    I've watched at least 10 videos describing axis rotation/tilt and rev rate and hands down this video gave me my "ah ha" moment!!! I'm a struggling 195 average bowler still trying to crack the 200 threshold and ditch my handicap. Working on my spare game and using this video should put me over the top. Can't believe i've been throwing my ball down the lane incorrectly all these years!!! Thanks JR!! Your videos are the best HANDS DOWN!! Hope to one day meet you and thank you personally!

    A bunch of other places I saw only talked about how to get the fingers on the inside of the ball. It was great to be able to see what that actually meant. I almost instantly realized that I was always on the outside of the ball. I am looking forward to trying it when I am at the lanes next.

    wow... i have been throwing my ball exactly as you described. i've had my fingers on the outside for the longest time as well as not flipping my wrist. i notice that for my first 10 frames or so i am not thinking about it and just doing what feels right. after that, i tend to think about it more and my fingers move to the outside as well as i will begin to lock my wrist because i thought these were correct! thank you so much for this video and please keep them coming. excellent information, great camera angles, and the explanations are PERFECT. have not been able to find something like this on youtube yet.

    Thanks for these. There’s a video online where a couple coaches with some real credentials tackle the question “How to increase rev rate?” Their answer is pretty much “if you’re past a certain age, you probably can’t.” Well, that’s encouraging. I do struggle with hand position, once the ball swings back past my leg I lose track of where it is and my hand rotates to the outside of the ball. Then when I get to the bottom of the swing I have nowhere to go. Coach has me working no-step drills. Ain’t no fun in fundamentals.

      Get the fundamentals right, and the rest will come with it. I watched the same video, but, it is not entirely true. It's all in the timing and a relaxed arm.

    The great Marshall Holman was the first bowler I remember using this technique. Of course I don't know if he knew that this would be called a "yo yo/frisbee" release. In his video, he never explained the how to release this way but just to stay behind the ball. In fact it was Don Johnson video that really explained this relese in a basic way. This was in the 70's early 80's! I would use the slo mo option in my VCR and saw that the release was this different that what has always been taught. All said, I have a release similar to Walter Ray Williams if I had to compare. I would have to go through a rough "learning" season for me to change to this release. I'm happy where I'm at.

    I have seen a lot of rev rate related bowling videos on RUclips, yours included. My issue is not just rev rate but ball weight. I have two at 13 lbs. I mostly throw two-handed and can handle these easily. Earlier today I scored 232 with the 13 lb balls, very good for me. Then I switched to 14 lbs and my score dropped by about 100 points. The problem is I just don't have the arm strength to throw the 14 lb ball. I just bought two of them and so don't want to call it quits. Technically, based on body weight, I should use a 15 lb ball. All I can say to that is, hell no. I notice that if I really move my arm back in the swing I can get some extra umph behind the throw, but even then, it's a bit of a struggle. I've had some great shots doing this, but they're surrounded by a bunch of lousy throws. Any advice/strategy how to handle a heavier ball? Thank you.

  • @drwisdom1
    @drwisdom1 5 лет назад +2

    The technique being shown by Mr. Raymond won't increase your rev rate, but it will impart more side roll and the ball will hook more. Even so, I always keep my fingers at the bottom for the following reasons. I am smaller than Mr. Raymond and lose too much power if I'm not behind the ball. I have been bowling since 1979 when we barely had any hook. Today's balls and synthetic lanes have so much hook I have to make sure to buy a ball that doesn't hook too much. While my hook isn't huge, I have enough hook and getting more is playing with fire. I believe in accuracy, consistency, and straighter. I want my ball hitting the pocket in the same place every time and if the hook is wrong I want too little so I leave a ten pin rather than too much hook and hitting high. To accomplish that I keep my wrist locked in position and don't snap or vary it. If you vary your hand position, you add a significant variable to your game that requires greater understanding and experience to control. My observation is when I throw with more side roll it increases the chances of leaving the ten pin, but the strikes are more exciting.

  • @MrKnothead63
    @MrKnothead63 2 года назад

    Will thar increase your amount of hook

  • @Accumulator1
    @Accumulator1 5 лет назад +1

    Heck no! Keeping elbow in fingers way back behind the ball, yes but I never come around like that. It puts an incorrect rotation on the ball. There is a USBC tutorial vid that explains that. My fingers stay behind the ball, releasing straight up. The side weight does the rest when the ball reaches the break point.

      House balls do not have a surface that will hook much, but if you throw it slower, it will hook if you throw it right. Just don't get your hopes up.

    • @pryx4661
      @pryx4661 5 лет назад

      Honestly, It's all about the bowler not the ball in a sense. I know many people as well as myself that can play with a house ball and get it to hook as much as any ball. The problem is the cover on the ball of a house ball is much less reactive than a high performance ball that has a big weight block to add hook/energy/pin action.

      Nothing. They way shown here by JR is how you increase Axis tilt. So it is normal for you to throw it more like a spinner if you do this. If you don't want to throw it like a spinner, place the back of your hand more towards your body (palm facing the lane to the right) and then do your release. I hope this helps.

    • @vazis
      @vazis 5 лет назад

      Are you referring to walking speed or ball speed? Walking speed can be a little tricky since it can throw off your timing if you aren't careful, but if you need to walk faster but don't want to mess up your timing you can hold the ball at a different height to help compensate. In the event you were referring to ball speed, holding the ball up higher can help a little bit, but you can also put a little extra power in the ball by pushing off with the leg you don't land on before you slide. Hope this helped!

    • @bladeknockingon700
      @bladeknockingon700 5 лет назад +1

      Ball speed is generated with your legs and a loose arm swing. Simply let the ball fall from the top of your swing. If you want more speed accelerate through the bottom of the swing and you will have more speed. But remember with an increase in speed rev rate needs to match so that the ball doesn't over or under hook.

      @@arecus54 Think about it, the spinner shot is similar to when a football players spins the ball on its point which you could never do without your thumb. It's squeezing the ball against your thumb and rotating your wrist. Has your guy checked the oil track to see the amount of axis tilt you have. It's only possible to get spinner rotation if you're rotating wrist with your thumb still in the ball, maybe you're rotating your wrist early. I pretty sure it's one of those. Thumb late or wrist early.
