.
It was a lot of fun. My friends and I always talk about sneaking down there and walking through one more time before we all die. Thank you for this video. I always loved standing at the entrance of the tunnel and seeing the faraway light from the other side. It's eerie. It always made me want to walk to the other end. I miss those days. I hope I can walk through it again someday.
chuggachuggawoowoo the light in the video isn’t the end. There is a chimney or something in the middle of the tunnel that lets light in from the top. U can’t see the end of the tunnel from either ends.
@@farii202 - I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. The light you see is the other end of the tunnel. Yes, you can see the other end of the tunnel from either side. It’s a straight tunnel that runs from Edgewater to Fairview. I know what I’m talking about. My friends and I practically lived down there. You cannot see the light from the vent from either end. The light from the vent only lights a small area under the vent. The light coming down from the vent is only visible if you are inside the tunnel. I’ve been through it a thousand times.
The brick air vent structure is off McKinley. My sister's friend growing g up in the early 60s lived in a house right next to the air vent for the tunnel. She told me once that she could hear the trains pass by underground in the night.
House I grew up in 380 Kennedy Drive is next to one that has vent in corner of backyard. Going over papers in my mother's estate I saw that there is an easement on the property for the tunnel going under it.
in the old days there was two tracks running through, then when trains got bigger they made it one track. The water would drain out if they cleaned up the two side ditchs that were on the sides of the track ,mainly at the entrance area's .it was always dry in there just the drips but be warbed a boulder could drop any time from the ceiling in there due the water flowing through the rocks inside
It was built by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad in I believe 1892. It was used to transport coal from PA to the Hudson River waterfront docks. Was shut down in the late 60's.
@@kevinlynch1227 they had the plastic pellet cars there into the early 80's before they were mover to westside ave in North Bergen. Not much action but it was open.
I worked for the NYS and W RR and been through and worked in this tunnel once nearly was killed in there when our tool wagon smashed into a bolder that droped from the ceiling in there we were doing about 20 mph ,it goes to edge water yard which is no longer there the oyther end is near or off theside of tunnely ave .
Explore this tunnel back in 2020 with ma buddies but thru the other end of the side, it’s funny to see how people called it hole of hell but never knew about ts till I found about it thru yt, we went there multiple times & thru the abandoned train tracks, we didn’t get to get out to the edgewater side, almost
Went through here 15 times. In the middle is a 20 foot wide airshaft that's in the middle of fairview 2 blocks from day avenue by Lincoln school where I graduated in 2002. Me and by 2 boys popped an m80 in the middle of the tunnel. Can you say sonic boom? Thought we were going to die... anyways it's always fun to go through it. Pitch black and bunch of bats but no ghosts no gouls unfortunately they don't exist. Abyss and total darkness does exist though... places where nobody will ever find you or give a fuck... this is one of those places. And makes me and a few of my friends feel at home.
The tunnel entrance in Edgewater is under a small bridge across from what is now the shopping center known as Edgewater Commons. I’m not sure if the small bridge is still there.
Wow, went there last year and that specific area you’re standing in was full of water waist high, cool beans dude

The last time this tunnel saw any action was back over 50 years ago since afterwards it was abandoned which currently is now.
