The Elden Ring phenomenon of having video essayists produce half-baked, hypocritical or straight-up just incorrect "critiques" of the game or the DLC in general is a curse that needs to be cured. At the same time, many are simply not pushing back against the wannabe critics in the right way. Most just say "skill issue" or "use the tools" which doesn't fully address their points

The problem with your statement is there are genuine critiques. The other issue is a lot of takes are subjective. That is a subjective opinion but people cant handle those

@austin0_bandit05 There are genuine critiques but you've got Demod's videos that completely ignored them all. Rather than talking about what's actually wrong with the DLC like empty areas or always actually wrong with specific bosses like Radahn the guy just spews random garbage while showing some of the worst gameplay. The genuine criticisms all take a backseat because of the boss design debate

I think emotions are too high right now for any productive discussion to be had.
And in regards to bosses I agree there's a few issues with bosses which is again drowned out by the "git gud" crowd. Ive had arguments with people who defend the cross slash and not a small number of people either.
Compounded by other essayist who were soured on their experience and went all out the other way a la "I had a bad time with Rhadan do everything about the dlc is bad". And then instead of being a discussion about change its a discussion about if it's good or not under the guise of change

I swear to god, every single day a new "critique" video essay appears in my recommended feed, all with thumbnails or titles saying "fromsoft has stagnated" "they lost the plot" "its over for them" "disappointing". And they legit all use the same arguments of so called "unavoidable attacks", "delayed attacks are bad actually", "my build must not be viable", "too much damage, but also exploring is bad and I refuse to use any defensive items in a RPG", and so many more. Can also throw in some people claiming that anyone who enjoys it is basically gaslighting themself, because that sounds totally reasonable.
and worst of all, is that so many of them *claim* to be "souls vets" yet will openly complain about these games being "trial and error" and not wanting to learn bosses. They just put their foot down, refuse to experiment in any way, and say the game must be the problem. I've seen the cycle before and especially remember Armored Core 6 launch with the helicopter boss, but good god it has hit an all time low with the sheer amount of people putting out disingenuous videos within the first month alone. And Joseph Anderson hasn't even made his video yet either 😂

Where’s the hate? Nearly everyone is loving the DLC so much, the Steam reviews 35% of the negative reviews came from China because their versions came with an Anti-Cheat Program that bricked the game, and some others are due to performance issues on PC, the “too-hard” guys are very minor and most of them didn’t even know that there was something called “Scadutree Fragments”, now the discussions have morphed into something else, now it’s time for “honeymoon phase over” so that means you must say the DLC sucks & it’s the worst game ever until a new game by From Software comes out, then Elden Ring will go back to being the greatest game ever made when it slowly approaches the realm of nostalgia, it’s been like that on the internet for years now & it’s freaking annoying lol.

My problem is that all the legitimate criticism just gets drowned out by the complaints of difficulty, and so all the actual issues never see the light of day. I think the major bossfights are fantastic for the most part, but everything else... not so much.
The open world once again is way too big, even worse than the base game, with massive open empty fields comprising the majority of the map, existing for the soul purpose of housing upgrade and crafting materials.
The same awful mini bosses copy pasted all over the place such as the dragons, as well as normal enemies now being elevated to boss status, such as the rune bears, on top of that we also have tons of the npc pvp type bosses which have never been interesting, and I have no idea who wanted to fight these, they're lazy and take next to no effort to implement.
And while this is completely subjective the narrative of the dlc is just garbage imo, feels like bad fanfiction.
I still had fun with the dlc, despite all my issues with it, but it annoys me that all the actual criticism just get buried under the difficulty complaints from people who these games simply weren't made for.

