動画後半の "study" と "learn" の話です！
どちらも「学ぶ」を意味する単語ですが少しニュアンスに違いがあり、一言で言うと、
"learn"は結果にスポットを当てた動詞で"study"は過程にスポットを当てた表現です！
学校の授業を受けている時など、明確に「勉強」している過程感が強い"study"と、
知識やスキルが身に付いたことを伝えたい"learn"くらいの違いだと理解しておけば十分だと思います！興味持った方は色々な考え方あるので調べて見て下さい！
learnが「習得する」、studyが「勉強する」と明確に意味を分けて教えたほうがいいよねぇ

I spent 12 days in osaka and tokyo. I was amazed by how many Japanese were fluent in english. Especially in tourist heavy areas. I think they were university/high-school students working part-time as cashiers. They even made small talk and asked how was my vacation so far. I guess they were eager to practice their english. They even used some slang. Almost all the stores in akihabara and ueno area had at least 1 employee that was fluent in the staff, and a lot of cashiers at konbini can speak basic english. In the dotonbori area the small talk included them suggesting I visit den den town. They even recommended a few maid cafes! Employees making small talk certainly is more effective and feels safer than touts in the shinjuku area. Those always scare me that it might be a scam.
Is the english level of japanese actually higher than what is said on youtube? Or is it a bias on my part, since because I'm a tourist, I am a magnet for japanese learners wanting to practice their english?
In kawaguchiko not so much. But everyone was so nice.

最近観光客が多いのでレジなどの接客は多少英語ができる人や英語を勉強している人などを雇ってたりするのかもしれませんね。自分もそうですが一般的な日本人はあまり英語が得意ではない人が多いのは間違いないと思います。

I don't think it's that the Japanese are not good at English, but rather that they just don't have the opportunity to improve.
English is also learned in school education in Japan. Just knowing basic vocabulary, grammar, and the alphabet is probably a pretty good thing.
If you work in or live near a tourist area, you will have plenty of opportunities to use English, which means that you will have opportunities to improve your English.
If English is useful for work, Japanese people will make an effort to learn it, and since everyone learns the basics, they improve quickly.
But the skills of those who do not use English on the job will continue to decline after peaking in high school.
If you take the math test, most people should score lower than they did in high school.
More and more travelers these days want to visit non-tourist areas, but if we demanded perfect English conversation from everyone in such areas,

I can actually understand English when I listen or read it, and I use both Japanese and English at work. However, outside of work, I avoid using it. This is because English education in Japan is focused on test scores, and there is a culture of judging English proficiency. I don't want strangers writing things about me on social media. In reality, many Japanese people study English, but most feel embarrassed if they can't speak like a native.
(Of course, if I see someone in trouble or if someone talks to me, I will speak English.)

注文する時、「〇〇と〇〇１つ。」「〇〇お願いします。」ってフレーズをよく使うので、ビジューちゃんが「(注文は)以上です。」って言葉を重視してる所が新鮮でした。

日本語がろくすっぽ分からない状態で居住してきて徐々に理解し始めてるラオーラって存在が出来たから、ビブーももしかしたら来年早々居住してきて、こっちで日本語学校に行くとか何かするかも。
ラオーラも翻訳アプリは使いつつ、日本語学校にも行ってるっぽいし。
