  • EPISODE 122
    It's been a few years, and I believe we are long overdue for a tour at the Lincoln Park Zoo. I can't think of a better way to reintroduce you to this historic park than to show you its newest project! The Pepper Family Wildlife Center😬, formerly known as the Kovler Lion House, has been standing since 1912. While obviously changes were made to the exhibit over the years, in fall of 2021, the Lion House was once again brought into the modern world. The structure remained, but no longer are the 40 year old grottoes, and cramped indoor displays. A $41 million face-lift replaced them with a more contemporary, one of a kind lion savanna. The cats have double the space, it's far more educational, food ziplines go across the yard, and you can now get closer to the lions like you never could before. Oh yeah and how could I forget... This new development also came with Pilipili, the first lion cub born at Lincoln Park in 20 years!

    The Lion centre looks great, will try to visit the next time I go there!
    Though honestly, if I were in charge, I'd definitely try to do more with the south wall. I have several options at the moment:
    #1 - Include terreriums for certain African reptiles and invertebrates.
    #2 - Move the snow leopards, lynxes and pandas out (perhaps to the space currently occupied by the Zebra yards) and replace them with other african fauna, perhaps servals/caracals and hyenas.
    #3 - Retain the indoor portions to give indoor exhibits for the snow leopards and red pandas (and move the Canada lynxes out while at it).

    • @TheRandomZooVisitor
      @TheRandomZooVisitor 2 года назад +2

      Im with you on moving out the other cats and red panda, but what if they also took the nearby camel and zebra exhibit and turned it into a rotaional hyena, Wild dog, and cheetah exhibit one yard connecting to a south wall indoor portion

    Zuka-zama! Been to the Lincoln Park Zoo back in 2017 before they renovated the lion habitat! Say, try visiting the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Woodland Park Zoo, Oakland Zoo, Sacramento Zoo, San Francisco Zoo, & Disney's Animal Kingdom soon! Also, 3 zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak...
    1) What is the name of the SF Zoo's female bald eagle that passed away last Wednesday?
    2) How many new rescued tigers did the Oakland Zoo welcomed?
    3) What are the names of the 3 lionesses that moved into the San Diego Zoo Safari Park?

    The answer to the question at the end is:
    Amur Tiger indoor/outdoor viewing
    African Lion indoor/outdoor viewing
    2 African serval indoor viewing (one was styled like the savanna, the other a jungle
    2 jaguar indoor viewing
    And on the outdoor south side,
    Cougar
    Canada Lynx
    Red Panda
    Amur Leopard
    And Snow Leopard
    So 9 species in total!
    I agree though, more could be done to the south wall indoors, maybe have a few small animals that youd find living in a kopje near lions?

    The Question of favorite zoo baby, In Columbus of 2015 we had a litter of 3 Amur Tiger Cubs, sadly 2 of them didn’t make it but the surviving cub called Chewy or Chewbacca from Star Wars which he now can be find at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. He was a survivor he even came up to the glass at the tiger exhibit and jumped onto the glass.

    • @ZooTours
      @ZooTours  2 года назад +9

      They threatened to sue because profiting off of one's copyright is illegal. So filming at every zoo and monetizing the footage, depending on their policies, is against the law. Which is why I now warn every new zoo of my intentions before filming. Tagging organizations on social media is not illegal.

    Answer to this episode's question: 11, 6 indoor and 5 outdoor? I was also not aware that the jaguar had no outdoor access. I also know that the zoo's last puma was a short stay because they received her during the process of moving their remaining animals of the lion house to other facilities.
    Favorite zoo baby: Hudson from Brookfield. A real big boy now obviously.

    Like I get it the kovler lion house was outdated but that being said there was still room for alterations for each exhibit and still keep the extensive collection the y had imo and figuring out ways to have rotating outdoor enclosures for all the species wouldn't of been so bad and same went for the old lester e Fisher great ape house outdated yes but the amount the room each had was extensive if they took the concept with the old and the new I think it would of done good but I guess I like the nostalgia factor

    My biggest problem with this exhibit is the lack of any real coherent theming. I think I’d move the snow leopard, Canada lynx, and red panda to other parts of the zoo, and replace them with say, severals, caracals, and fossas. That way, there could be an African theme.
