More people need to give props to the dentist. Difficult kids are hard to treat and they have to be very careful and patient. Many dentists are not patient.
Griffin handles this way better than I do. I’m 20 and basically have a book full of special needs. I honestly can’t even tell you the last time I went to the dentist. Probably back when I was like 16 or so. My needs are so bad that I have to be put under anesthesia just for a simple cleaning. Like full-on, in the hospital, knocked out kind of thing just for brushing, flossing, and whatever simple tools they need to use. I am so impressed that, with support, he’s able to get through it every 6 months. You’re doing an amazing job with finding a method that works for him to keep him on a healthy dentist schedule and he is so brave. Keep up the great work. I can’t wait to see what else you’re able to tackle as a family unit🩵
To help your son communicate with others I suggest teaching him sign language, so that way he can still learn to talk even though he is nonverbal, I was around a lot of nonverbal people who are deaf, and that’s how they communicate, and if you ever move to Mobile, you can go to Augusta Evans, which is a special-needs school
Lots of parents just don't bring their kid to the dentist if they are like this. They don't understand you need to. Dentists are great and used to this behavior. Even kids that don't have a disability 85% of kids don't go to the dentist. Thank you for bringing Griffen. I have to thank my mum for bringing me to the dentist. Griffin will thank you in his way.
My twin brother is nonverbal, idk how he would do dentist appointments like if he would be all numbed up or something, it’s hard to take care of his teeth but he’s able to brush his teeth on his own as long as you put toothpaste on It and hand him the toothbrush
Good for you helping him go through this. As a child I was terrified of the Dentist. The first Dentist i went yelled at Me and tried prying My Mouth open to put a huge needle in it. So My Dad trearened Me with the dreaded spanking if i wouldn't open My mouth at the Second Dentist. The second Dentist sat and talked to Me ( and said it may hurt a little like a pinch ,but it would be over soon). He was in the Fischer Building in Detroit. He told me to lift me left tumb when the light turned green. And to lower it when the light finally turned red. He said only look at the street light out of the window. I was i think 5. I still remember him foundly.
My sister has CP and is 16! She still has trouble at the dentist (my mother has to go under her and hold her down) We haven’t taken her there because of how she behaves, and her mouth isn’t in its greatest condition. Do you have any suggestions on things to say or do to help her clam down?
I'm Thirty-One and up until they removed the machine I would always ask to get a little corn for the machines I know it sounds a little immature but it was something to look forward to for me since I'm not a big fan of the dentist
I sure hope you aren't ruining your older childs childhood by forcing responsibility he shouldn't have to do. My cousin was the older sibling, he hates his parents now. They made him help with his younger brother far too much. Robbed him of his childhood.
Hes better than me at the dentist😂😂i be saying stuff like dont drop it mamm plz dont drop it in my mouth i dont wanna die mom halp shes touching not my mouth shes touching my face under medicane outloud
I felt his discomfort and struggle 😢😢. I’m autistic and I still struggle at nearly 21 yrs old with brushing my teeth because it’s a rlly difficult sensory experience for me and it’s takes a lot out of me. I’ve had teeth problems my whole life because of it and it’s just rlly difficult. If my neurodivergence was recognized at a younger age I would definitely have been able to have that worked on it at a younger age and maybe have less dental issues now 🥲 and this is SOO many peoples experience.
Same here :( I'm not as old, but I was recently diagnosed. I hated getting my teeth brushed when I was little, my parents had to kinda restrain me to do it. Sometimes it's still hard, and it feels like I'm gonna throw up. It's gotten better tho :) I hope you find a way around the discomfort ❤
I have autism too, but not as bad. I’m on the spectrum, but I can do tasks like brushing my teeth easily. But, whenever me and my family goes out in public to do something, such as an event, I come home and just feel exhausted. Even if it’s just going to church. I hate going out in public. I am a introvert, and I would rather stay home in my cozy bed. But I know going outside is a part of life, and I can’t spend my time indoors every single minute of the day. So that’s why I try to go outside, even though I feel horrible once I’m done.
Such a sweet boy Griffin is. He's come a long way! Harrison is a great big brother!

What a beautiful boy ❤
Knowing how rare it is to see him not outwardly look happy made it heartbreaking to see him sit up at the end. A sad Griffin makes me sad.
I stay in my wheelchair during the dentist too!!! I am in a power wheelchair that reclines and it makes it so much easier
As he gets older you might consider checking in to the in hospital dental clinics
