So incredibly beautiful and clear, and so helpful to have this recording by Poulenc himself. Mr Robbins is right about the pedalling, too. Thank you for those comments.
When these great Master composer-pianists left us their precious recorded documents, composers as diverse as Poulenc, Debussy, Scriabin, Fauré, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Granados, Falla, Bartok, Prokofiev, Gershwin, etc they all had a beautiful, elegant, refined touch and an exquisite sense of tonal color in their sensitive use, not abuse of the pedal. Their playing was amazingly clear. When pedal was employed it gave just enough liquidity and necessary "haze" to never excessively blur or obliterate their piano sound sensibilities when recorded. When more pedal was required, they bathed the sound, when necessary, without drowning the clarity of the sound. They were all ravishing colorists. We are fortunate today, to be able to hear the kind of sensitivity these composers displayed in their playing with these rare historic recordings.
