My grandpa used to make a bunch of these for Thanksgiving and always hid one for me to have by myself. He passed away unexpectedly last year, before he ever wrote down the recipe. This year, I plan to start creating my own recipe in his beloved memory. I think this will be excellent recipe to start a new family tradition 😊
I use a hand emulsion blender to cream my sweet potatoes, add butter, 1 can sweeten condensed milk, as less extra sugar as possible, lemon zest, pumpkin pie spice, and those spices. Dark brown sugar instead of granulated. Then eat it breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
If you want to avoid overmixing the custard at the end, I'd mix the sugar and spices together before adding to the sweet potato. You won't have to work out clumps of spices, so less mixing.
This looks amazing. My Mom and I were always looking for a great sweet potato pie recipe and this looks like it might be the one. Sadly this will be my first Thanksgiving without her. But I will make this pie in her honor and keep the tradition of the holiday that she loved so much.❤
Just showed my sister the strawberry lemonade cake video after watching this pie. She said she wishes she could bake alongside of you, because she feels you would help her better her skills in a gentle, nice way!! You're just the kindest soul! Thank you for sharing your baking skills and smiling face with us!
Chef's kiss to the chef! Honestly, I've made Sweet Potato Pie for many years -- patiently removing the strings. Whether using a hand mixer or stand mixer...and rinsing the beaters several times to remove the strings. But using the food processor is genius, a thousand thanks for the tip. And yes, my pies turned out light and fluffy and of course, delicious! Thanks sharing. Love the channel.
If you get air bubbles in filling what you can do is tap pie on counter just like you would with cake batter and it gets rid of bubbles and prevents cracking as well
Sweet potato pie reminds me of my grandmom. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas we could count on her making her sweet potato pie! Wonderfully delicious memories! 💗🥰💗 I have to say, in your fabulous kitchen you have wonderful storage for your spices but I’m itching to alphabetize your spices for you! Anyone and everyone who knows the alphabet will quickly and easily be able to find any spice when assisting you in the kitchen! Having helped numerous friends and family move house over the years, that is the one organizational tip I did for them and still continue to get thanks years later for making their cooking time easier and more efficient! Also it’s good reinforcement for little helpers in the kitchen just learning their alphabet. Plus, you’ll help out any of your more fastidious viewers who appreciate the neat and orderly! 😉😊🥰
What a beautiful pie! 😍 I love to add brown butter, a lil' fresh lemon juice, light Muscovado brown sugar, fresh nutmeg, Ceylon cinnamon, sometimes a lil' fresh orange juice, and condensed milk for contrasting flavors. I am not a fan of blind baking or at least for too long. I would half the time or at least a 1/4 of a time with aluminum around the edges of the crust. I will definitely try your butter pie crust!🎉🎉🎉🎉
You are the sweetest thing. The holidays haven't been the same since I lost my dad but watching this video brought tears to my eyes, I really miss being happy especially during the holidays. You are really amazing keep being you
I'm Southern, I was born in Louisiana it's great to see you tackle the sweet potato pie. It's my favorite but I can't make it like my mom. I can't wait to try yours out.
Ooo I can’t wait to make my pies for Thanksgiving! I have core memories of sore fingers from peeling and chopping sweet potatoes as a child. Baking them is a game changer 😂🎉 We add a dash of OJ. It adds the slightest punch - similar to the salt! Thanks for sharing ❤
@@emmajosaphine Same here my great-grandmother and grandmother thought that to us for years! I believe Sweet Potato Pie is one of those great connectors in our community. Happy Thanksgiving!
Did exactly as you instructed. Both pies were amazingly delicious. The potatoes were so silky smooth after the food processing. Thank you for that simple and easy direction. 😀👍🏾
Hi John! I made the recipe yesterday! This was so easy, thanks to your detailed step by step guide -including the pie crust-. This is the first time I tasted this type of pie, as it is not something that we do in my country. Thank you so so much!
I’ve been making sweet potato pies for decades as part of my holiday meal. This recipe is all new to me. I’ll be trying it this year. It looks delicious.
I love your baking and cooking style. I love the fact that you get to the point and talk about the recipe. Without unnecessary talking - love that! You are the " best"!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Perfect timing for this recipe! Last year I baked a pumpkin pie for the first time and used Preppy Kitchen recipe for it. My partner prefers sweet potato pie so I planned to make one this year.
Looks delicious! Very similar to my recipe but I use allspice instead of ginger. Plus I add molasses and melted butter for a rich and decadent pie. It's great with a peacan pie like topping baked on top. 💜
I love that you showed your sugarlanche. It's important for us diy home cookers to see that faux pas happen to perfectionists too. Thank you for being humble and showing those little kitchen accidents.🥰
Loved how you made the pie. A little added bonus.... My sister added some butter, a dash of almond extract, and a dash of lemon extract or lemon juice. The constrast is phenomenal. Thanks......
I love the Sweet Potato Pie. This is the only pie I really eat.😋 My mom used to make it on Thanksgiving and it was fun helping. but she got tired and too busy so now she buys it instead.
I grew up With my grandmother and my mom’s sweet potato’s pie . You can boil the potato, does not change the how the pie is made. It’s what you put into the potatoes to make it a great tasting pie
I think boiling does taste different from roasting- check out the water from boiling- it’s usually slightly orange; that’s some flavor you’re pouring out. To me, the roasted potato has a deeper flavor, it gets a little carmelized. An older lady taught me to roast the sweet potatoes and I haven’t boiled them since.
John Kanell joins Chris Morocco of Bon Appetit as by far the best cooking teachers we have. Both articulate the process very well, explain the whys and hows of measuring, seasoning, mixing and technique. Bravo!!
Personally, I really don't like pie crust I always used to just eat the pumpkin filling and leave the crust behind😂. So now that I'm on my own, I've decided I will make my sweet potato/ pumpkin pies with a Cracker crust like cheesecake. Here in Germany they don't have Graham cracker, so I just use Leibniz cookies and add some spices to it. I also find the cracker crusts to be significantly easier to make
Here in North Carolina- we Native Americans often times make Sweet Potato bread (slang: "tater bred")..basically a thicker sweet potato pie without the crust. Baked and cut into squares-enjoy. Delicious chilled.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sweet Potato pie!! Yours came out so pretty! I’ve never put ginger or cinnamon in mine, but I think I might make one of them with those two spices. 😊
Your previous sweet potato pie recipe pained me to watch. This looks more in line with what a sweet potato pie should be. I would add browned butter and use brown sugar instead, however. I also wouldn't remove the "scorched" caramelized bits either. Thank you for updating your recipe.
Oh, no butter? 🧈 in the pie. We always put butter in ours and brown sugar. But you nailed it with the other ingredients. My late mom didn't use ginger, but I do, and I prefer lemon extract flavor 😋
My Dad loves sweet potato pie and I'm going to make this for him. I also want to try your recipe for the crust. I can't wait it looks delicious! I'm addicted to your pumpkin loaf recipe btw lol
Your recipes are always so amazing! My family loves each one I've made, and that's a lot! I love your cookbook as well!! I was hoping to request two recipes! Blooming onions, and Ratatouille!
Greetings from Redondo Beach CA🇺🇸Thank you for sharing this recipe. I just followed your directions and for the first time I made a perfect pie. Needless to say baking has always been a challenge to me.😎
My grandson really wants a sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving. I'm getting ready to make it. Wish me luck , His mom, my daughter, used to make it all the time. Unfortunately, she passed away on September 29th, 2023 😢 Please let it come out as good as hers 🙏
Thank you so much for this recipe!! Sweet potato pie is my second favorite pie! And I have looked up recipes but I don’t think there’s ‘great’ SP pie recipes out there, which is odd. Yours is beyond delicious!!

