Marriott's primary customer is big business. When you fly thousands of employees to various locations daily its more convenient to the company to stick with one or a few super chains. That's the reason they can continue hamfisting in fees even after the fact that they're already more expensive than surrounding hotels from smaller chains - they're playing the same balancing act with corporate beancounters as the healthcare industry does with insurance.
Marriott doesn't really have too many fees outside of parking (other than actual resort fees). I've only ever seen the occasional $5-$10 fee, and that is maybe at 10% of hotels.
It's not just Marriott. Had a Bally's hotel in Atlantic City tell me they now have a resort fee. It ain't no resort. So I questioned the fee. They barely have a pool. It's opened a couple of days per week for a few hours! Other than that, fee covers wifi. LOL It was a scam.
That's not actually how corporate rates work. Depending on scale, companies can negotiate with hotel corporate services. The rates are usually much better than booking retail. There's also things that can be negotiated in such as airport transfers and breakfast. Some hotels have corporate floors and lounges as well. 15 or so years ago a club room at the Marriott in most major cities was around 70 USD per night on our corporate rate. These days it's around 150-250...
Part of the concept behind a "resort" or "destination" fee is to dodge the "occupancy" tax. The occupancy tax applies only to the part of the bill that for the "hotel room" and not the resort or destination fee. My son recently went to Circus Circus in Las Vegas. The room should have been about $100 a night. $35 was for the room (+13% occupancy tax) and $65 was resort fee (0 tax) for $104.55 after tax. If it had all been for the room, it would have been $113.

$35 as credit for food. Implies you can offset the final bill by $35, making you bind to their kitchen as you have the credit. Imagine a cup of coffee outside maybe $3, in the hotel you need to pay $4, but the price if offset, giving you the feeling of not paying anything but in reality you have paid for it already, technically payed more than you should have for a cup of coffee.
@@assh2961is it those shitty convenience fees and online service fees. Like bake it into the price or don’t charge me. I hate it when movies and concerts charge this. Most people buy tickets online damn it.
Yeah this is why I pretty much only book with Marriott when I’ve got an excess of points and there’s either a good transfer promotion or Amex travel has a promotion. Since regardless it’s infinitely better value for my Amex points that I’d only get 70% of the value as statement credits. So I just let them accumulate as I don’t do travel or hotel stays that often, but when I do it usually is a pretty solid value. Just booked two nights in a solid suite for several concerts in Denver and only used less than half of my sign up bonus points. Otherwise I avoid hotels whenever possible, but so far this strat has been working for me.
Not nearly as bad as timeshares though 😅. You can't even give them away and they will charge you whatever they want for service fees, increasing yearly
I was at a Bonvoy this year at San Antonio and this didn’t exist and in fact Amex gave $100 credit for their bar and restaurant, granted it was still 350
Just refuse to pay it. By the time you get there a contract is in place for an agreed amount. If they won't honour that contract it's on them but if you accept the extra charge it's on you.

I stay at Hyatt, they do the same thing. I take full advantage of the point system. I book off season, most of the time. resort fees are completely different from state and city taxes. These are additional fees imposed by that particular hotel supposedly for the upkeep of the amenities like, pools, etc. That should be INCLUDED in the room rate. Also charging extra for internet nowadays seems to be ridiculous. Sure, maintaining WiFi network costs money, but not $10/day per room. In reality only the more expensive hotels add those fees. Cheap hotels always have free WiFi.
Marriott tries to give you bad service at their hotels, not a good brand when it comes to customer care or even value for money. Experience Kolkata, India 🇮🇳
Resort by definition is "a place that is a popular destination for vacations or recreation." A hotel is technically that, especially if this is in an area that has a high rate of tourism. However, I live in Florida, so a lot of places here are "popular destinations for vacation". However, I've also stayed at many hotels in Florida that doesn't have this fee, because well, they weren't "popular designations for vacation". I don't think it's a justified fee, but just wanted to point out it's not as if they have these fees anywhere and everywhere. If that was the case, every hotel in FL would do this and they don't, as Florida itself you can argue as a whole a huge "popular designation". It just feels like a "scam", especially if you're at a place that has a lot less benefits.
I work in hospitality as a Director, I highly dislike the idea of a destination fee for our guests! I don’t want the hospitality industry to loose its hospitality!

