I used to paint to this when I was 19 living in a halfway house in Phoenix, AZ. I was getting clean from heroin and sober for the longest time since 17... a month. Talk about having all your emotions come out at the same time. I was fortunate to have oils and watercolors, my Pentax K1000 and my beautiful keyboard I recorded on and still do. I always felt like this music took me back... even when I was 14 and started high school listening to Pearl Jam and Radiohead, Depeche Mode and The Cure, slower songs always made me feel like my body was being taken back in time... like I wanted to go back. I feel that way now, ... I'm 38. I'm clean, and I have that same feeling as I did at 14 before I touched that stupid garbage. Being melancholy is just a part of some peoples personalities. If you can embrace it and make it your ally, it's kinda like a friendly ghost... ~cheers to all the music lovers

This reminds me of my dad, my mom is divorced from him and I visit him from time to time. We just listen to this song while looking at the stars from the porch. No Wi-Fi, just music, adventuring, kayaking and chores. Life is simpler with dad.

yeah "emo" has always been a bad label. It has three separate waves that are effectively completely different genres. Original emo was hardcore punk, midwest was essentially indie rock, and 2000's emo took the asthetic of midwest emo and mixed it with Blink-182 style pop punk. However, barring heavily pop-punk influenced "emo", most forms of emo generally use similar notation found in original emotive hardcore like Embrace, and can also be found in stuff like math rock , lots of extended chords like 9ths and 7ths, sus and diminished chords etc. and obviously lyrical themes have stayed the same since that's one of the most defining characteristics of the genre and where it gets its name. I'd say some 90's post hardcore could also be considered emo or is heavily inspired by original emo. Emo, Screamo and Post Hardcore have all kind of evolved together interestingly enough. They all started off really solid and with similar sounds and then by the early 2000's they had all devolved into the same similar type of shitty music. Unfortunately those old forms of the genre seemed to have died as the only real revival scenes im seeing nowadays are for midwest emo. No one gives a shit about music like Antioch Arrow or Unwound but a bunch of teens are eating up 90's math rock and midwest emo atm.

Is anybody else sad the video of the entire album was taken down on RUclips? There was a video with more than 2 million views of LP1 and the comments had a lot of interesting discussions and diary entries of young people who fell in love with this band as quickly as they fell out of love with their ex. Something was just so beautiful about all these heartbroken people gathering and talking about their feelings underneath a powerful and emotional album. Don’t even know why I bother, this song is just a meme now.
Same thing happened to one of my most favorite songs Found God in a Tomato, lots of great discussions and a small community worth checking in on was formed in the comments. RUclips turned the comments off, effectively deleting the community.

Me too, man. These past two weeks have been awesome for me. The greatest girl ever who I totally have feelings for was like "yo, I've got feelings for you too," and her and I have like a thing now. Feels sad knowing that I lost my social skills over the summer prior to this first year to reflect on my self-destructing mindset, and now that has ironically come back to destroy my first impressions. Have some experiences. Doesn't need to be highschool. Just whenever you're ready to be happy. If you spent your highschool years struggling to be content with yourself like I have, it's okay to wait to be happy. There's no deadline, or set path to being happy. There is something about the sound and feel about Midwest emo that I really enjoy. Like I find it super relaxing. I just picture going to the mountains and hanging out with friends when hearing this type of music.
As I listened a lot to this album when I ended High School, I associate a lot of thrilling and haunting memories with it, but I always wondered if these memories became golden thanks to the album, or if the memories enhanced greatly my appreciation of the album... Don't know if I was clear, but I found this question interesting.
What is said on this article is pretty obvious, but interesting nonetheless. I still believe American Football's music has some inherent elements that makes the listener more prone to nostalgia : extended/suspended harmonies, unending plagal cadenzas, (really defining points of their music) warm production... not to mention the lyrics obviously. They create a kind of homesickness with their music that is a prodigious catalyst of nostalgia.
To carry on with my point about suspended harmonies: a lot of AF's music relies on playing the tonic chord of the key over every degree of the scale. This omnipresence of the tonic gives you the feeling to be secured, at home, but at the same time, the harmony change with the bass line, so you're moving too. That what's it about: a strange mixed feeling of being at home and away, comforted and anguished.
The first time I heard American football was on RUclips a few days ago and I can tell you that nostalgia might have a small role in how you feel about this band but they are still an amazing band

Orlando Barrera I feel you. I know one person who is into them in my state......the other one I met is all the way across the world from me in New Zealand. I'm glad that this music has brought us together, despite the distance and the incredibly long time that it took. This album moves me to tears sometimes and it's one of my all-time favorites.
I only knew about this song from the meme but than I actual sat down and listened to it and damn, it's sad in like a weird nostalgic way. I haven't had too many relationships but my most damaging one was my last one, it was my longest one too, about 2 years. These lyrics really make me reflect on that time and remembering how I could tell we were slowly falling out of love and just feeling that helplessness again, it really makes you feel your emotions. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, it reminds me I'm still human, and I've got a lot of room to keep growing and we've all just got to hang in there and keep pushing forward

Is anybody else sad the video of the entire album was taken down on RUclips? There was a video with more than 2 million views of LP1 and the comments had a lot of interesting discussions and diary entries of young people who fell in love with this band as quickly as they fell out of love with their ex. Something was just so beautiful about all these heartbroken people gathering and talking about their feelings underneath a powerful and emotional album. Don’t even know why I bother, this song is just a meme now.
Same thing happened to one of my most favorite songs Found God in a Tomato, lots of great discussions and a small community worth checking in on was formed in the comments. RUclips turned the comments off, effectively deleting the community.
This happens with a lot of emo songs.
Movies like Juno had the same thing until its comments got turned off (until i asked the original poster if he could turn them back on for that reason)

As I listened a lot to this album when I ended High School, I associate a lot of thrilling and haunting memories with it, but I always wondered if these memories became golden thanks to the album, or if the memories enhanced greatly my appreciation of the album...

I still believe American Football's music has some inherent elements that makes the listener more prone to nostalgia : extended/suspended harmonies, unending plagal cadenzas, (really defining points of their music) warm production... not to mention the lyrics obviously.
They create a kind of homesickness with their music that is a prodigious catalyst of nostalgia.
To carry on with my point about suspended harmonies: a lot of AF's music relies on playing the tonic chord of the key over every degree of the scale.
This omnipresence of the tonic gives you the feeling to be secured, at home, but at the same time, the harmony change with the bass line, so you're moving too. That what's it about: a strange mixed feeling of being at home and away, comforted and anguished.
The first time I heard American football was on RUclips a few days ago and I can tell you that nostalgia might have a small role in how you feel about this band but they are still an amazing band

I'm glad that this music has brought us together, despite the distance and the incredibly long time that it took. This album moves me to tears sometimes and it's one of my all-time favorites.
I only knew about this song from the meme but than I actual sat down and listened to it and damn, it's sad in like a weird nostalgic way. I haven't had too many relationships but my most damaging one was my last one, it was my longest one too, about 2 years. These lyrics really make me reflect on that time and remembering how I could tell we were slowly falling out of love and just feeling that helplessness again, it really makes you feel your emotions.
