My favorite TV shows based on a movie are RoboCop: The Series from 1994, F/X: The Series from 96 to 98 and Clerks: The Animated Series. I also like Alien Nation, Tremors and Police Academy.
Robocop the series was good, I think they did pretty good adapting for TV, sure the violence had to be toned down, but they did their best to keep the social/political commentary of privatizing and exploitation for profit and Murphy exploring his humanity as basically a ghost in a robot shell, mourning that he couldn't return to his family.
@Omegall RoboCop the series was a watered down disgrace of a show that ironically exploited the 87 film for profit. Everyone involved with that show should be ashamed.
(Thinking about Legion and Dominion.) Despite its copious failings, my favorite evil angel movie is still The Prophecy. "Did you ever notice how in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, He sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"
Eyyy, the Australian-rated copies of them Net DVDs are legit. Not the easiest to find new anymore but ye still see 'em pop up second hand here every now and then.
It is nice to see an Australian-sourced cover pop up every now and again; I also keep seeing old daybills and one-sheets on various retrospective channels, with our own local classifications on them (used to be a former collector, globally), so it's funny - and memory-triggering - to see them turn up in U.S. made items. I still think we had better graphic designers and layout artists working on a lot of our stuff, but I'm a bit biased on that topic.
@MrUnicorn44 Whenever I see either an old or modern Aussie rating pop up on a cover in a RUclips vid it makes me smile. Which is doubled if there's also an EzyDVD or Sanity watermark or pricetag on there too haha.
Being British and old enough to have been around in 1980, I know I've heard of Beyond Westworld. Not sure if I actually watched it at the time though. Back in those days ITV was made up of different stations for different areas of the country. We had regional variations. Where some stations got things and others didn't. Some didn't show the second season of Space 1999 at all ,for example. Probably because some put it on saturday mornings at about 10.30am. I missed the first four episodes first time around due to various outings. Anyway, my ITV region would use US shows to fill up sunday lunchtimes. I know I saw a lot of episodes of Salvage one around that time and in that slot. And the tv version of Logan's run. Also remember Rafferty. Patrick McGoohan's final tv show. But that's all that spring to mind for sure.
One show that struck me as a surprise is In the Heat of The Night, based on the movie. I had no idea it was a show, and seemed to be a big hit back in the day.
I knew about Beyond Westworld and Dominion, but the others were all new to me. Hopefully they'll find a home on some streaming service so we can check them out!
I wonder if you've come across the Big Easy TV series. I love the original movie but can't seem to find where to watch the series it's based on in decent quality
That cover for The Net might be Australian due to the sticker at the bottom with a censorship rating. The Shaft series was really 7 TV movies of about 90 minutes in length shown in one of those shared spots they did in the 70s.
I liked how in the original movie androids didn't rebel, hell they weren't even true AI. Safeguards simply malfunctioned and androinds could now actually hurt humans, not everyone did, only those that were programmed to be bad guys.
The movie Legion with Terry Farrell also has Parker Stevenson and Rick Springfield! It’s And Then There Were None meets Aliens. I caught it on SyFy about 20 years back. It’s not great, but it’s not bad either.
Stir Crazy! Oh wow, I haven't thought of that tv show in forever! I remember it being pretty okay. Kind of a typical formula for the time. "Character(s) constantly on the run because (premise) meets people, gets in adventures, and helps out before moving on to next week's plot." Odd how back then it was almost taboo for any show other than a soap opera to have a solid continuing plot. Now with shows like Lost, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead, that's the main thing with shows.
Let’s not forget Taken. 2 seasons. The pilot for which was filmed in my house and the village I live in. Port Stanley. Clive Standen is a lovely fella. As were the whole team.
Ok, Beyond Westworld has One scene that is burned into my young brain: the Bad guys are doing something in a room full of agents and computers, and they need to reboot their computers. The lights go down, the monitors go off, AND THE AGENTS ALL SLUMP INTO THEIR KEYBOARDS!! I guess this was to show that hardly anyone at Delos was human, but it kinda scared 8 year old me!

Damn, the Sci-Fi Channel flick Legion is on RUclips? I can finally watch it after all these years! (Pretty sure Trevor Goddard is in it too, I swear he played a drug-addicted former soldier in a film like that). As for the religious Legion flick, I remember I guy I knew back then telling me how he only saw it because he wanted to watch the War in Heaven bits since he's a devout Christian, but utterly hated the film.
I actually have some episodes of The NET TV series as I managed to get them when the show used to be up on this platform. At the moment, I've yet to see the series, but I will after I give the film another look. The premise of "The Net" actually could work well (if not better) in a TV series format as opposed to a movie because you can take more time developing the characters and the fear of having your identity changed via the Internet could be more relevant now than back then. The best way to do the series, in my opinion, would be either as a premium series (HBO or Showtime), or, most likely, a streaming series (Netflix, Amazon, and Apple). I wouldn't mind if Vince Gilligan (the creator of Breaking Bad) took a crack at a similar premise. I've also seen Beyond Westworld. Aside from some silly moments here and there, it was an entertaining cheese-fest. I actually found it more entertaining than the HBO Westworld, as I felt that show was beyond (pardon the pun) pretentious and deviated too much from Michael Crichton's ideas.
Ok I just heard there was tv show based off the movie The Net I wasn't interested until you mentioned Tim Curry now I want to see it Tim Curry makes everything better
