Yes he actually is a genius. For sure. He’s written the whole scores for Broadway musicals, this particular song he wrote in the toilet and it’s probably his least favourite and most misunderstood. As Jemxs says above- people don’t get that the song is actually still all about the n word- even after the comedic “drop” mid song- he simply used comedic metaphor (Ginger) to present the paradox and idiosyncrasies of society’s struggle to deal with the other word!
Tim is a musical/lyrical genius. The reason for his hair/eyes is that when he started out he wanted the audience focusing on his facial expressions. The songs hit harder when you see his face 🤣 He can’t read or write music. 🤯 His piano skills are really shown in ‘Dark side’ (Awesome version). Tim is a complete genius. He actually performed this song with Ed Sheeran live. He admitted that the inclusion of "tampon" was just to get Ed to sing the word lol. You definitely need to watch his song "If I didn't have you ..." but the uncensored complete version which has a comedy stand-up clip about the creation of the song following it.
Tim Minchin is so intelligent and an amazing musician/human being. His timing is impeccable and that piano playing - notice how he "beats up" the piano when he sings "if you want to fight us". For another good laugh check out his song for his wife "If I didn't have you" (take the long version) and if you have children follow that up by "Lullaby". Another recommendation: the beat poem "Storm"! His "9 Life Lessons" speech for the graduates at UWA is also worth listening to (though it doesn't have anything to do with music)!
Tim is an incredible lyricist , composer and pianist . Saw him before he was very well known at a local smallish venue when he toured the UK around 18 years ago and he had us crying with laughter at such songs as 'Inflatable You' & 'Canvas Bags', and then quietly sobbing when he sang 'White Wine In The Sun ', a beautiful song about being able to visit family at Christmas when you've been far away. Saw him again 10 years ago at the 20,000 seater O2 arena when he played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and he was incredible .
' Inflatable You'! Thanks for reminding me! I had no idea he played Judas at the O2. Lucky you! I saw Tim's Australian TV debut, back when he didn't speak and dyed his hair black. 😅

This is such a cleverly written piece. I doubt there's a single first-time listener who didn't get lead down exactly the path Tim wanted. That's why it's a good first exposure to his work. If you see the switch-up coming it has less impact. The palpable relief when you realise that he's not going "there" and then the reflection when you realise that he is actually talking about "that" word. If you do any more, I'll throw my vote behind Dark Side (Awesome version), but you won't be disappointed with any of his work. Some is powerful, some is playful, but it is all food for thought as well as entertaining.
There was a moment in Tim's life where he realised the N word and the word ginger have the same letters in them. He HAD to write a song about it and now we have this masterpiece

"Thank you, Jesus" y'say on the reveal? Nah, Thank You God. ;) Also yes that's my suggestion for next one - there's a version from the bbc comedy prom which is my favorite performance of it as it comes complete with a bit of spoken set-up beforehand.
The other one where you can see his piano skills is from the same concert: "Dark Side (awesome version)" All Tim's other stuff is also great - but if you want to see his almost reckless way of playing the piano, this is the one to watch. my 5 cent. btw: great reaction! but: trust your viewers more!
Always funny watching watching people react to this in different ways....white people get nervous like you but black people are ready to get pissed off, then the penny drops 😂
'Lullaby', 'You Grew on Me' and 'Darkside' are also brilliant, hilariously funny. He's also done some great serious stuff, 'The Absence of You' is a gorgeous love song :) btw the irony with this song is that gingers were also targets of a lot of abuse and bottom line is their bullying was no better than that of any other group of people....

The biggest thing about this song, that many reactors seem to miss is that it *is* about prejudice, including the prejudice faced by the group it leads you to think it is about, as well as redheads and other marginalised groups. Yes it uses comedy and a focus on redheads, but all the key points and themes raised apply to those called "N-word", and many others who receive prejudice in society.
You really want to hear him on piano, watch Dark Side. Also if you’re really game, Cont. It’s only audio but really clever (and it’s not going to ban you either, so just trust Tim 😂)
He's fantastic - since it's December, why not do _White_ _Wine_ _in_ _the_ _Sun?_ It's about Christmas from an Australian perspective, and is one of my favourite Christmas songs.

Suggestions for the Minchin rabbit hole are (in no order) : White wine in the Sun [it's a christmas song and it's that time of year], Dark Side (Awesome version), Cont, Storm [stage version not animated] , three minute song, Thank you God, Rock n Roll Nerd, Good Book, Lullaby, If I Didn't Have You - Full Uncut Version, If I Didn't Have You - Full Uncut Version, The Aeroplane, Ten Foot Cock And A Few Hundred Virgins
I love Tim and this song. Im mixed. My Mom was a brunette and my dad was a Ginger. I have some siblings with red hair. I have dark hair, but my Dad gave me my freckles and the ability to burn without tanning
"Thank you, Jesus" y'say on the reveal?
Nah, Thank You God. ;)
Also yes that's my suggestion for next one - there's a version from the bbc comedy prom which is my favorite performance of it as it comes complete with a bit of spoken set-up beforehand.
Also by Tim ........ "Thank you god".
Welcome to our Aussie humour.....lol
Check out Lullaby by this guy! It's absolutely hysterical!
The other one where you can see his piano skills is from the same concert: "Dark Side (awesome version)"
All Tim's other stuff is also great - but if you want to see his almost reckless way of playing the piano, this is the one to watch.
my 5 cent.
btw: great reaction! but: trust your viewers more!
Always funny watching watching people react to this in different ways....white people get nervous like you but black people are ready to get pissed off, then the penny drops 😂
👀
'Lullaby', 'You Grew on Me' and 'Darkside' are also brilliant, hilariously funny. He's also done some great serious stuff, 'The Absence of You' is a gorgeous love song :) btw the irony with this song is that gingers were also targets of a lot of abuse and bottom line is their bullying was no better than that of any other group of people....
You should do his Comfessions next...
😂😂😂 you got me in 😢
Someone was getting a bit heated😊

Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
He wrote Lullaby after his second child was born. White wine in the sun was after his first baby was born.
Tim wrote the musical Matilda
You really want to hear him on piano, watch Dark Side. Also if you’re really game, Cont. It’s only audio but really clever (and it’s not going to ban you either, so just trust Tim 😂)
Haha 😂
Maybe its a good job you didnt come in hot straight away with Pope Song, then you really would be done 😂😂😂.
good Aussie comedian
“Dirt Cheap” by Cody Johnson
Legend 👍👏 try Darkside
Definitely check out Darkside (Awesome Version).... It will blow your mind.
He's fantastic - since it's December, why not do _White_ _Wine_ _in_ _the_ _Sun?_ It's about Christmas from an Australian perspective, and is one of my favourite Christmas songs.
Gotta check out lullaby / pope song / confessions /storm / rock n roll nerd.
Just a few goodies from Tim 😅
Would we steer you wrong? 😈
