Shoei has great customer service on this. When i crashed in my (also brand new) X14 two years ago. It showed some external scraping/abrasion. I sent it in and they inspected and returned the helmet FREE OF CHARGE! They also provide a letter stating the findings of the damage. Pretty awesome for comfort of using the helmet again.
No question Shoei does an amazing job. - Van
Great video and timed so well for me. I had a high speed low side this past Saturday and although I don’t recall my head impacting the ground severely enough to impact the inner liner, I did get a long and wide scrape across the top and had my face shield ripped off. Most likely it’s time to retire it, as the paint and outer shell was worn down enough to reveal the next layer of shell material. Although I’m bummed that I have to retire the helmet without being able to replace it with the same model, I do have several helmets I can turn to.
The latter is something I learned from a previous video you made, be mindful how much you decide to spend on a particular item, better to have a few lower priced, yet equally qualified protection, than to spend all your money on just one item. Close outs are a God send here!
Keep up the good work Van and glad to see Max wasn’t hurt too badly. I ended up breaking my left pinky and got a couple of fractures in my my back! Let’s just say back protectors are worth their weight in gold, I have no doubt mine saved me from greater injury.
When there is a big scrape I retire it for sure. - Van
One of the few real world examples seen on this topic. Thanks for sharing! This really helps set the debate right👍
You are welcome and thanks for watching! - Van
glad to see Shoei staying true to its name. I bought this helmet from you guys a couple years ago. no regrets
The X-14 is for sure one of the best in the world. - Van
great material! always helpful! im making my first purchase from your shop this week, proud to support.
Your support and kind words are both appreciated! - Van
I'm happy you're making all these after crash videos. I crashed about 3 wks ago at the track and totally forgot about Shoei doing inspections. I do want to get a new helmet though and this is the excuse I need for the wife haha
Should be an easy sell with the wife! - Van
Thanks for this. I'm way too quick to buy a new lid.
Oh but who doesn't love a new helmet! - Van
Was Maxy unscathed after that low side? He’s young and probably flexible like a rubber band.
Max Van was 100% good to go after this. - Van
I’ve put my helmet on the seat sooo many times. I now put it on the front of my tank up by my bars. They cradle it with love haha.
Best practice is to not drop it for sure. - Van
God job! As always. It would have been better if showed the EPS of the crashed Arai too
Thanks for watching. - Van
Ya learn something new every day. Thank ya Sir!

That's a real honest review from a real rider. I just wonder why I haven't seen a crash review of an old helmet vs brand new to see the difference and if it holds true for the manufacturers claim that an old helmet needs to be replaced because it can no longer protect you. I guess they don't want to make a crash video comparison cause it will hurt their business. I have lots of old helmet and I don't ride that often and it seems impractical to replace it cause it's never been in a crush. Sorry for digressing. Nice video, great content.
I have been told that an out of date helmet in good condition will most often still pass the standard it is approved to. The 5 year rule is a bit of a cover your ass type thing for helmet companies IMO. We all have a different idea of good condition. Just imagine for a minute some of the clapped out helmets some people would ride in expecting them to be safe. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear Thanks Van.
There is nothing better than a “no sh!t there i was story” than a listening “no sh!t here i am” love the videos! Don’t tell my wife about this, i have a plethora of helmets because sometimes i drop them, and my wife wants to make sure what little brains i have are safe.. :) Glad to hear Max is safe! New suit, new helmet, is what is called a “Murphy’s law low side” :)
When it happened I was thinking what a bummer that was on the first day of riding. All that matters is he learned something and was kept safe. - Van
After my crash I have sent my helmet back to Arai and they inspected it for me
Arai is a stand up company for sure. I sent one of Max's in before to have the broken diffuser replaced. - Van
If helmet can't withstand being knocked off bike seat, it's not worth protecting your head in a crash! Makes perfect sense!
Could not agree more. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear long ago kid asked me why so nice helmet? My head is worth every penny, smiled an said, "think about it"!
@@sportbiketrackgear my mom was our helmet law but couldn't buy one so got WWII military helmet liners! We looked the fools but didn't care, WE COULD RIDE!
@@sportbiketrackgear Not to bother you but thinking of mom! Her treasured item at her passing in 90s was her motorcycle endorsement! She showed me picture of her riding behind her brothers triumph Pregnant with me, telling me I was a rider even before my birth, 72 yrs ago! I rode her as co-Rider on every bike I even owned, cool! But my dad only loved off-road so we got him 250 Honda Elsenor (sp)! I acquired 100% on each rider safety, advanced rider, an Team motorcycle safety program an taught school so I could tour America for 3 months! Had phone call from Mr. Honda an I helped him develop 100cc oversized piston system for 750cc! My motorcycle history has be very fun exciting an interested! Tim
Two reusable lids out of three crashes is pretty awesome for Max actually. Glad he's ok lids replaceable.
He got lucky a couple of times for sure. We can always get the kid some new gear but he is not replaceable. - Van
How come Max made the decision to change from Aria to the shoei? Both incredible helmets
Both helmets are excellent for sure. I decided to make the change because Arai is no selling helmets directly to Revzilla and Cycle Gear around Tucker which is the main US distributor. This really gives them an advantage over the rest of the dealers who have to purchase from Tucker. As a small business owner I disagree strongly with the decision to sell direct to them so I put Max in the Shoei as they do not sell direct. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear Dodgy shit like that is a bit on the nose, really glad I decided to buy my new Arai from you at STG. As I am a long oval Shoei just doesn't fit well enough for me (always needed to go up in cheek pad and had room down side of head) so needed to go with the Arai long oval shape and you had the exact helmet I was after! If you are dropping Arai money on a lid, supporting a business with principals is no big deal. Always happy to support a family owned business also - Arai and STG for me from now on ;).
Brian you should do podcasts , great voice for it !
I am going to do some Facebook live deal with this guy I love to argue with. Maybe I will do an announcement so you all can check that out. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear please do that sounds great and hilarious
Did Brian lose some gains or did he finally find a shirt that fits?
Quit drinking beer and lost 10 lbs. - Van
When you crash and right before your impact you worry about smacking your super expensive helmet on the ground. So you just flop your body like a dead seal
Max has that shit figured out now thank God! - Van
Is it safe to say that Max’s nickname is Crash
He is at that point where you need to cross the limit to remember where it is. - Van
I'll take that Arai if you're not using it anymore. Thanks.
Keeping that as a spare. - Van
your vids rock!!
Appreciate you! - Van
This return process is not pleasant. I need to speak with someone on the phone. I can't wait 24 hours for each response through email.
Using a visual inspection to determine internal unseen damage of the EPS layer in order to decide whether or not to replace your helmet after a crash is foolish and dangerous.
If you would not be comfortable reusing the helmet then replace it. If a helmet was so delicate how could it ever protect the rider? - Van
What if droped it few times??
You are the only one who can decide if the helmet is still safe as the responsibility is all yours. - Van
Well said!
Thank you for watching! - Van
Love it.... 👊🏽👍🏽
Thanks for watching! - Van
I like to collect helmets, if you wish to sell it let me know.
Max is keeping this one on his shelf. - Van
Still pinching broooo!!!!!
No idea what you mean here man.
I disagree I think any impact regardless of how severe compromises the external shell
You disagree based based on what? Your own testing?
Twozup you’re comical, any helmet that’s been impacted must be sent to the manufacture for testing. This is a free service every helmet company provides.
I did a lot of research a couple seasons back with multiple helmet manufactures. They shared information with me that is not publicly available. That said you need to do what you feel is best for yourself. - Van
