I need Alek Wek to come and give us the tea on how they've also fetishized darkskin models in the runway, the make-up artist and hairstylists not knowing how to style or do make-up on black models.
Good on Vogue for shedding light on this. But how many front covers between 2000-2020 featured black models? Just 6 covers - 4 of them being alongside white models. A little rich for Vogue to blame Prada for the Whiteout and race tokenism, when Anna was equally as responsible.
THIS DOC is STELLAR!!! BRAVO for showing this side of the fashion industry. Hoping this brings change ASAP.
I stumbled upon this. Wow 😮 I had that black issue and I loved it so much. I remember I never saw a Spanish girl like me just blonde pail blue eyed distant looking girls. These models and Latina models too like Nieves Alvarez made me so happy. Sessile is so amazing too !!!!
The industry is run by evil rich scumbags, why people who look to the industry and think it somehow represents what the common person thinks or acts is a little strange to me. I'm Italian and get called "white" when as a child not one "white child" called me white, I was a dirty Diego to them in the late 80s, my father is a 2nd generation Italian immigrant, his parents came straight off the boat to elis island & didnt speak a word of English, but somehow I get whatever the supposed whites have gained from, like I did these things. I have 100% empathy, but now a days most refuse to do the same, it becomes a personal trial for each individual & the ethnic background somehow makes someone a victim or benefactor is beyond a ridiculous idea. I have never been given a extra hand, the police still target me, I may not get looked at as being a drug dealer, rather in the city I'm racially profiled as a "possible drug addict" which is just as bad, as I've lived in the inner city for several years & have guns pulled on me for no reason by the police, personally, I've been roughed up, face jammed in the dirt by them, mistreated, but people on TV tell everyone my life is magical. I wonder why people put so much stock in the government, when the government has been the aggressor everyone has hated this whole time, not the person on the street, somehow what a few rich people made, reflects on one whole ethnic group based on their basic skin tone is still the *original definition of race -ism, hating one based strictly off what they look like, (example skin tone, regardless of what color) maybe one needs to focus on the business's themselves instead of what the faces of the marketing scheme. It calls for enlightenment above the savage thinker. Once again, these industries never represented me, nor have I ever benefited from them, only those who own them did that, and these people by individual & personal actions are accountable, remembering that when confronting someone instead of completely buying into the narrative also made & pushed by that very industry, which is what *social media is* they own & made this platform and others, such content made for the design to hate others, based of what *the industry did*
I accidentally clicked this Ad without knowing what it was, but I'm glad my thumb is big.
This video, it's... amazing. I knew there were struggles in the industry, but I had no idea it was so significant. We're not there yet, but we're on our way.
This is so well done. People only see the glamour and need to know the stories behind the scenes. Thank you Vogue!
Just got done looking at the 5th Vogue Black Voices episode and It made me feel relieved and hopeful to becoming a model especially the part when there is more diversity in the fashion industry especially for black models! Thanks Vogue for sponsoring this inspirational series! Btw I put a 👍on this video!
I respect Vogue so much for doing this series. I hope this pushes the door even more open for black people in the modeling industry.
Don't give them too much respect, they are very late. Feels very much like a jump on the band wagon. This series doesn't mean lasting change. Continually, holding those in powerful positions accountable, that's important. Respect goes to those who are telling the truth on the industry.
@@vcheekv but Caucasian models are victims of abused at that time 2000s were heroic chic was started until now.
Great series vogue! Keep it up!
Wonderful, informative series that guves3 me a whole new perspective on the fashion industry & the women (and men) involved in it! Much respect to these hard working ladies--models!💙
Joan Smalls is splendid
Cheers from San Diego California
Loving this series!
🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 I love my country. Girl this is so inspirational to all young Jamaicans!!
When episodes drop it makes my day! Loving this series for real.
Bruh this series is EVERYTHING
Loved this, need more videos like this!
This was magical ❤🎉🙏🏾💃🏽
Inspiring! Truly‼️ I’ve been going back n forth as to wether I should start my modeling career but this pushes me to start and get my face out there. I am Jamaican so it’s going to be very hard (in my opinion) but I’m ready to try!
Yes you should go for it, I want to do it too try entering plus model Jamaica competition 👍
Joan Smalls mentioned Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman being the only black models on the runway and I recall very well that time frame of fashion. I have loved them as models since then
I can only imagine how difficult it was for them at the time, grateful to be the girl selected but sad about the others who didn't get the opportunity
Same I remember that era
I remember around 2014, when these girls were around the height of their career. Even Beyonce featured them in her Yonce music video.
I recall a fight between chanel iman and jourdan dunn. I'm sure it was because of tokenism. I'm glad those days are over.
I remember when Chanel and Sessilee had a little something with one another as well
Loved this, extremely engaging
I had no idea how powerful Prada was and remains.
stunning job!
This is going to be the best episode do far 💃😏💃😏.
I agree, they were actually much more honest about Prada's role in this than I expected
I love this series so much, it’s amazing! so interesting and well put together, every woman in this video is so incredibly beautiful/ strong.
Excellent excellent series! Bravo Vogue!
