I am so glad I found your channel. All dead malls channels are retail documentaries. You have mastered the art of enfolding factual information into a seamless story telling narrative, punctuated by nearly poetic impressions of how the mall makes you feel. They all leave me feeling like I was actually there. Simply brilliant!
I noticed you do mostly malls in Eastern KY , Western WV , and western Va. glad you did these , otherwise we wouldn’t know they exist. Understand you moved to Ashland from Cincinnati.
Hey there, I went to this mall before as well as Easton and Polaris. As of a couple months ago, Polaris Mall was on the news due to a gun being seen. Its parent's company had gone into bankruptcy. As for Easton, it is growing more and more with new buildings and eateries being added.
Kristin, I'm glad that you're back making videos the way you normally do. It is also great that you begin to film the "not-so-dead" malls, as me and most of our 2020 audience seem to demand "more than just dead malls", but RETAILING IN GENERAL since the Pandemic has put it in a state of transformation, which we want to see (and influence to some extent) what becomes of it... I KNOW you're going to get "a kick out of it".
If it has an interesting story and is visually interesting, I'm less concerned about it being empty--I want to make videos that are enjoyable to watch. Thank you very much for watching!
This looks so much like the mall I grew up going to (fair oaks near the capitol beltway in VA) I wonder if they were the same designer? ETA: has to be! Those planters take me right back to 1998!
Tuttle is still my favorite. Im from Ohio and live in Reynoldsburg, we lived in Texas for 7 years and would come up for Christmas every other year and Tuttle was the spot
This is my hometown mall, as I grew up in Dublin. It's sad to see it turn into a "second rate" mall, as it was the go to Mall competing with Polaris and Easton, but about 10 years ago dropped off, as the other two kept growing and updating and snatching up higher end stores, leaving Tuttle with the scraps. Also, it's pretty crazy to see that there are some stores in their that have been operating since it opened, like Helizberg Diamonds, Spencer's, Lids(was Hat Zone until Lids bough them) and a few others.
The problem is, at the anchors anyway, that staff are limited and what are there, don't care. This other lady and me were trying to check out at JCP. The employee ignored us until I finally asked her if I could check out there. She said they're closed. The lady behind me said that the other register (at the other end of the store) was also closed. I went to the jewelry counter and asked the man there where to check out. He pointed to the vacant register where the other customer had been and said that it was indeed open. So we both go there and finally the employee there shows up. Of course then the pants ring up full price. I told her they're 30% off. She put in the discount - I'm sure the price was still wrong so I just gave up on it. I should have gotten them after all of that, but I had just enough cash for what the price on the little sign had said, and I can't justify it when I can get BETTER PANTS on Amazon shipped to my house for less. I can only imagine the theft that goes on in these two anchors if Macy's is as bad. That's what's sinking the mall further and further into debt.
spot on with your story. Dublin was a different kinda place. One minute it's a cool average to above average place. You had to look like the vibe.A block away it was so uptight everything sqeeked. I'd love to see what's left of the surrounding area restaurants smaller shopping centers those were usually the tougher jobs and some we're doa and never really got going. Oh well such a long time ago nice to have my memory jogged. Great story forgive my rant
i so wish that you owuld have been able to see that sears when it was still open... it was really weird. first and foremost, it had a level two entrance and a level one entrance, much like that JCPenny's does. the sears also had this weirdly long hallway on the upper floor to go to the bathroom just passed the electronics section. it was where the defunct optical and photo studio was, down a long winding hallway, past the stockroom, past the management offices, past the breakroom, and then finally the women's bathroom. and if you wanted the drinking fountains or the men's bathroom, it was down the hall and around the corner. it was a five minute walk from the main store to the bathroom. miss that place.
This mall seems to be footprint wise a copy of the Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Mi(built in the early 1980's) which is also a Taubman property. BTW: the Detroit area also has/had Northland, Eastland and Westland Malls.