Aww. That would’ve been so special if you had his recipe 💙. Well you can dedicate your recipe to him🙂

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. May his spirit guide you through the recipe.

I knew this was going to be a great recipe when he started with roasted sweet potatoes! I never boil mine for yummy pies 💜
Don’t know how this is my first time stumbling across this young man. He has such a sweet disposition.

Looks delicious!
Lemon extract is a must ingredient in a sweet potato pie.
I made this yesterday. First time I’ve ever tasted a sweet potato pie, let alone made one. It was absolutely delicious, John. Thank you!
This happens a lot with me too the same with scones I had never had a stone before I made my own
If you get air bubbles in filling what you can do is tap pie on counter just like you would with cake batter and it gets rid of bubbles and prevents cracking as well
I absolutely love sweet potato pie. Growing up with Southern parents and grandmothers i had it from time to time. Yummm

I always add a squeeze of lemon juice to balance out my pie. I never thought of OJ, I’ll have to try it!
I'm going to try this tip!
@@emmajosaphine Same here my great-grandmother and grandmother thought that to us for years! I believe Sweet Potato Pie is one of those great connectors in our community. Happy Thanksgiving!
You are wonderful! Thank you for making this recipe.
I used purple sweet potatoes, brown sugar and cut back on the ginger since I’m not a big fan of it and it came out delicious
Did exactly as you instructed. Both pies were amazingly delicious. The potatoes were so silky smooth after the food processing. Thank you for that simple and easy direction. 😀👍🏾
The BEST indeed John many thanks bless to your family always
