It is so sad what the media did to the blobfish. Imagine if aliens found a human body floating around in the vacuum of space and declared humans the ugliest species in the universe based on the bloated corpse.
Blob fish aren't the only ones who turn ugly when brought up in pressure changes. Because any deep sea fish that are pulled up like that can have various disturbing things happen, such as, and not limited too, the pressure getting onto their eyes and making them bubble up and pop out of their eyesockets, and the skin of their eyes inflating.

I know some sources like The Smithsonian word it that way but I don't think their low rates of reproduction are why they're long lived: lobsters live around the same age or longer and breed more regularly. Blobfish not really have any predators probably has more to do with their lifespan.
@@_cloudface_ there are multiple factors for this phenomenon, so yeah pretty much. The only actual predators they have are us, and we don't even mean to catch them

The fact that people thought blobfish naturally looked like that is basically the same as if an alien discovered a flayed human and was like "wow those are ugly." They deserve a new name imo.
The reason blobfish need to live in the deep dark ocean is because the ocean pressure helps their tissue stay in place but when taking out the water they well is the body tissues they have get damaged
I think the ugliest fish is often the most fascinating. Surfaced blobs are rather interesting but then we have anglerfish and viper fish that take the cake

actually the blobfish doesnt look like that when its in the bottom of the ocean. its when it reaches the surface and the lack of pressure causes it to look ugly. (ok guys i get it my bad).
an accurate comparison would be a species of deep sea creatures accidentally dragging a human down to them and naming it "Smashmonkey" after the appearance of their body, which has been crushed by the pressure
I feel so bad for blob fishes cuz they were never meant to be in the surface, their bodies were made to live in the deep sea. Like they’re so cute when they’re down in the ocean!