Love this. It reminds me of International Plaza in Tampa. I had to check, and it was in fact a Taubman mall as well. It was built in 2001, and is still high end. The architecture is almost exactly the same. It took business away from the 53 year old Westshore Mall, and was the final nail in the epic DeBartolo mall, TampaBay Center Mall. There is also Citrus Park Mall to the north about 10 miles away. It was built in 1999, and is mid market with Macy’s, Dillard’s etc but no high end stores.
I loved your Cincinnati series, I grew up there and lived close to Forest Fair, so it was a big nostalgia trip for me. Now I live outside of Columbus and we frequently go to Tuttle. We got to check out Scene75 right before the pandemic, and it was actually pretty fun.
We have a Scene75 down in Cincinnati (it's in the old K-Mart in Milford)...I never made it over there before I moved but I've always wanted to check it out. Apparently the Tuttle one has Karaoke which makes me excited to check it out on a future trip.
I mean when you've been nonsensically calling yourself "cruise director" for two years, you gotta go all-in at some point. I'm glad you appreciated my absurd joke!
Great video, the mall looks really nice and clean on the inside but the parking lot looks very run down. I recently picked up something from pottery barn and was surprised about the condition of the parking lot. I don’t know when you filmed this but with the low number of people walking around, I don’t know how the stores pay the rent to stay in there. I love the commentary you provide with the history of the mall.
Thank you! This was shot the last week of August. I agree about the parking lot--especially around that bend by Scene 75 the landscaping is looking pretty shabby.
Great video. Let me check you on one thing, that 18 minute drive time between Tuttle and Polaris? Maybe in the middle of the night - the traffic between N Hilliard (really where this mall is located) and Westerville is a NIGHTMARE. I moved away from my home town in the mid-'00s and can't imagine the N outer belt has gotten any better. On another note, perhaps you could dive into the smaller "neighborhood" indoor malls of Columbus. Is Worthington Square Mall still open? I know Scarborogh Mall in Brice closed in the 90s (what a short-lived but brilliant mall of the late 80s), or perhaps the grandmother of malls in Columbus, Town & Country - great history there (outdoor I know, but how is it doing?). As a mallrat in the '80s (Eastland was my 2nd home) having a COTA bus pass was perfect for mall hopping all over cowtown. I worked at City Center in the early '90s and Tuttle is a near carbon copy architecturally to that mall. Keep up the good work and good luck with the channel!
Thank you for watching Jeff! The Shops at Worthington are still alive and kicking, the mall on Brice Rd has since become Lindsey Honda, and New Market Mall is a school now--when I was up that way I drove around it but there are some obvious concerns about filming around a place where kids are so I didn't get any footage...When I was in town, traffic wasn't too bad but it was around noon on a weekday so I can imagine rush hour being pretty awful (it always seems like I get stuck in it when I go up to the state fair).
This entire piece was AMAZING. Love the lines in this architecture, and LIVING for the AWESOME '80s femme fatale analogy at the end; so well composed. 💜
Very informative as per usual, I rather enjoyed the voiceover narration that accompanies the videography. I thought the “Love Boat” style intro was a nice touch. 😁
Just asking have you seen Tower city and Galleria at Erieview Cleveland. Just asking I know it’s Dead malls or going out of business malls but after a while you must get tired of seeing that. Like this video of this mall it’s nice looking and looks like it’s still busy at least that’ll cheer you up instead of walking through a dead hallway. I like Tower city one section in that mall where when you look out through the window you can see downtown Cleveland vehicles going over the road and then you look down and the mall goes down underneath the road.
I have not made it up to Cleveland yet-I live in West Virginia so it’s a bit of a hike for me but the Cleveland Arcade and Tower City would be worth making a weekend out of.
UniComm Productions Then two places is nice. The only reason why I know well actually for 14 years I was a delivery driver in eastern Ohio so I got to see a lot of things Brown Stadium tower city Gallery at review problem is is I know that state better than my own. But when you’re in that state seven days a week making deliveries it’s kind a hard to get to know your own state.
This mall looks lovely! Reminds me of some of the ones I’ve been to in the Greater Toronto Area (Canada). And a question about the music... do you know if this is a cover or some sort of rendition of the Animal Crossing theme?! Or did you just pick it at random?
It is! It’s a lo-fi beats remix of the 5 AM music from ACNH! Good ear! (Most of the other music in this episode is from Palm Mall Mars by Cat System Corp)
Love the Towering Inferno glass elevators !

