- Here is Arbans Charactaristic Study #3. This one has a few bleeps in it also, but it turned out pretty good. I am posting this in response to some of my students. You also, must excuse some of the skips that the video camera on my phone made, but it will at least give you an idea of how it should be played. I assure you this was done in one take. I am playing this Characteristic, as well as #1 and #2 that I have previously posted, on a Callet Sima trumpet with the superchops 3 mouthpiece. All using the TCE/Callet method of playing the trumpet.

THe answer to your question is yes. You can play with it either on top or behind, but the most important part is that the tongue is forward between the teeth connected to the bottom lip creating a direct path for the air to go over the tongue through the top teeth, or rather just under the top teeth if you don't have a gap and directly into the mouthpiece. wow man... you're a very fine trumpet player! you have very solid technique and flexibility and you played the hell out of that study too! my only advice for you is have a little more fun with the study and try to make it sounds a little more musical. don't get me wrong, it sounds wonderful but it would sound 10 times better if you imagined yourself singing every note and emulate that through your instrument. you'd be surprised what that could do for you.

TCE is the best I bought trumpet secrets and never looked back. Say, how is that mouthpiece, the superchops 3 im thinking of getting one?

You're attack & playing are really amazing here.
I wish more orchestral trumpet players could play this way...then many orchestras would have sounded much better...

Hey! I need help for a college audition. The college requires a fast and slow etude from the arbans book. I already have my fast one, but I'm not sure what to do for the slow one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all of your time.
when you use tce, do you play with your tongue on top of bottom lip or over the bottom teeth and behind the bottom lip? thanks!
@windensemble14 I agree with you. The tone is clearly not muffled - the mic is just not very hi-fi. The thing to listen for is the pop in the tonguing and in the slurs. Those things only exist in the presence of a brilliant tone.
