  • fourcornersgui... -- This is part 1 of a 3-part video, in which multi-sport adventurer Steve "Doom" Fassbinder walks you through how to lash your bike to your packraft, specifically how to deal with your tie downs, wheels, axles and chains.
Steve is the lead guide for and co-owner of Four Corners Guides, along with Lizzy Scully. They are writing a how-to, history of, and wild stories about bikerafting guide book. The book project will include various videos featuring Doom, such as this one, along with stories, interviews and videos by, about and featuring more than a dozen bikeraft experts around the world. We've published one "Pirates of Bikerafting" stories that will appear in the book.

Do you have videos of how to pack the raft on the bike? I am curious how large and cumbersome one might be.

We do not, but that's a good idea. It's actually quite easy to pack your raft on your bike. How small it gets depends, of course, on the size of your boat. But for bikerafting, you can leave off the back bands, thigh straps and skirts (if you have a decked whitewater boat) to make it pack down smaller. If you head over to our @fourcornersguides Instagram page, there's a photo in the top row that shows a guy with an open Alpacka Classic rolled up on his handlebars. You should be able to get it pretty small with practice. I like to just lash the packraft to my handlebars with Titan or Voile straps (locking it in place by using a third strap to the stem--you don't want it to bounce around). Steve often uses a handlebar harness, or if he's using panniers, he'll strap it to the top of the rack. We'll definitely answer that question in detail in the book, which will come out spring 2021. You can pre-order it started December 21st. I hope that helps.

Hi drzan, sorry for the late reply. We don't. But we are writing a book right now, and we will explain it in that book. In short, there are many ways you can pack your raft on your bike. You can roll it up tightly and lash it onto the handlebars with a couple 30" Titan Straps, you can strap it to the handlebars with a handlebar harness, you can roll it up on the top of your rack, you can carry it in your backpack. Just remember to make it as tight a package as possible. This takes practice. And, if you're not doing whitewater, take out all the extra stuff in the boat (thigh straps, back band, even the seat if you want to go really light. You can always sit on your backpack). I hope that helps. If you are interested, check out our IndieGoGo Campaign.
