At first it seemed liked you had crap luck. No stud finder. You go get a stud finder but don’t have a 9 volt battery. Argh!!! Then the stars aligned you prevailed and shelves turned out great. This was a great video and it shows EXACTLY what diy’ers go through. You didn’t pretty it up by making it seem like everything went smoothly from beginning to end. Realistic and true. You guys look like a cute, fun couple and that little baby girl is beautiful. Don’t pay any mind to the rude people that post stupid comments. They’re just not happy and it’s obvious that ya’ll are. Post more videos!
Thanks for the video... I can show this to my lovely wife and she shall be inspired to have me make these for her! Lol. She's been wanting floating shelves since before she was born it seems? You two just earned yourselves a new pair of subscribers.
Great Job, I enjoyed the video. I have to build these. Question, Would it have been easier to hang the 2x4s(backbone) on the wall first? Then hang the supports?
Here is a good trick to find a stud which I use every time when finding mine! U just need any type of magnet and then slowly move it over the drywall until it gets stuck. Then you mark that spot with a pencil, because what you are marking is the nail when the drywall was originally hung. Then if u go down or up right from the first nail you’ll see where all the nails on that stud are located at. No stud finder, no batteries, no money spent
Hey K. I super love u. I think u n ur family are so very fun to watch. Beautiful home. My daddy passed away 2years ago now n I still remember him on his hands n knees adding concrete to my garage floor. May Jae always either have this home or always have this footage of her daddys beautiful work it will be everything. hugs rai in texas. :)
why are so many here sifting on a couple's discussion here , come on folks be a sport and just admit you also say things like that, atleast that couple is having talks with eachother , live TOGETHER and not NEXT to eachother plus its a great job done . the only difference is simply that it is on youtube and we like to say atleast something negative here , Do we not have enough to do ? I suggest we all look at our own household here or atleast at ourselfs , christ sake , complain complain about a couple that debats on youtube ow dear , I can not imagine how bored you all are in your own life if that is what you gotta say , it is just disturb(ing)ed to live in a world where there are people only wining about another couples debats . To the uploader(s) here : I really thank u much for the video , starting today as I just moved out some of my old closets for getting some more space in my own place :) oh and about your debating here ? I find that very interesting because that's atleast a bit of proof that u guys talk , discuss and stand up for your own opinion , which is for some difficult to say and hear from the person they share their life with , I like it , just reminds ME of how a good relationship actually has its normal ups , downs and most of all that we are just human and can relate to your talks here :) , really fun to have been shown how to build this , to remind us to be human beings sharing their own ideas and a big thumbs up guys ! subscribed btw
I am also starting a floating shelf project and this video helps me out a lot. You did a wonderful job, the stained wood looks awesome on your wall. Will be subscribing!!
This is the best method of building a strong floating shelf that I have seen on You Tube, other floating shelve designs that I have seen are not designed the right way.
I enjoyed this so much more than most. Normal people DIY.! But How did the shelves mount? I get it fits around but how are they affixed to the base? Again Thank you for posting this video! Truly gives me the confidence I need to do the installation but get the hubby to cut the pieces. A Table saw would make the project much easier.
Thank you! He drove a couple of screws through the top of the case into the frame about 1/2" away from the wall. They have held up great that way so far. He said a table saw def helps if you want custom dimensions, but he bought all the lumber at the size he needed it before he started.
The nagging when u were trying to find the stud made me laugh so much! You guys look like bunch of fun, was so funny watching I forgot I wanted to ACTUALLY learn to make a floating shelf
Finally someone who's not perfect and shows that everyone makes mistakes! I know I'm going to have a similar problems finding the studs because our house is over 100 years old and has lath and plaster walls and regular stud finders don't work because of all of the nails in the lath, also, not one sud is 16" on centre... :P
A stud finder is a very useful tool. Washers on the lag bolts would be a little better too so it has more of a hold on the 2x4's. I just built one of these for my sister over the weekend. She needed a space for her cable box and stuff in her house.
+Michael Meis (tubbz23) or even those pan head screws that come with your kregg jig have more surface area to hold at the face although since the shelf is only about 10 inches long I don't think they will need it. also when you found your stud by that box just measure off 16inches and you be on the next studs! great work just made one in my garage!
Awesome! This has turned out to be a learning channel about something EVERYBODY needs - furnishings. I loved the dialogue between you two at the end while you interview your wife. Her explanation was stellar. I actually thorougly enjoyed this vlog made exclusively at home. You guys should really consider selling furniture using Paypal. I for one would buy it. I have always wanted a homemade solid, rocking share. I'd pay half up front.