Now…. Let’s open doors for SHORT MODELS! the next frontier
Two words that describe the Prada effect: BLAND & BORING.
😍😍😍 I look forward to this
This is amazing 🤩
Love this series... Wow! And I remember well this era and how it eventually changed. The rise of social media ....
BethAnn Thank you for being courageous outspoken you are tru Trailblazer for black women all over the world... You deserve all your 🌺 We love you Queen#SuperModel
WHITE ENVY /RACISM AT ITS WORST.designers carrying a grudge for the very black women who wanted to make a living just like them and these are designers who are filty rich. Some designers or lack thereof were unheard of/unpopular and a lot of their clothing got free advertising from black women/black communitys from just wearing them in the streets/public.these women bring these clothing to life and their skin colour/complexion looks good with everything they wear.so these designers/casting agents need to show a whole lot of respect and gratitude to these Queens. Designers are forgetting that they can be here today, bank rupt tommorrow and not a dam thing sells. Humble thy self.
Sessilee Lopez had such a strong PRESENCE when she was working back in the day.
The fact that I can LITERALLY count who the black models were working in that era still baffles me. There was Jourdan, Chanel, Arlenis, Sessilee, Joan, Janelle and….wait; I can’t continue my talley sadly.
I enjoyed this series so much!!
Wow eye opening, heart breaking, yet so educating about what was going on during certain periods. As a model, it was hard for me to break into the industry because “ we already have a model that looks like you” kept being used. Now I understand. it makes since when everyone in this video kept talking about certain time periods when black models weren’t getting recognized as much. I’m just now getting my “ just due” but I have more work to do! I loved this segment, I can’t wait for more!
BRAVO and thank you! 👏🏽
Excellent Episodes! Thank you so much!
so good, thank you.
This is an amazing interview with these beautiful people
Black people need to support the brands who genuinely use black models. And mind you i bet the asian and latinos have it hard to. For eg. If it was me and i needed 30 or 40 models for a show it would have to split equally between black, asian, latino and white models with range of body sizes and height, that is real diversity.
ALL THIS IS JUST LEGENDARY!!
Good👍 about time ❤️
Lot of talent in every race. Glad that things are changing for the better
I wish this episode had been longer! So many interesting points. I remember seeing Sessilee in some French Vogue model documentary and seeing how she wasn’t getting as much work as the other models, and I couldn’t comprehend it cuz she’s truly exquisite. But it white models everywhere. It was such an ugly period in Fashion history.
I was thinking the same thing, this episode could have been 1.5hrs on its own
Every episode of this series I hope it’s not the last! LOVING it.
Same here. I think black women need more leverage in the modeling industry and the like. It's about time black women are finally being notificed.
DAMN, this was hella good. I want it to be longer!
Joan Smalls !!! So much love 💗 💗 💗 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Thank you Iman for this eye opening beautiful series of the intelligence and beauty of our Black Queens. Changing fashion and the world.
I love this series, I am so glad I am able to name every single one of these models and also have been following the careers of the big supers like Iman, Tyra, Naomi, Karen, Beverly, Pat, Liya etc. My fav has to be Joan Smalls, love this girl to death : amazing !!! :)
Man these girls are so strong! Glad they believed in their dream
Thank goodness for James
I honestly cannot express how much this series means to me
Steven Meisel is amazing my goodness what a guy and Franca ❤️
I luv that series
This was soo good. Beautifully told. Hat off to you Bethann, Iman and Naomi.
This is such an amazing series I'm about to follow and support all of these models right now!! Thank you Vogue and thank you #RUclips
I love this, Iv watched every single one ...
Thank you Sessilee and Joan for your Afro Latina contributions!!! So lovely seeing women like myself represented ❤❤❤
I totally get the disdain for influencer models. Because wheew...
10 year freakin crazyyy
i wish alek wek, jessica white and liya were in this. it was so good 👏
Hopefully they will be in the upcoming episodes.
Thank You dear Universe for this message and the sending of my Blessings. Hallelujah! Amen! 😶🙏❤
Everyone is gorgeous
Sesilee Lopez is absolutely exquisite. She should have been as big as someone like Gigi hadid now. No comparison.
Absolutely gorgeous. I would go crazy just to talk to these beautifuls. OMG.
I am mesmerized by each episode. So on time and clear to any possible dummies to finally understand the absurdity of non-inclusivity in a diversified human planet.
This episode explains where the starving-Zombie-on drugs look started.
I wished Naomi would talk on that series too 😭💗
Let's not talk about how they still have makeup artists and hairstylists that can't do black hair and makeup properly practically abusing the dark skinned black girls with bad hair dos and horrible make up.
Ever think the problem stems from having not as many black fashion designers?
Black is forever beauty
Gorgeous inspiring models ♥️
Thank you!
Love, love, love my black ( all shades) sisters, mothers. Goddesses.
