Thanks Peter! Great information - if you can actually handle the equipment. Just wanted to mention that you can adjust the balance (some what) by adding weight (sinkers) into the rod handle or to the reel spool (lead-core trolling line). It's not an elegant solution but it can help. With Covid, making purchases "sight unseen" online with only the (vague) product descriptions for reference is stressful. I've just gone through this exercise setting up a 10 foot, 7 weight stillwater outfit and will only know if I've guessed right when the lines arrive and I can put everything together. Cheers!

I’ve never understood why Fly Anglers don’t balance their outfits- perfectly explained and agree whole heartedly

I've been watching you for awhile. ( Along with your book ) But I found I should of stuck to one instructor? I joined fly tyers for beginners ( which I thank you for participating in ) But now I've heard phrases such as Jam knott, and pinch knott? I feel like I'm starting over. But, in a good way. I just got to involved, to fast.

If you're happy with an instructor, no need to change. Focus on learning a few things well rather than try and take everything in. You'll have more fun that way and your skill level will improve more quickly.

Great topic you don't here much about balanced outfits these days. I've mastered fly fishing in Stillwater's where I'm aloud 2 rods. So now I use a spinning outfit and trying all matter's of lures. So far the fly catches all the decent Rainbow Trout 3 to 10lbs. With the proliferation off carbon fiber reel body's you can upsize reels at least 2 sizes bigger. Interestingly I fish the fly and lure side by side and when the bite is off I keep catching on the fly whilst other's are just dragging a line. Always enjoy your show thight lines.

The balance will change with the amount of line off the tip.

Of course, but getting the static balance right to begin with, makes a difference.

Does this mean it's totally wrong, if your combo isn't balanced?

Nope, just means it'll feel somewhat tip heavy and more fatiguing over a long day if it balances too far forward. This is especially noticeable on long nymphing rods as we're holding them out in front of us where the strain on the forearm can get really noticeable after a few hours.