Looks good, decent video. I may build something like it for myself soon, and that pocket hole guide tool is a wonderful tip, I'll be sure to pick one of those up next time I'm at the hardware store. One thing though: You should really add annotations as subtitles where the wind was rapping the microphone while you showed off the stain. We can't hear a word of that and youtube's subtitle function is useless.
I love this video and I like your family is doing this together. House renovations are no fun. We are going thru it now, hence the reason why I came across your video! Keep up the good work. Life is an adventure!
Just curious about the pocket holes. If the back is getting screwed into the wall then why not just drill from the backside of the 2 x 4 that’s getting mounted?
+Wind Dancer Chimes They do slide onto the frame. I drove 4 one inch wood screws 3/4 of an inch from the wall to keep it from sliding off or moving around
LOL!! You guys are too funny. Husbands should appreciate when they have brilliant wives. Lol. Love the part where the wifey is right (about the stud location) and then super chilling and daydreaming about things to buy to put on the finished shelves. Oh and by the way... the paint is a thumbs up. The shelves are beautiful! Great idea to fill an empty space. Looks doable too. Tfs!
Always keep a thin trim nail ,tap with hammer until the proper sound then dial it on in by nailing small surface trim nail until u find it . In your case use whatever I mean you know your going to cover any damaged sheet rock with your shelf ,it looks great btw
Nice. Did you have to deal with any warping with such long cheap pine boards? I find working with cheap pine potentially very annoying at lengths beyond 4ft.
I would love to make a similar one too later. ^_^ But I wonder how does it differ from a simple flat wood on the top instead ? Would it save more time ?
After reading all the comments, I finally did google Woody Hyezmar's website and got his book. I'm now happy to find myself working on some new exciting proyects this month :)
so did the box like slide over the frame?or did you screw the pine to the frame you didnt show how to install it on the from sorry I'm not real mechanical I need a paint by numbers :)
well for a stud finder, USE A MAGNET, no it won't find a wood stud BUT the nail/screws holding the sheetrock on are metal. or typically 16" centers for the 2x4's.
are they holding up? we installed floating shelves similar in size but they are now sagging. trying to figure out how to fix it and still keep the same look....
Came across this video looking for entertainment center designs, but overall, this isn't a bad design for floating shelves. If you're experiencing sagging in shelves there are really only a few places of failure. first is going to be the connection of the back plate to the actual wall. if you didn't get the screws in the wall studs the shelf WILL eventually fail and fall. I suggest taking the pine off the framing and resecuring. The second possible failure point is going to be the struts screwed to the back plate which act as the primary support and horizontal stability for the shelf. If the screws are not secure here it will eventually sag. This is sure requires a little more math to determine how far off the wall this shelf can extend. You will notice that most floating shelves are typically very shallow. Again, you'll want to take the pine shroud off the frame and determine if this is happening. One thing I didn't see this gentleman do is apply a wood glue of any kind to his frame. This is CRITICAL error if he did not (perhaps he did and it just wasn't on video). A titebond 2 wood glue will add an additional and hugely important chemical bond between the back plate and struts which is actually more important and offers greater security than the screws do. Lastly, if I were to ever build a floating shelf like this I would HIGHLY suggest you do NOT use 2x4 material for the struts or the front plate. A 2x4 can be used for the back/wall plate if you desire but the struts and front plate should be made from a 3/4" plywood product to reduce the weight on the front of this unit which will help with potential future sag. Good luck.
It looks OK but the shelves are so deep that you know it's unlikely to be solid wood so you'd (I'd) be looking for the joins which are pretty obvious up close. I'd opt for something about half the thickness (solid hardwood) and use a 12mm Auger bit and some threaded rod for the supports. The back of the shelf can be routed out to take a piece of 2x2 holding the rod supports.
+electrogear the joins we meant to be visible... I would have mitered all the corners and worried about grain orientation if I was going for the illusion of a solid piece
just wondering if anyone that has made this could tell me if I could use this to place a flat screen tv on? it is about 32 lbs. do you think this shelf would be safe to place anything 35lbs or so?
You learn by doing and my guess is he learned a lot. What I would have done is basically just thrown some cabinet grade plywood over the frame and then trimmed it all out with some nice 1x2's with 45 degree angles cut at the end.
Not sure if your battery on your drill is dying or if that drill is just gutless, you shouldn't have to unscrew and rescrew screws with an impact drill.
At first it seemed liked you had crap luck. No stud finder. You go get a stud finder but don’t have a 9 volt battery. Argh!!! Then the stars aligned you prevailed and shelves turned out great.

