Thank you so much for doing this video. Carissa is my daughter and it has been hard not being able to come on this journey with them because of Covid. So hopeful to be out in June fingers crossed.
The amount of people moving to Portugal recently is insane, and those are only the ones I can see because of RUclips... I imagine a lot more are interested in living here, its very interesting seeing it. Thanks for sharing :)
Acho que os portugueses adoram o mar e por isso cada vez mais procuram viver perto da costa marítima e quem aproveita são os estrangeiros que compram hectares de terra no interior do país a um preço muito baixo.
Portugal is truly a Big small Country,Mountainscapes, and Seascapes, there's a great diversity in natural Landscapes...it's really a Paradise by the Atlantic Ocean !...
Ken - what an outro! The natural ambient sounds and an overview of their little piece of tranquility -- that shot really said it all. Beautifully composed, well done.
Lovely video and story!! Don't forget to celebrate our now yours 25 of April !! We tend to take it for guaranteed but, this is absolutely not true. Enjoy the lovely weather and the freedom of your journey!!!
I love how it seems in Portugal that the neighbours welcome new people to the area, in the countryside at least. Such a change from Japan, where it's on you to go and knock on the neighbours and give them a towel and introduce yourself, and mostly they don't actually want to know you - it's just a ritual with no heart. What a brilliant way to encourage you to work on your Portuguese and make you feel at home.
The neighbours have been incredible here. We have visited Japan and absolutely loved it, the people were very friendly and kind too. I think if we hadn’t moved to Portugal we would have been tempted to move to Japan! Such a beautiful country
In that region it's actually a tradition for people to bring newcomers or vacationers some of their produce, because they know you didn't have time to start growing your own food and they usually produce plenty, counting with that tradition aleady. My ancestors are all from that region...
One reason is they actually like to have more people around, life is kind if lonely when most of your kids, friends or relatives immigrated. They are also very curious people and like to know how and what everyone is doing, because, after all, not much happens in villages or the countryside, at least not visibly, for the less observant (lots happens in the nature around us, everyday, if we just take the time to observe... 🙂)
@@grandmasstories3418 Thank you. I really liked how you described the concept of not much happening to some when in nature a lot is happening if we slow down to take notice.
Your best interview so far Ken. Have been following Carissa and Iwan, you did not mention their RUclips channel (3350) Frankie On The Road - RUclips . They have made some good choices with their land, so humble. Power to their elbow.
What an absolutely lovely couple. So real and unpretentious. Their attitude is exemplary and the fact that they are prepared to learn, at a relaxed pace, as they go will hold them in great stead for the future. I wish them love and good fortune for their exciting times ahead.
The most amazing thing of the video is at the 2:30 that 2 bottles with one liter of beer (duas litrosas Sagres) that stand better than those involved in the video.
The story about roses being planted near the vineyards is true, they are used to detect diseases that can attack the vines. Here in my region (in the north), red roses are planted at the top of each row of vines.
Love you interviews OkPortugal. Such a pleasure to watch you and learn so much about the agricultural habitats and opportunities in central Portugal. Lovely couple here living wisely using Permaculture principles to live in the area. They have done so much in 5 months to make their small abode very livable. Thank you!
What lovely a couple! I look forward to seeing more of them and their land - I love what they are doing with it so far - and Carissa is obviously talented having demonstrated as much with your logo

