Installing Piping to Drip Pan on Water Heater is not as hard as it seems - just need an exterior wall close to the tank and after installing the drip pan we show how its done in this video.
Just moved into an older house and the inspector called out this drain piping was missing from the drip pan. I'm going to install it in the near future so thank you SO MUCH for the easy-to-follow video. Excellent!
I just saw these in the store for the first time. I can’t believe everyone doesn’t have one. They are so cheap and would prevent many problems I’ll be using them for sure
I don't seem to have that issue but if you want you can install an elbow but that will eventually evaporate the water. I suggest a screen, just zip lock it around the end of the pipe outside... Hope that helps.
That's a great idea, certainly could have used that on my last homes, both water heaters burst, this would have saved a lot of clean up. Great to know about this. Thanks John.
I’m glad you mentioned that the rubber washer needed to be on the outside of the pan because it was on the inside already so that made it look like it was supposed to be like that. 😊
Great install of the drain piping for the water heater pan! Also a pipe could be installed onto the pressure relief valve on top of the tank and elbowed down the side into the pan, this will prevent water spraying the wall should the relief valve ever release some pressure. Have a great Easter weekend! 👍
We did something like thid, but added a "T" fitting along the run into the wall, and ran a flexible hose from the T to the emergency pressure valve - so that way if it trips, it will drain out, rather than down where the pan is. Also, watch the mythbusters video where they increased the temp. On a hot water tank until it ruptured - y clogging the relief valve. Very interesting results!
Great Video ....thanks! I live in the Dallas.TX area and my water heater is located in my attic and is 10 years old. I have been told you are NOT suppose to use PVC for the water heater drain pan , instead I have to use CPVC, is that right? Mine has a square metal pan with a metal fitting and the CPVC has been glued or threded into the pan's metal drain fitting. since the pan is rusted, I have to replace the pan AND the CPVC piping and new thred connection.....Just a bit nervous, since I'm newbie to all this!
Questions: a) any provisions to keep critters from crawling in through that pipe? b) the hole in the tile seems bigger, than necessary -- obvious gap around the pipe; c) do you really need to cement the connections, considering how low the water-pressure is ever going to be?
a) I don't seem to have that issue but if you want you can install an elbow but that will eventually evaporate the water. I suggest a screen, just zip lock it around the end of the pipe outside... b) If the hole is too big caulk it... c) Its your choice... Hope that helps.
Great video but. How do you keep bugs from crawling into the house through the open pipe through the wall ? How hard was it to get all the primer off the porous floor ? Why reduce to 1/2 " when the pan came with 1" ? Why is there water in the pan ? Just wondering.
How do you keep bugs out?: I got no bugs in there yet but if you worried just add an elbow to the outside of the pipe. But its a waste of time because the elbow has to be full of water at all times to be effective.... I'm sure you get the idea.... How hard was it to get all the primer off the porous floor? The floor was wet from the draining the old tank nothing stained the floor.... Why reduce to 1/2 " when the pan came with 1" ? The pan comes with the reducer.. Why is there water in the pan ? There's water in the pan when we were draining the old tank not with the new tank...
Remember the mesh cover on the outside sticking pv pipe to prevent bugs from crawling in. Spiders - wood roaches centipedes all make their way in. A little screening and a zip tye will do.
I didn't see him seal that big gap in the pipe hole big enough for a mouse to squeeze inside!!!! Something will definately attempt getting inside from outside! Silicone sealant!
Just curious. But is there any reason why water would be flowing IN through the drain pipe? I just had my water heater replaced, thinking that it was leaking (and it was over 10 years old). And when we replaced it, I noticed that Drain pipe. There's no plug to it. But how, why would water be coming in through that?
I'm in a condo and my hot water heater is in an outside closet. The drain pipe goes from the drip pan to the door of the outside closet and drains under the door to the patio where there's a drain. The plumber is telling me he has to run a new one through the building wall to outside. This doesn't seem right to me. Anybody know?

definitely a must. Thanks for the feedback.
So what stops the bugs from crawling from the outside to the inside through the pipe

It's definitely great insurance having them under water heaters. They should come with every tank. Take care Dennis.

Same. That was the reason I watched this video. Simple issue that I couldn't find an answer to through Google!
Great way to show us how to do it, thanks John!
You bet!
By following you I get useful information. Thanks dude.
Glad to hear it! Thank you
It's nice that you know how to fix a lot of stuff around the house.
Thank you very much.

Just keep in mind that the hose and pvc are not meant for hi pressure HOT water... it will melt it. The pressure valve is usually copper piping....
Tha k you so much for making this video. Really helped a lot.
You're very welcome! Thank you for the feedback.

If your local code requires CPVC then you should it won’t hurt to use it.

John, thanks
Thank you
Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi John, great job and video tutorial, my friend!
Have a nice Easter weekend....Elio👍😊
Thanks, Likewise Elio!
Hi, good job! Like 188.
Thank you very much

My hot water heater is getting pretty old. Now you have me wondering if I'll have the same issue when I need to replace it.
I really think they should be required by code.
Thanks for sharing.. You guys did a great job..
Thanks Allen. Have a great week.
What size masonry bit did you use?
Look in the description for the bit I used. 👍
I did, you listed the diamond bit but not the masonry.
@@CJB-mv8ge Sorry about that, I believe it was 3/4"
Another excellent video my friend! Good job! 👍 Happy Easter
Thanks! You too!

you mean the drain pipe going outside is getting water inside your pan?
Nice work, great share. ❤
Thanks for your wonderful work.
Many thanks.
Heavy work if you have a 30 gallon 👍68 Gary
I agree!
Looks easy to do, great tutorial.
It is!
*thanks for your precious help with my pipes*
It's my pleasure
This is awesome 👍 advice 👍
Glad it was helpful!
When did Pete Davidson start doing home improvement videos
too funny...
What is the solution if there is no outside wall near the water heater?
have a hose ready and hope and pray your home when it starts leaking... keeping an eye on the tray if you see water in it will be a good warning...
Isn’t CPVC required here?
You can, but whatever you have at hand... not building a pressured system...
Would this work for a washer drain pan as well?
for any drain pan.
How do keep critters from crawling into the pipe then into your house
Screen can be zip tied to the end of the pipe.
As usual great tutorial well explained! 👍🙂
Thank you! Cheers!
*top tips and great list of tools and materials used on this great job*
Thank you! Cheers!

Just verify it with your City code.
Why would you reduce the size?
Reducer comes with the pan when you buy it. I guess you can choose not to use it.
good tutorial here John
*fully watching🥸Au👍thumbs up too👍*
Thanks for the visit.
I wish you and loved ones a nice Easter weekend!