  • @Secularis.
    @Secularis. Месяц назад +4

I will iterate some of the major criticism:
    1) The story is extremely shallow compared to even the base game, way fewer quests (around 3-4 notable quests and about as many just kill 2 enemies get a few lines),
    2) TOO MANY REUSED BOSSES, I swear I defeated 10 drakes this dlc, the same exact boss just placed randomly. The other bosses are almost all reused.
    3) The unique bosses have either no cutscene, the story is extremely half-assed or no build up whatsoever. Many of them are supposed to be these big important bosses but have absolutely no build up nor other lore implications. Compare this to the base game and the build up Godrick gets or the lore around other major bosses.
    4) Difficulty? Is it really a question about difficulty of the game or is it just a problem with extremely precise timings achievable by only certain builds? Most of the game's builds are useless against the dlc bosses to an extent not even Malenia was. Having a game with the most variety of builds and having 90% of those buillds completely shite against the bosses is the epitome of lack of balancing. This is not criticism of the boss design, only lack of balancing for the player's options.
    5) Are the bosses interesting? Are their weaknesses hinted at and preparation for them important? Are their moveset satisfying to dodge and avoid? Pretty much most moves are water fowl dance style "dodge at the exact milisecond it happens in the exact direction it's required". This was a bit interesting on Malenia, as she was a side boss, optional, but here? Yea, absolutely great boss design, lauded for an age to come.
5-addendum) Replayed DS1 and the first 2 bosses had clear weaknesses, the fight was built up and it was beyond satisfying to beat them, were they really difficult? Definitely no, quite easy, but I will not excuse just purely not having fun because it's difficult for the sake of difficulty, ds fans were lauded for liking difficult BUT FAIR fights, not slogs of redoing the same fight 1000 times until you hit all the rngs, all the abilities right, all the dodges at the milisecond they happen.
    6) empty fucken world. I spent more than half the time in the dlc just prancing enormous swathes of empty barren world, as in not even a cemetary or something, or when a structure was present either it was empty or had little inside of it. The Bayle area and the finger areas are the worst, just empty freaking time with literally time wasting searching for stuff that isn't there. Not to mention encountering reused bosses again and again when there actually is something there.
The only places with content similar to the base game are the endgame shadow keep, the ruins to the north and the final area. The rest is severely lacking.
    7) While a bit expected for the progression system to be a flat increase in strength when you get scadutree fragments, it's also the laziest one. The implementation (as a game dev) is literally "make boss one shot people", "make people get scadutree fragments to receive less damage so they don't get one shot", no matter how insanely toxic you can be as an elden ring fan, explain how such a weak and pointless system is "great game design". Artificial difficulty in order to justify a progression.
    8) The main story is weird because there should really have been more interactions with the player according to what ending they're following. How come Midra has nothing to say or nothing special when the player has the frenzied flame? Why is Rellana such a lazy character "Renalla's sister".

    • @Bill_9999
      @Bill_9999 Месяц назад +2

Gonna respond to this with my own response cuz this is interesting.
      1) there are less quests because a lot of the NPCs are involved in the quests overall, and there's a lot of overlap. Like a majority the NPCs are involved in Leda's questline and you as the player are given a multitude of choices which ultimately have meaningful impacts on the final NPC fight. Standalone quests like Ymir, Thiollier, and Igon(and Florissax) are also great; just because there's technically fewer quests does not mean that the DLC is worse because of it, nor did I feel like I was getting robbed of NPC interaction.
      2) there's only 3 drakes lol, 1 at the start of jagged peak and 2 that are fighting each other. I think there's overall 8 dragons in the DLC; 3 drakes, 3 ghostflame, 1 shitty ancient dragon, and Bayle (peak), so not sure where you got 10 identical drakes from . The reuse is far far less egregious than the base game, and every single cave/catacomb features a unique boss, unlike the base game. When bosses are reused there is often an environmental change e.g. the ghostflame dragon fighting messmer's army in scadu altus.
      3) I wholeheartedly agree, only 4 of the 10 remembrance bosses have a cutscene compared to 13 out of 15 of the base game, and honestly only Midra, Bayle, Messmer had any sort of buildup. However I'd argue that their respective buildups completely overshadow anything in the base game.
      4) I've tried colossal weapons against all the bosses in the DLC and they are all fine to fight with; they all have openings for charged R2's even the shitfest that radahn is. If these slow ass weapons can be used against the DLC bosses, then so can pretty much any weapon, so if your build is useless against the DLC bosses then your build is probably poorly optimised which is definitely not the game's fault.
      5) There are awful moves that some of the bosses do, e.g. metyr's double laser attack or radahns cross slash, but otherwise yes the bosses are interesting, yes they have moves that are difficult to dodge but no move is an unintuive to dodge as waterfowl was for Malenia. You overexaggerate the precision required to execute many of the rolls, it's certainly not "exact millisecond". Yes some moves can only be dodged in certain directions, which adds another layer to the combat as positioning is emphasised more than ever, a natural progression of the boss design from ds3; and quite frankly I am glad they are still deciding to evolve with boss design because it would get boring reaaaal quick otherwise. I promise you that they are manageable to learn, and with the correct mindset are incredibly fun. Are the bosses difficult? Of course they are. But this is endgame DLC content; I'd be disappointed if they weren't.
      6) Of all your criticisms this is the one I agree with the most. Cerulean Coast, Chairos Hidden Grave and Abyssal woods are all empty af. The worst area was the finger ruins, literally waste of surface area. I do think the rest of the areas are fine and a step up from the base game; there's a good amount of stuff to do in gravesite plain and scadu altus too. And I can excuse Jagged Peak because it is very clearly a linear journey and not open like the others, and it is all ultimately buildup to a fantastic boss.
7)Bosses do a lot of damage without scadutree blessing as a means of encouraging exploration, similar to Margit in base game. But I do agree that the scadutree fragments were horribly implemented. They are interesting for the fact that they introduce progression to a DLC where none existed for previous from DLCs, but having your entire difficulty experience rely on one single item is terrible design. with Margit there were multiple ways to get stronger, whether that be upgrading tools or levelling up or findings new ashes of war or spirit ashes or golden seeds/tears, but here levelling up is kinda useless and your build is probably already perfect, and having players go on a fetch quest to collect a bunch of fragments is awful considering they are not in excess like golden seeds.
      8) Another criticism I agree with, but I think it was an intentional choice by from to make the base game and DLC almost completely separate. no idea why tho, would've liked if Gideon had something to say about all this or smth.