Well thank you! I’m glad you found us too!
Marley station mall is my childhood mall and now local dead mall. So cool to see its sibling. I love this style mall thank you for the video. 👍
Beautiful mall.
I worked at the ICI Paint store on Goodale in 1997. I mixed a lot of paint for this mall.
You did a great job, it still looks great!
Taubman was a man of his time. An amazing architect and developer. May his legacy live on. Great video as always!
I noticed you do mostly malls in Eastern KY , Western WV , and western Va. glad you did these , otherwise we wouldn’t know they exist. Understand you moved to Ashland from Cincinnati.
I live in Huntington, WV which, while further from a lot of things, it's opened up a whole world of new places to film!
I would stare at so many architectural aspects and forget to shop if I visited this aw inspiring mall
I’ve been here countless times growing up! I still go here when I can. Great video!
Hey there, I went to this mall before as well as Easton and Polaris. As of a couple months ago, Polaris Mall was on the news due to a gun being seen. Its parent's company had gone into bankruptcy. As for Easton, it is growing more and more with new buildings and eateries being added.
Always love seeing a Taubman beauty.

You are absolutely correct: it is the same firm behind both malls!
Thanks! This video had me searching for vintage (😳) photos of before the remodel!
I LOVE your metaphorical descriptions of these malls! You have become my favorite dead mall channel!
Thank you so much!
This place looks so similar to the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, OH. Great job.
It does have a lot in common with it!
One of those massage chairs ate my dollar the other day.
Tuttle is still my favorite. Im from Ohio and live in Reynoldsburg, we lived in Texas for 7 years and would come up for Christmas every other year and Tuttle was the spot

I worked here back in the 90s. It was a really nice mall at the time.
Love the intro.
Thank you! It was so weird that I wasn't sure people would "get it".

Dublin seems like a nice place to live, although very sterile and corporate.
I’ve been to this mall so many times, it’s sad to see what it’s become!
The ceiling /skylights in this mall are gorgeous! 😍
23 years old is only a baby in mall years, haha.
"cappuccino court" is late 90s as hell.
It’s so new! And what’s weird is Columbus has two malls that are even newer!
This mall is badass. Fantastic video.
I just learned I am a few months older than the mall I grew up with
I can't believe it's as new as it is! If you would have had me guess I would have said late 80s and not late 90s.

I've been in a few super long hallways like that in department stores, they're always a little unnerving if you're alone!

I feel like (Direction)Gate and (Direction)Land have to be the two most popular mall names in the US.
great job Kristin
Love this Mall!
4:38 wtf just happened?
You meet the most exciting people at the mall.
I was wondering what that was too. At first I thought it might be a Halloween costume!
Love this. It reminds me of International Plaza in Tampa. I had to check, and it was in fact a Taubman mall as well. It was built in 2001, and is still high end. I would love to do a Florida mall trip at some point.
Tampa bay center was rouse co of Columbia md now GGP /Brookfield it’s sister mall still strong is the mall in Columbia looks the same.
Visited here recently on some downtime during a business trip and was not disappointed, though it is a lot more dead now.
It’s not doing great and that’s depressing because it’s such a pretty mall. They just don’t put that kind of thought into design like that anymore.

@@UniCommProductions I find it delightful! What an imagination and sense of humor you have!

There is just something about those shapes that makes me think of a character from Dynasty! Thank you!
UniComm Productions YES!!! Your description TOTALLY invoked an image of Alexis Carrington Colby! 💙
Looks like Marley station also Talbman / mills / Simon Now Managed by Woodmont but owner unknown
Neat looking mall. It may not be quite dead but it is dying.
Well done. Your videos are very informative.
The architectural style of this mall is so similar to what City Center in Columbus was.
I agree. If you turned the sound off and just watched, there are some moments where you are transported back in time.
Really miss your videos! So happy to see this great video! Hope to see a lot more from your channel!
I hope to film a lot more soon. We had an inter-state move about two months ago, and settling in has taken longer than I expected.
Very informative as per usual, I rather enjoyed the voiceover narration that accompanies the videography. I thought the “Love Boat” style intro was a nice touch. 😁
I'm glad you appreciated it--when I put that crazy intro together I wasn't sure how it was going to be received! Thank you for watching!
