    Nice. I did the mod on my controller but I used a USB C female to USB 2.0 male adapter which I disassembled to use the board itself (long story short, I can't import anything in my country so I can't buy that PCB, and breakout boards aren't sold here either), and for the bezel (which luckily I managed to have someone 3D print for me) I used super glue to keep the port in place, not the most elegant solution to be sure, but it seems to work just fine like that for now.

      That's probably for the best, the rigid connection seems to be unreliable on the custom boards with the edge ports

    Awesome!
    I noticed in your video description that there are updated board revisions and that you reflowed some solder to fix an issue on your current board. Could you do a follow-up with the new board and your thoughts on it as well as your thoughts on the controller in this video after you reflowed the solder?
    I plan on doing this myself, as I'm sure many of us would like to, and your thoughts would help as a guide!

    • @makho
      @makho  4 года назад

      The issue with the new boards is that my 3D printed bezel won't work and it would have to be modified. I also made the bezel in tinkercad (I use an actual CAD suite now) and I just really can't be fucked to fix it. Maybe eventually but it's not something I have planned soon.

    Heya! Great job and great video, I was wondering if you could help me out with something - I'm trying to repair and modify a used controller, but after opening it I noticed that the copper on the PCB is gone. I was thinking of just using jumper cables, but I don't really know what TPs to connect them to. Ground is easy enough to find, but I don't really have any idea for the rest. The board you're working on seems the same, do you happen to know if there are TP spots for the USB data lines?

    Did you have to cut away part of the housing at all? The round part of the 3d printed bezel doesnt slide all the way down into the housing. I also noticed the hole of the little notch it slides into is narrower than a usb-c port so I think it would need to be cut regardless.

    • @makho

    Hey, Im trying to follow your tutorial, but its a bit late to ask now that I’ve ordered everything… about the thickness of the board (1.4 vs 0.8 mm), is there any parameters on the website that one should be aware of? And about the ali express order, when you talk about the ones that "straddle the edge of a board" you mean the ones with the tiny bit on board behind it right ? But anyways, thanks for this tutorial, it’s good to see that people are / were still on those devices in recent years.

    • @makho

      no, not at all. You need bare ports for this if you're using the adapter board.

    Any chance of an updated video on the 1.4 version of the PCB + the new USB-C port part? I got the parts in but am hesitant to proceed without better instructions than the ones in the README. Or do you think this video would be a good enough guide? Have not watched it all the way yet since it's for a different version of the mod.

    • @makho
      @makho  Год назад

      I don't intend on revisiting this at any point. v1.4 should be a lot easier to solder together and a lot more reliable due to how the port connects to the board but should be about the same. I don't know if my bezel fits as is.
      My motivation to work on this has been all but destroyed ever since microsoft started putting USB C ports on their xbox series controllers. It's a better controller with better compatibility and it comes with type-c out of the box.

    • @SoundToxin
      @SoundToxin Год назад

      @@makho Fair enough if you had PC usage in mind. My intent was to use the controller(s) with an actual Xbox 360. I did do the RGH 3 mod to several of them and enable the usbdsec patch so I can use unauthorized controllers, but for some reason the Xbox Series and Xbox One controllers still don't work unless I use a Magic NS 2 adapter. My Gulikit controller and a few others in xinput mode work without that adapter after the mod (they probably pretend to be an actual 360 controller which might help).
      My hope was also to prepare something cheap in bulk so I could prepare enough 360 controllers for 2-4 people besides myself for a semi-public setup. A USB-C port would be ideal because we were already using Flatbox controllers along with 10ft USB-C to A cables and unplugging/passing them when the person playing changed. I basically wanted to leave those same cables plugged in and have a more traditional controller than the Flatbox for when we're not playing fighting games so it would still be easy to pass the cable around without walking up to the console (and without anyone having to share controllers).
      I did end up giving the mod a try and had a pretty terrible time, so I put it on hold for now. I was just getting no signs of life when I hooked it up to a PC to test. At first I thought I soldered the C end wrong, but it might've actually been the pin headers since the example install picture on GitHub has them in an unusual spot compared to how I'm used to seeing pin headers used (like in keyboard builds), and I only soldered in half the spots I should've. In trying to get them back off to redo I tore the conductive area around 2/4 of the USB connector holes. One was a GND I could've maybe re-routed, but the other was one of the data pins. This was at least a broken controller I was working on, but now I'm hesitant to try it again on another controller.
      Sorry for the wall of text. Anyway, I'm probably gonna have to give up on this unless a decent guide pops up for me to follow, unfortunately. I still hadn't watched your video all the way through so I might still do that one of these days if it's similar enough of a process.

    • @makho

      USB C is physically bigger so you'd have to make room if you are replacing the port.

    • @MojojoJenkins
      @MojojoJenkins 4 года назад +1

      @@makho Do you mean that the mini USB port itself is larger than the USB C port; strictly port to port? Or are you including a breakout conversion board or something that would be necessary like in this 360 controller video you did?

    • @makho

    11:46 i think i just made the same mistake you did, ordered the thicker boards. But still haven't got them with me, so... is it worth even trying with a 1.6mm instead of a 0.8mm?
    [EDIT: No. What he meant was the fit inside of the board. Prior version was a perfect rectangular shape (11:41), plus the thickness. So getting a standard 1.6 should be OK, and not a problem.]
    (Note to self)
    37:40 v1.4 is a slightly different joint with the female USBC port...

    58:50 Once the piece is soldered together, it's required to check the connection with a multimeter. Magic Number is 600ish ohms, which should be the correct voltage for this particular controller. None of them should be shorted.

      Plugged it in, worked perfectly. The bezel needed adjustment so i did a Tinkercad and remixed it from the old model at your thingiverse post, that might need some filing work. 0.8mm boards are actually much much better for this mod, as closing the controller back together is already tight with the 0.8mm. So in case you got the thicker ones, it's best to ditch those and order the 0.8mm. Do not touch the 4pins, they're not cuttable.
      The usb pads on these controllers are dumb easy to lift and break. Once you get this PCB in place, there's no turning back... So lucky i had a spare one to do several attempts with, now i gotta figure out how to fix it with the USB traces and jumperwires.