Hey Mark, great idea. Ive been thinking on doing a nature series of the Gardunha or Serra da Estrela mountains and to just go there everyday for a season to film all the nature and find a story.
What a lovely young couple. What a great plot of land...so much potential! You spoke with them about pointing the stone work. I've seen a few folks struggling with deep recesses and a small pointing trowel. I don't know it your mortar products can be thinned or if they require a stiff mix. Enter the mortar bag. It works like a large frosting piping bag. If the products allow for a stiff but creamy mortar mix...the bags can be used to rapidly fill deep crevices between the rock. With a small amount of sewing ability, bags can be made from cheap, heavy vinyl tarps. Once the mortar is in place, a little troweling easily sets it in place. If the mix is proper consistency, very little is wasted plopping on the floor. Good luck and thanks so much for the great content.
22:50 The snub-nosed vipers are the only venomous snakes in Portugal (they can kill humans, but it's very rare, rush to hospital if you get bitten). They are hard to find because they are shy and like to hide under rocks, but they are all over Portugal. Some people think they only live up in the mountains of northern/central Portugal, which is not true. Close to Lisbon, in Sintra and Mafra for example, there's a few of them :D
Yes you are correct , in the wikipedia page show they live in all Iberian Peninsula and even in north Africa, their real scientific name is "Vipera latastei" in Portuguese is "Víbora cornuda" (they are very small only reach maximum 70 cm) and last week another human ( i do think is the first this year) was bitten in Constância and this village is far from being in north or a mountain area. they hate to use their venom in humans they need their precious venom to catch the mouses.
@Sacred Rebel Why? From the statistic numbers only one old men lost his life and was about 30 years ago. A boy was in coma for 3 days in 2019, but if you are bitten by the snake you need to go to the hospital. In Portugal there are no predators that kill human, no poison animals (only this small viper max. 70cm). Even the wild boars in Portugal dont attack humans like in other places. ruclips.net/video/ElAanE_Vb7A/видео.html
There are two greens in the region that survive the winter frost: their Portuguese names are couve and nabiças. You can make delicious soups with them. The "couve" makes the "caldo verde", the most typical soup in that region...
About that well... I know Iwan is a climber but, if you were to tie a rope to one of the near by trees and hang it into the well with a bucket on the end... If a non-climber was to fall in they would have half a chance of getting out, and the bucket would come in handy as well, no pun intended... Safety & practicality! Great interview and a lovely introduction to Crissa & Iwan's set up & farm life... And what a very natural presenter Carissa seems to be... Muito bom!
I think they can extend a bit of the original building as well, don´t recall the exact amount but they can ask the architect or town hall. Actually, Ken there are 2 venenous snakes in Portugal that can pose threat to small children and old people but usually aside from the pain, swelling and discomfort it won´t kill you, I would fear more those invading Asian wasps (killed several ppl in Portugal and across Europe already) rather than the snakes, also sometimes when you lift a rock in the countryside you can encounter the local species of small scorpions or the blind snake (this one only dangerous when you pick them up, their skin releases poison) that won't kill you but can ruin your day. Those tank cracks can be easily fixed if they want, there is a silicone-based paint designed for cement pools by Sika that lasts for a very long time and it´s very easy to apply, just painted on the inside of the tank after repairing the cracks with the pool sealant and that´s it, it´s a cheap fix and if you want to prevent natural or artificial stone, facades, walls, tiles to gain those dark or green spots that alter the look of the stone you can Sika impermeabilizing silicone water repellent agent using a spray, their products are a bit expensive but with tremendous quality. Btw How is Gina doing, hope she´s better.

This is true, this winter was the most cold i remember at least for the last 10 years of more. And in Fundão the winters can go way bellow 0º at least in January or even in the end of December.
You probably need a wood stove or a fireplace, before winter... definitely! Every house in that region has one. Well, a gas heater is nice too, but nothing like sitting around the fire in the evenings.... the best part of winter in that region... 🙂

Hope Gina's leg is healing well!!
I lived in a house with a big pool that also was cracked and a friend solved it with just some tubes of this paste that comes in two different tubes (like toothpaste tubes) and when you put them together, the mixture hardens. You could also put a metal strip around it to keep the walls from splitting. A water tank is a great thing to have to refresh, in the 40°C summers in the region...
Dang, what a perfect little plot! 😍 I can’t wait to be able to travel again, RUclips helps to calm down the wanderlust...🧳 When I saw the open air wells, all I could think is, please put in little ramps (and/or a little floating piece of board they can climb onto) in case hedgehogs fall in! 🦔🤗

... also, those tanks were used to press the grapes by foot (if they have a tap on one side) and to later put all the olives before taking them to the communal press
Don't crack up the reservoir. You can turn it into a plunge pool to survive the heat of the summer. Check out the Indie Project. They too are in central Portugal and renovating an old barn into a home. It could provide you with ideas and information.
I would think if they started growing clover on the land, it would help to bring back healthy soil. I watch another video were the owner was growing clover in her orchards. She stated that the growing clover has help not only the soil but also the trees. When the clover blooms, it's beautiful. Also provides a beautiful ground cover providing many benefits to the land.

Get ready for the hot weather. It's, in my opinion, worst then the winter time! If it's sheltered from the wind, maybe you should think about a way to refresh yourself through the summer months.
@@FrankieOffGrid You need to change the asbestos roof (not good for health), make some investment in the roof and because the building is stone with a good roof you can be prepared to August hot days (some days can reach 40ºC). I know Alcains, where is your land you going to have water all the summer because my father girlfriend was from Escalos (close of Alcains) and their well never run out of water in summer. But the dry hot days with very low humidity can be hard.
Looks like an apple tree that was growing from the ground there. What happens if u aerate the well? Would that stop algae from growing there or would it make it worse? How much did u guys give for the property? How big is it?

The couple you interviewed can use the duckweed as a fertilizer, for feed for chickens and pigs, and can be added to compost.
I was thinking the same thing 😊
Duckweed is also locking in the nutrients that othewise would feed algae blooms_ then compost or feed the animals.

Get ready for the hot weather. It's, in my opinion, worst then the winter time! If it's sheltered from the wind, maybe you should think about a way to refresh yourself through the summer months.
Yes we’re a bit nervous for the summer heat! Luckily the dam is close by, think we will spend a lot of time there
@@FrankieOffGrid You need to change the asbestos roof (not good for health), make some investment in the roof and because the building is stone with a good roof you can be prepared to August hot days (some days can reach 40ºC).
How big is it?
hello, these lands are good for planting watermelon too.
