    So how do you decide? If your goal is relax, cruise and simply enjoy your time on the water, low angle is a great choice for you. If you are paddling a performance boat, tend to be more aggressive and are willing to focus on your paddling technique, High-Angle is our suggestion.

    I just recently discovered the werner paddles on a boat demo...they are awesome! Light weight, and less fatigue on the arms and shoulders. Much less weight than the Ozark trail paddles that I was using.

    Very good advice on paddles. I am a reservoir fisherman and I use low angle to cover large bodies of water and is less disturbing to get up on the fish.

    If I'm trying to get to a certain point in a lake I use high angle but once I get there I use low

    Which is better for covering longer distances? Is maintaining the higher angle simply a manner of technique and thus better to focus on, or does the energy efficiency of the lower angle make up for a slower pace?

    • @wernerpaddles
      @wernerpaddles  3 года назад +2

      So you don't fatigue as quickly having to get the paddle up to forehead height every stroke, when covering long distances, we'd recommend a low angle paddle. High vs Low does not affect speed.

      Also, low-angle form has an added trick when trying to cover long crossings in windy conditions- the low angle of your stroke keeps the paddle closer to the water and may be protected from strong winds that blow over the waves. You can often feel the wind catching your paddle like a sail in certain conditions. Fighting this needs extra energy.

    what if you want to do both touring and surf play? I have a low angle kalliste and its great.

    • @Vylkeer

      You get yourself both an Ikelos and Kalliste. Sure, it’s really expensive but it’s the only way to have the best in both high and low angle paddling. There’s no way you can use a low angle paddle to surf, it’s not designed for that. I got my Ikelos literally yesterday and am super happy about it. Next big purchase will be the Kalliste.

      Vylkeer wow. Money to burn. Two $400+ paddles.

    • @Vylkeer
      @Vylkeer 4 года назад

      George S I wouldn’t say that. It’s a clever investment. If you’re really passionate about it, it’s absolutely worth it, especially considering they’re both going to last for decades, if properly treated. It’s still a lot of money for a paddle, that’s why it’s not for the average paddler. I only have an Ikelos for know and it’s going to be a while before I get a Kalliste anyway but I don’t think it’s a waste of money.

      Vylkeer I just thought a backup paddle would a cheaper one. Two good ones of different types makes sense if you can afford it. I did bought a $285 paddle (Werner Camano) for my first paddle when starting out.

    • @Vylkeer
      @Vylkeer 4 года назад

      George S Great choice. I first got a Camano too and still use it as my low angle paddle since it’s the only one I have. I will sell it and replace it with a Kalliste but it’s going to be a while before I do.

    Given the fact that you're going to always carry a spare paddle anyway , why not carry one of each and let conditions dictate which one you use
    Here on the Gulf Coast I use low when cruising the mangroves or the shallow bays behind the barrier beaches
    and then use high when I'm going under bridges and in and out of inlets