Great job! Tired of ignorant comments
Great Job, I enjoyed the video. I have to build these. Question, Would it have been easier to hang the 2x4s(backbone) on the wall first? Then hang the supports?
+Jerome Phillips Def possible, never thought about doing it like that.
Good suggestion by JP and gracious answer by Michael Meis👍👍

its been 2 years, does this still work or have they updated physics?

I like the shelves you made they came out real good. I also think it's beautiful that you included your wife that's real special.
I have been wanting floating shelves forever.I might have to break down and actually build them. Great video and beautiful family.

My little sister and I are here cos we’re watching the first result of random words. This is “shelf.” Thanks for your shelf wisdom
I am also starting a floating shelf project and this video helps me out a lot. You did a wonderful job, the stained wood looks awesome on your wall. Will be subscribing!!
This is the best method of building a strong floating shelf that I have seen on You Tube, other floating shelve designs that I have seen are not designed the right way.
er, no. How much weight do you think these could support?
I enjoyed this so much more than most. Normal people DIY.! But How did the shelves mount? I get it fits around but how are they affixed to the base?

I love the part with your wife on the couch! 😂 your commentary plus her response was great.
The nagging when u were trying to find the stud made me laugh so much! You guys look like bunch of fun, was so funny watching I forgot I wanted to ACTUALLY learn to make a floating shelf
lol you and your wife are a fun match. I enjoyed listening to the two of you as much as I learned about the shelf :D
Finally someone who's not perfect and shows that everyone makes mistakes!

Absolutely awesomeness! You two are the best! Behold! Pinterest dreams do come true lol.

Agh washers is a great idea, should've thought of that. I'll def do that on the next set I put up

Kris nice seeing your talented DIYs again. I have been away for so long and so much has happened. Be in touch!
This is the realest representation of home improvement I've ever seen.

I would buy!!!
andrealjackson Me too
thanks is always nice to see other people's ideas thanks everyone
Michael has himself a beautiful African princess, a little nerdy which is a plus...you go Michael....your the stud, you didn't need to buy one....lol
They turned out well. Good idea with the Kreg jig.
No need for So many nasty comments. Everyone watched it because they are after ideas or you wouldn't have watched.
Thanks for the upload 👍
plus, this was most likely made to fit the house's arrangement.
correct you are..,.But he really didn't show much of how to do anything....
Looks good, decent video.
I may build something like it for myself soon, and that pocket hole guide tool is a wonderful tip, I'll be sure to pick one of those up next time I'm at the hardware store.

Good job..and your wife had the right idea, glass of wine and let you do the work! Lol.
I see alot of game rooms with shelves to hold drinks, is that the same thing? Are normal shelves strong enough to be used as bars?
Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Fabulous job on the shelves... Can't wait to see them styled Nekiyah
I love this video and I like your family is doing this together. House renovations are no fun. We are going thru it now, hence the reason why I came across your video! Keep up the good work. Life is an adventure!
great job and best of all awesome team work
How thick are these? Seems like they're 5"? So you had to rip the 1*6s down to 5"?
That was cool. Did you think about putting a finished top over the base shelves? That would have been interesting.
Just curious about the pocket holes. If the back is getting screwed into the wall then why not just drill from the backside of the 2 x 4 that’s getting mounted?
Michael how are the shelves attached to the frame or do they just slide on? Thanks btw for posting this.
+Wind Dancer Chimes They do slide onto the frame. I drove 4 one inch wood screws 3/4 of an inch from the wall to keep it from sliding off or moving around
LOL!! You guys are too funny. Husbands should appreciate when they have brilliant wives. Lol. Keep your stud finder. It comes in handy. You will need it for future projects. Believe me I have used mine many many times.
Good project. It would help if show the last step, putting the shelf over the frame (the only missing part).
Nice. Did you have to deal with any warping with such long cheap pine boards? I find working with cheap pine potentially very annoying at lengths beyond 4ft.
icawn I didn't have any problems with warping. I typically let them dry for a few days before I build anything with them to help as well.
I would love to make a similar one too later. ^_^ But I wonder how does it differ from a simple flat wood on the top instead ? Would it save more time ?
Nice work! Love area in kitchen and stain color! Pinterest gone good!
After reading all the comments, I finally did google Woody Hyezmar's website and got his book. I'm now happy to find myself working on some new exciting proyects this month :)
Not to be mean or anything but that whole stud finding thing was so funny.
so did the box like slide over the frame?or did you screw the pine to the frame you didnt show how to install it on the from sorry I'm not real mechanical I need a paint by numbers :)
Lol it's okay! Yes the box slides over the frame. I drove 1" wood screws along the top of the box 3/4" from the wall to secure it to the frame.
What color is that ? It's real nice I want that color for my livingroom and thanks both of u I learned how to do the shelves
well for a stud finder, USE A MAGNET, no it won't find a wood stud BUT the nail/screws holding the sheetrock on are metal. or typically 16" centers for the 2x4's.
by the way.... how much weight will these hold (more or less)? I need to do some for fairly heavy books.
He sat on them after he made them so at least 250lbs
HouseOFMeis Thank You so very much. :-D
lol devilish grins and grunts 😄 love it!
what do you call that life saver for woodworkers? I want to order one, but don't know the name of it.
+Omar Guevara do you mean the kreg pocket hole jig?
Yes that is the one, thank you.
are they holding up? we installed floating shelves similar in size but they are now sagging. trying to figure out how to fix it and still keep the same look....
+lindy cass did you screw into the STUDS? and 2 screws per stud?