This is why I love that we can use the federal rate for vacations if the hotel allows it. They're not allowed to tack on additional fees to that rate! At like half of my hotels this year, the desk agent started in with the resort/destination/amenity fee spiel, paused, and then said "oh, no, you're good. It's just the {stated rate} plus taxes." "Yes, I know, thank you!" Bonus that the rate is usually lower than public rates!
@@sujimtangerines Sort of. If you work for the US federal government (sometimes also works for state/local) AND THE HOTEL ALLOWS IT, you can book *one* room at that rate for personal travel. BTW we didn't get food vouchers either 😡
It’s so they can advertise “only $25 per night!” Then the other $80 is fees.
We encountered this at the Marriott Long Beach Downtown last weekend. Overall, it worked out because we had reason to utilize the hotel restaurants and stores.
But it was sprung on us as a surprise. During the reservation process, there was a lot of fine print -- the possibility of a "resort fee'" was cited, but not made clear.
Again, things worked out --but next time we do Marriott, we'll be more cautious.
I was a doorman there when it was a Ramada Renaissance.
Opened the hotel.
It had valet parking, a waterfall by the front door, and me the doorman.
No resort fee.

I didn't work out. If you held the cash you still could have spent it. Legat tender is only voucher worth having
Marriot brings back terrible memories of the glass door shattering on me.
frick you marriot, at least I got 5k compensation
Yasss love it you got the coin
All these hidden fees, taxes and tips is exactly why I don't want to go on holiday in the US anymore.
Just make a law that no matter how much they wiggle they can't charge more than shown in advertisement / booking and even then only the clearly stated price, no small print or anything like that.
Just make a law...😂😂😂..do you realize how long it took the Airlines to set a final fee in America? Even now with Porter in Canada, you got ticket, then seat, luggage, gst, local tx...yes, notice..seat. I'll take the bench in the back.

As a Marriott employee, we know this is total bs and a hella pain in the ass for us as well to settle the resort credit in the F&B outlets.
This is why I stay at budget hotels (i.e.: Motel 6, Super 8, La Quinta, etc.)

I can’t stand these fees, they have them all over the Las Vegas strip hotels
It sucks, but they are resorts, no?
In some ways this is even worse than the usual run-of-the-mill junk fee as it reduces the competitive opportunities of nearby independent businesses.
How can we as customers push back on these junk fees?
Very easily, boycotting except people won't do it bc they need pics for social media and the companies know this. Boycotting for JUST 2 quarters and companies will feel it.
@floryder8385 lmao pics can come from anywhere! Plenty of nice places to take pics FOR FREE! Lmao, hell, book Days Inn, walk down the street, stand in front of Mariott and take pics if you want Mariott in pics that bad for some reason! 😂😂😂

That’s why you book with Hyatt through the Chase rewards program😉
This is the primary reason why my hotel hates when the websites list our security deposit which is refundable as a resort fee.
Ngl, $35 a day for food isn’t that bad if you’re on vacation. And hotel food at 5 star hotels isn’t actually that bad. If it can be used at the bar, it’s kind of cool, imo.
Still dumb that you have to use it all at the Marriott. I’d like to try the local food while I’m out.
$35 as credit for food. Implies you can offset the final bill by $35, making you bind to their kitchen as you have the credit. Imagine a cup of coffee outside maybe $3, in the hotel you need to pay $4, but the price if offset, giving you the feeling of not paying anything but in reality you have paid for it already, technically payed more than you should have for a cup of coffee.
that's why I don't like Vegas. My $40 room becomes $140 a night, makes no sense at all when booking online.
@@assh2961is it those shitty convenience fees and online service fees. Like bake it into the price or don’t charge me.

