    -- | LYRICS | --
I was twenty four years old when I met the woman I would call my own
Twenty two grand kids now growing old, in the house that your brother brought ya
On the summer day when I proposed, I made that wedding ring from dentist gold
And I asked her father but her daddy said no
    You can’t marry my daughter
She and I went on the run
    Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
    Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
    Down by the Wexford border
Well I met at her Guys in the second world war
She was working on a soldier’s ward
Never had I seen such beauty before
The moment that I saw her
    Nancy was my yellow rose
And we got married wearing borrowed clothes
We got eight children now growing old
    Five sons and three daughters
She and I went on the run
    Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
    Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
    Down by the Wexford border
From her snow white streak in her jet black hair
Over sixty years I’ve been loving her
Now we’re sat by the fire, in our old armchairs
You know Nancy I adore ya
From a farm boy born near Belfast town
I never worried about the king and crown
Cause I found my heart upon the southern ground
There’s no difference, I assure ya
She and I went on the run
    Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
    Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
    Down by the Wexford border

Galway Girl is really fit for loud parties, tons of people and music; but Nancy Mulligan is that song you play at someone’s wedding, or anniversary. Something pure, sweet, simple and honestly romantic. It’s like something from a fantasy movie!

There is actually a video of an Irish News company showing it to the titular Nancy for the first time. Her reaction was "It was fine. As long as I’m not the one playing it.”
Just casual amusement, no thought that her story was now an international hit song. Adorably humble really.

"Nancy Mulligan" is one of the most personal songs on the album, telling the story of how his grandparents, William Sheeran, a Protestant from Belfast, Northern Ireland and Nancy Mulligan (real name Anne Mulligan), a Catholic from Republic of Ireland, met, fell in love during the Second World War and got married at the Wexford border.
Ed Sheeran said: "They got engaged and no one turned up at their wedding. He stole all the gold teeth in his dental surgery and melted them down into a wedding ring, and they wore borrowed clothes to get married, and just basically have this kind of Romeo and Juliet romance, which is like the most romantic thing. So I thought I'd write a song about it and make it a jig."
In an interview with the Irish Times, talking about the song's Irish roots, Ed Sheeran said "I don't think enough people use Irish folk in pop music... Hopefully if these songs are successful, more people will do a bit more like it."

Most people know this is about Ed Sheeran Grandparents and their love story, but did u know that it was based in Ireland (Northern and Republic) and Nancy Mulligan's Father said "no, you can't marry daughter" because William Sheeran was a Protestant from Belfast, Northern Ireland, while Nancy was a Catholic from the Republic of Ireland and currently there were terrorist attacks from both sides.

The love between his grandmother and grandfather might be completely different to the love Ed feels with his many girlfriends. He doesn't understand the circumstances his grandparents were in, or their special connection they had with one another. Love songs are about YOUR past experiences. You can't write about other people's love, no matter how well documented it might be

Especially this song (I'm an American woman with a dad who was half Irish and half Dominican and mom part Indigenous American Indian and part Black American) my parents have both passed away now, and I'm in my 70s still remembering how much love they had for family . You can't stop love even if the religion, color or ethnicity is different , love will have it's way ❤️

Not only does Ed Sheeran write and sing Irish folk songs, acoustic love songs, rock, and rap, he is a one man band most of the time. I've seen him play multiple instruments, beat box, and looping all of the sounds, while singing lead and playing base and rhythm on his guitar simultaneously! The man has genius level of musical talent, and never ceases to amaze me!

Also this remind me of my grandad'parents. But the difference wasn't about religion, it was about monney. He lived in a wealthy family, while she was poor. His dad told him that he didn't want to see him marry a poor girl, and if he does, then he will be rejected from the family and have no money.

The part where it says "she and I went on the run, no care about religion": for those who didn't know this: Protestants and Catholics never normally married in Ireland. The Mulligans were Protestants and the Sheerans were Catholics. But religious factions shouldn't get in the way of love.
And this was at the time that Ed Sheeran's grandparents first met; probably around 1939 or 1940.

@@dominicjamessebastiankrone6690 Yes? But you said "the Mulligan's were Protestants and that the Sheeran's were Catholic." Which is incorrect considering that William SHEERHAN is from Northern Ireland and Nancy MULLIGAN is from the Republic of Ireland.

@@BananaExtremeAwe Okay, so there are a few corrections. You're both right, it's fine. The Sheerans were Protestants and the Mulligans were Catholics, and this song and the love it's dedicated to defied a lot of feuds, as far as I can tell, since this was WWII.

Offensive? Not really. But you're being a bit facetious.
Yes, the context of the song is about a Protestant man marrying a Catholic girl, but that line doesn't specify, and even then, the idea of bucking tradition and family in order to follow your heart isn't unique to Protestants and Catholics, and hell, it doesn't even have to be restricted to religion either.
And while what you said was technically correct, it just comes off as unnecessarily snarky, it's like going into a Chinese restaurant in the US and claiming "WELL, NONE OF THIS IS TECHNICALLY CHINESE FOOD BECAUSE THE INGREDIENTS AND TECHNIQUES USED ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT IS SERVED IN CHINA!"
Yes, we know. But nobody cares, so either sit yourself down and just enjoy, or go be snarky by yourself somewhere else.