nice job - could you please tell how much weight could each shelf hold?
Eli Ben David Never tested it other than pushing down on it pretty hard. I would say 100-150lbs with the way the frame is set up.
100-150 LBS are quite OK. great job. watched once more..
What do you call that blue fixture that you say is a lifesaver ?
Thanks for putting this up, its gonna help a lot when I put mine up.
Looks good, guys!
Awesome shelves - great job !
What did you use to install or hang the frame to the studs?
Great couple and good work.
Great video guys.😀
Lol! Great video guys, too funny👏🏿
Hi there I want to use high gloss boards how do I join the box especially I don't want to show any screws or nails please advise
Great video, I am definitely going to do this in the mancave!!!
those are great. finished product looks was beautiful!
did you pre drill the wall before you put the shelves in?
If you were going to screw them in while they were off the wall Why did you sum down instead of screwing them from the back of the board?
Great job guys. Finding the studs without a finder is real bitch. The struggle is real. :)

Cool man keep up the positive vibes all the time, good vid bro
just wondering if anyone that has made this could tell me if I could use this to place a flat screen tv on? it is about 32 lbs. do you think this shelf would be safe to place anything 35lbs or so?
Absolutely, it would easily hold up to 150lbs
Good job man, wife's funny.
What kind of screws did he use onto the wall to the studs ?
What stain did you use? Love your work!
Thanks you two ! I needed this for my July project !
Thanks for the upload, good idea for shelves.
Fun video too!
AafkeArt bread
great job. and I liked the ending :) keep doing your work and thank you for sharing it with us.
How did you mount and attach the shelves?
Love it! Great job Michael!
Simple and looks great!! #shelves
Looks great. Good job.
Love the sound effects on the reveal of the shelves lol
I enjoyed your post. Love to the family
8:05 😂😂😂 I like you man keep up the good work
Beautiful work
You learn by doing and my guess is he learned a lot. What I would have done is basically just thrown some cabinet grade plywood over the frame and then trimmed it all out with some nice 1x2's with 45 degree angles cut at the end.
you guys are too cute :) nice work on the shelves
Sweet shelves, thanks bud. Women never appreciate alll of our work :-)
Tip
Drill a little drill bit in the gap of the electrical box and the drywall to find the stud .
Not sure if your battery on your drill is dying or if that drill is just gutless, you shouldn't have to unscrew and rescrew screws with an impact drill.
+Jonathon Estrada He probably didn't pre-drill any holes would be my guess
great job man, looks awesome and may I say you have a Beautiful Wife. have a great day
I love the wife and how she explains everything
Nice Job guys!
Shelves look badass bro. Good work. Thanks
+Jamie Reese thank you!
To blocky, I would have used 2*1" frame and a 3mm plywood box and tack it to the frame. lite, slim and slick
+bigdar198126 Good idea, you should make a video of it
+HouseOFMeis that sounds very sarcastic...
Bbbbbuuuuurrrrnnn
They look good. Thanks!!
is this a commercial for stub finder?
nice work guys ...teach her your skills
great video! very nice!!
Nice ! Great job