Yes! I love that vogue is doing this
Isn't it amazing
Fashion designers went to war with supermodels and I wasn't around to see it 😭
Who the hell are these casting directors? Thank goodness Bethan spoke up
Time to start making your own black runways with black designers
A big thanks to Bethann Hardison, Edward Enninful, Steven Meisel, and the others who continue to use their influence to push against the wall of racism that Prada spearheaded for so long. Most of those same gatekeepers who refused to book black models are still working, but now are simply checking off the POC boxes in the castings, replacing the models the next season. Sessilee Lopez spoke about being too dark for clients, but now many only want to book the darkest skinned black models because they are "edgier" and they want a black background to contrast a brightly colored garment.
+
oh my, thank you so much for this! im not a model, im not black, but we gotta start talking about how toxic fashion industry could be for non white people in RECENT history. so grateful for this.
and of course, all this amazing women, who went through so much, too much, and today they are standing here so proudly and beautifly.
Stunning women, incredible beauty 😳
I will be on the Vogue cover soon .
this is such a heartbreaking and disheartening story 😢
This reminds me of the time when I worked for Nieman Marcus... I worked at the Corporate office... From time to time I would see models from Americas Next Top Model... There was this lady that worked there that made all of the decisions on which models would get hired and how much that they would be paid. One day I stopped by her cubicle and saw photos of the models. We struck up a conversation and she start how she makes here decisions on which model gets hired.. She point out this one white male model and she stated why she would not hire him... "His head it too big"... now to me, this guy looked like he could pull any female... a white female model... "Her thighs and butt are too big"... but to me she was gorgeous... I couldn't believe some of the trifling reasons she gave on why some models were not used... Even the pay... I say where 7 models for the same gig... One model was getting paid $20,000.. while another was getting $7,000... FOR THE SAME GIG! That one female sets the definition of beauty... and that's a shame...
Great this is interesting and inspiring 😊 blessings to my country 🇯🇲 and all over the world 🌍❤️ no picking sides I just love fashion whatever I wear or do it's just rocks 😄😀 today's is my day in the beautiful weather just walking in the rain 🌧️ and everyone I bumped into give me lots of compliments about my smile my fashion I'm like lol 😆 a model just simple and natural each time I see them I always looking different by the way I dress we must be here to love and support each other grace Jones , Nadine and Naomi growing up has a teen I admired those ladies I remember where Nadine was coming from and look where she is now you got it girl 🇯🇲😊 back then I almost got the opportunity to be one of these models it was my age why I miss it in 2001 surprisingly I still look the same I still can be if I want I will be surely ready
they are so beautiful damn
Joan Smalls is Puerto Rican! So, let's include Latinas in this conversation! Latinas are also women of color and Afro Latinas can be black complexion wise. Latinas are also discriminated against and often not represented unless they look white.
I have stated and I am stating again, I am a Designer and plan to do my own show and my vision is to use black models! They have an energy and carry the clothes! This crap must must stop! Thanks to Edward and Olivier too!
So grateful for the truth expressed in this video!
Loved that the film crew was all women !
Blessing, love greatness.
Remarkable story
I thank God for Riccardo Tisci who gave Joan her break at Givenchy back in the day.
Naomi, Iman and Bethann are Godsent in so many ways in the fashion world. Thanks VOGUE for this documentary series.
What a fantastic video! I’m so happy that black models are speaking out against this, honestly. We are just as beautiful as other races of women.
👠 this is exactly why I do not wear "designer" clothing !! I'd be damn, I'll line their pockets with my hard earned BLACK money!
The problem is with the consumers too! No power exceeds buying power if you don’t see ppl who look like you model the item then its not made for you, black, asian & arabian too! Its time we created our own spaces instead of forever begging for a seat at other ppls tables
Thank you, Vogue.
They were threatened by Black models because they take things to a whole new powerful level
I need some designers and most importantly anna wintour to sit on that chair and explain themselves cus there's no way only casting agents were the problem. I was so deep into high fashion gossip during the late 00s and early 10s and we always heard about designers and fashion editors getting what they want, they were the sugarbabies of investors, metaphorically and literally sometimes, so how come you wanted more black models but conde nast said no because they didn't sell like anna once said, look at franca she did a whole issue!
Exactly. To be perfectly clear, if Anna Wintour went to any designer and told them they needed to include more diversity, they would have.
exactly, i believe olivier when he said that agencies would tell him there were no models of color bc he always used woc in his runway shows, but for the large part designers are the ones who give a vision to casting directors and they would use that to cast models. it's easy to blame casting directors but that's not how it works. malaika firth was the first black model to be in a prada ad since naomi campbell (not to mention malaika is biracial and tbh her skin is really whitewashed in the ad), you're telling me miuccia couldn't say she wanted a black girl before?
Yes, honestly, I wonder if a real response would have been to turn around and boycott Prada. Instead you have Bethann Hardison saying ‘we really have to give Miuccia Prada credit’ ... I’m not sure ...
Yes. I need Anna in the hot seat because this was going on for way too long. She needs to be held to the fire and answer some questions.
@@THEMODELGENE instead she was busy approving the lebron james as king kong cover smh. But she's a clever lady I give her that, she rode that blm wave so smoothly
I love to hear something from miuccia
not casting a black model for over a decade says enough