    • @jerrysberrysgame

You know what. Props to you for formulating a very well thought out response with valid points. As said by Bill I do agree with your point 6 that the areas do feel kind of empty when traveling between places at times. However I think the reason it feels empty is because a lot of people complained that every major area has a site of grace in Elden Ring. This is also the same as we see in the DLC. To me it looks like they took the approach of keeping graces at major areas but making less of them so it feels a lot emptier than base game.
I actually had a little quip about Rellana being a lazy ass name and shoehorn in my draft but decided to cut it due to it not feeling like it would flow anywhere in particular.

    • @Secularis.
      @Secularis. Месяц назад

      @@Bill_9999 I think I need to explain myself a bit about points 1, 2 and 5.
      1) Pretty much what feels the most lacking since I started another playthrough of the base game are actual side quests of random people you find in random rooms, almost every place has them in the base game, from a random servant that has a few lines and sells you some useless stuff to a dude that steals your runes when you are in the area, I mean, this flavor is almost completely lost in the dlc, it's cool and all to have a major questline with a few npcs, I actually liked it alot, but it lacked that "part of the world " experience.
      2) I am counting the base game too, since you say there's only 6 drakes well, we all fought 12 or more in the base game, while you might say that a new ability justifies the inclusion of the same boss again, or that a reskin makes it new (ghostflame). they all still feel the same. Yes, Bayle is an awesome boss, Bayle, Midra and Messmer are my favorite bosses in the dlc by far, lorewise and in-game. Still, I am so damn tired of fighting drakes it's ridiculous, I barely have to pay attention to the fight at this poing, just go in, walk the tail for 1 min, done. It's boring af. The ancient dragon is reused too, what, the fifth time we kill one?
      5) I defeated all the bosses save 1, Radahn, I did optimise my build the whole game till then. I ask, how did you defeat if you did so, Gaius and Radahn? Colossal weapons for them seems weird. After 50 or so attempts I defeated Gaius and felt shitty af after that fight. I went in at Radahn, did almost 30 attempts and it just drained me, my build was doing barely anything (Str-faith godskin build), tried 3 other builds, and it was just infuriating, and really, does it justify one single boss that much commitment to become so much better, for what? There are no other bosses after this one, most my abilities are useless, 99% of all incantations are too slow to cast on Radahn or useless just because of their long cast time, I have no idea how someone can fight him with colossal weapons without going for the cheese jump double colossal attacks, really

My main problem with Elden Ring is that Fromsoftware seem to have forgotten some of their design principles with this game.
At times it felt like they were making things hard for the sake of making them hard and annoying, something that never really was the reason why people loved souls, and the difficulty spikes were really erratic throughout the game.
Most of the time I got stuck not because I couldn't see a pattern in a boss or because I was underleveled, but because I was overwhelmed fighting two huge bosses in a tiny boss room at the same time.
To be fair, Miyazaki also said that they designed many aspects of the game around summoning or ghost ashes, but still... dual bosses in a tiny room is just lazy design in my opinion.
With the DLC I feel like they have taken the most annoying elements of the base game and amplified them. Even with the upgrade fragments, which I'm not a fan of in the first place.
Elden Ring is still a great game, but I'm tired of pretending it's a flawless masterpiece, especially the new DLC.

"Play the game however you want"
Except you can't. Because the bosses are not designed to be defeated with any playstyle they are design to be defeated with only 3 playstyles and if you don't like those too bad for you. And people who say these bosses are good have no idea what makes a hard boss good. Visual clutter is not good. Shit camera is not good. Double the HP bar and triple damage is not good. Punishing the player for respecting the basic formula of a fight and forcing them to disengage is not good.
This DLC feels like a fanmod similar to how the Unalloyed Malenia mod was, where if we add more random bullshit, more aoe, and more visual clutter then surely the boss will be good cuz it's hard.
Anyway, I'm glad I pirated this first and didn't spend any money on it because it does not deserve any money and even the mixed review score on steam is way too high for it.

@harrylane4 Elden Ring was meant to be "newb's first souls game", but the devs huffed their last bit of dark souls 2 dust and overdesigned things a bunch in reaction to the growing skill and knowledge of the playerbase.
Aggressive bosses, good. Bosses with lots of health good. Bosses with lots of particles, good. Boss that don't stagger, good. Bosses that hit hard, good. Bosses with long attack combbos, good. Bosses with all of the above? Terrible.
Numbers weren't the issue, it was everything combined.

Almost every playstyle in this game is viable if you build correctly and understand the movement mechanics of the game instead of just defaulting to roll roll roll r1. Folks complaining about ER aren't "respecting the basic formula" of anything, they're just being complacent and refusing to adapt.

Saying the criticisms are simply about difficulty is a very shallow understanding about the actual discussion. A lot of people are getting tired of trading interesting combat for spectacle and cheap ways of creating difficulty.

Elden Ring is the only Souls game that actually incentivises the use of the entire moveset. It has the most interesting combat of any of these games. The bosses in the DLC with the exception of the last boss are extremely well-tuned, and some of them probably under-tuned if we're being honest.