Cancelled my Aug vacation to Palm Springs because of a scam like this
Lol, yep got me in NY with this one
scam = don’t use plastic.
So how do you get out of paying the destination fee?
What about all the extra fees that car rental companies charge?
Someone told me , for walk in's ... they waive the fee.
I was at a Bonvoy this year at San Antonio and this didn’t exist and in fact Amex gave $100 credit for their bar and restaurant, granted it was still 350
I hate resort fees! And in Florida they just lie, and you dont find out about it until you get there!
lol I got the fix for that - don't go to Florida. Not worth it anyway.
Just refuse to pay it. By the time you get there a contract is in place for an agreed amount. If they won't honour that contract it's on them but if you accept the extra charge it's on you.
Yeah, reps aren't going to fix that either
I see this on rental cars as well could you explain what a facility fee is for. Why should I pay to keep their lights on
Guyz I wanted to book a room in Orlondo and I saw a city tax of 200+fee , why is that, I was in another state before I wasn't charged such a number.
Moral of the Story: Never stay at a chain hotel...
Moral of the story, we stand together and demand these corporations adhere to reasonable rules.

Marriott's biggest customer is the fed gov, which puts all of the "refugees" up in there.
This comment is factually incorrect.
The federal government has never booked a single refugee into a hotel, ever.
There are no hospitaliy companies with *federal* contacts to house refugees or migrants.
Refugee housing arrangements are made by state and local governments and contracted non- governmental organizations.

And they count on the fact a lot of folks will forget about their restaurant credit. On top of that assumption, they upcharge everything by 30%
And hotel prices are like "One cold 250 ml glass of Coke, 50 $".
What's first in this is all of those apps that show you hotels in your area and they'll list a certain price but when you book the hotel you don't find out till you get to the hotel that there's a $300 deposit required and the room booking is non-refundable so if you don't have $300 you're just basically sleeping outside for the night
Okay here's the real world if you ever say this to the guy behind the desk. "I don't know why it's there I just work here okay."
I like how the explanation at the end is cut off. Super helpful.
70$ on food credit costs the company like 10$ thas crazy

Spot it? You explained the entire thing in full detail.
Hotel quoted me $155 a night. When I went to book she said it was $795. I told her I have been out of school a long time but I’m sure 155 + 155 doesn’t equal 795. Then she says oh we have a resort fee. I told her to forget it.
No. The "resort fees" didn't cause a 256% increase in the total cost of the room.
I stay at Hyatt, they do the same thing. I take full advantage of the point system. I book off season, most of the time.
After a year, say that even though i spend 10,000, it's really only 3,500 for lodging at the end of the year because of being frugal with what hotels i choose, how i use points.
I also travel a lot, and I spend very little on travel lodging overall. Im now the top-tier globalist, so i have 4pm checkout and free breakfast.
If you travel a lot and are not boujie, you can end up coming out ahead. 🙏
how do u get into this point system
Yep experienced that even tho I spend 6 days a week in hotels. Off my stop list.
Also, they will charge you $8 for a can of soda they paid 35 cents for.
I am always amazed how in the US, upcharges are actually legal. It's obviously a form of fraud to advertise something other than the final price, so how do companies get away with it?
Because America sucks
Americans have been brainwashed into thinking all govt regulation is communism and a gateway to authoritarianism.
It's amazing how much abuse we'll take and never fight back. Capitalists have pacified us with racism, nationalism, patriotism, religion and hatred. Every exploit of capitalists is believed to be the "liberal elite" and reps would do anything that hurts themselves, if it hurts liberals or minorities more.
We get exploited repeatedly because that's the price of Freedom. Lol
Resort Fees are usually taxes imposed by municipalities but usually it is a low amount required that hotels just charge as much as they want for.
resort fees are completely different from state and city taxes.

Is it a job perk or something, this Federal Rate?
@@sujimtangerines Sort of. If you work for the US federal government (sometimes also works for state/local) AND THE HOTEL ALLOWS IT, you can book *one* room at that rate for personal travel. Not all hotels allow that (some require you to be on "official" or work travel to get the government rate), you can only get one room (so you can't book out a whole block for you and friends), and you must be present and show your work ID to check in (so you can't book for someone else). The government doesn't pay anything for it, it's just a perk that some hotels choose to extend, like a AAA or club rate.
@toda2638 That's cool. It's good business practice for the hotel bc it's in their best interest for you to NOT visit & like another hotel/chain (threatening future revenue if enough people want to book the work trips at this other place y'all stayed at on vacation).
I'm all for taking advantage of whatever discounts are available. From the credit card bonus & points, to AAA & AARP, plus the BF's military status and even my phone carrier perks... if I'm paying for ANYTHING, I check for a discount thru everything... now, if I ever make a govt employee friend, I'll have to get them to look.
